Two rather high-profile welterweight and strawweight pairings are set for the UFC’s upcoming schedule of fights in the month of October.
Firstly, a matchup between the surging Chicago wrestling staple, Bella Muhammad, and the promotional-perfect Roufusport mainstay, Sean Brady has been added to a UFC 281 pay-per-view event on October 22. from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE. ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto was first to report the news of Muhammad’s return against Brady in October.
The UFC books a high-stakes strawweight headliner to main event an October 1. event
As for the beginning of the month, a high-stakes, potential strawweight title-eliminator between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Mackenzie Dern, and the Liaoning native, Yan Xiaonan is scheduled to headline a UFC Fight Night event on October 1. to kick off the month’s proceedings for the organization.
Confirming the headlining clash on their official Twitter account, Paradigm Sports Management confirmed Dern’s return against Xiaonan on October 1.
“It’s official. Mackenzie Dern and Yan Xiaonan will meet in a strawweight main event on October 1.”
Enjoying an impressive three-fight winning run, Muhammad headlined UFC Vegas 51 back in April, earning the #5 rank in the official welterweight pile with a rematch, unanimous decision win over Vicente Luque.
In a pair of prior victories against former title challengers prior to avenging his win against Luque, Muhammad handed one-sided unanimous decision losses to both Stephen Thompson, and Demian Maia.
As for Brady, the #9 ranked Philadelphia native boasts a 15-0 professional record, most recently besting Michael Chiesa with a unanimous decision triumph at UFC Vegas 43 last time out.
Calling for an interim title fight recently at the strawweight limit, Dern returned to winning ways after a loss to Marina Rodriguez, defeating division staple, Tecia Torres with a split judging success at UFC 273 back in April.
For Xioanan, the Chinese contender is tasked with rebounding from a recent pair of losses to the aforenoted common-foe, Rodriguez, as well as a ground strikes knockout defeat to inaugural strawweight champion and current division titleholder, Carla Esparza.

Belal Muhammad has worked hard to earn his #5 ranking in the UFC’s welterweight division, but there were times on the way up where he questioned his employer’s intentions.
“Remember the Name” joined former UFC fighter-turned-comedian Brendan Schaub on a recent edition of Schaub’s Food Truck Diaries Youtube series. When they weren’t sampling Mexican food, the two discussed Muhammad’s UFC career and current run of success.
When Schaub pointed out how difficult Muhammad’s last few opponents have been, the 33-year-old admitted to feeling the UFC might be out to get him with his last fight against Vicente Luque.
“That was the fight where I was like, ‘Man, does the UFC hate me?’ Muhammad said about the matchup. “I was like, they have to have something against me. You know, you give me Maia, I beat Maia. One of the best grapplers to have ever fought in the UFC. Then you give me Wonderboy, who’s one of the best strikers to have ever fought in the UFC. Then you’re like, ‘All right well dang, he got past those two. Lemme give him somebody that knocked him out.’ Somebody that, one of the best finishers — I think — one of the best finishers in the welterweight division at all.”
The 33-year-old earned a five-round decision over Luque in their main event bout earlier this year. That fight was a rematch of their 2016 meeting, which Luque won via first-round knockout.
“Remember the Name” rebounded from that Luque loss with four-straight wins before losing a decision to Geoff Neal in 2019. He’s gone unbeaten through eight fights since then, winning every bout aside from a 2021 No Contest when Leon Edwards poked him in the eye.
With Edwards set to challenge welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Muhammad is currently waiting for a matchup with one of the division’s remaining Top 5.
What do you think of Muhammad’s comments about the UFC’s matchmaking for his last fight?
Khamzat Chimaev appears ready to get back into the Octagon and has identified potential opponents for his next two fights. Where exactly he’d be fighting remains an open question, but the undefeated welterweight took to Twitter to outline his preferred who and when for his next two bouts. “August [Nate Diaz] October [Belal Muhammed]” This…

Where exactly he’d be fighting remains an open question, but the undefeated welterweight took to Twitter to outline his preferred who and when for his next two bouts.
“August [Nate Diaz] October [Belal Muhammed]”
This tweet calling out Nate Diaz and Belal Muhammad follows previous tweets where “Borz” mentioned each fighter individually. The 28-year-old has gone back and forth with both Muhammad and Diaz following Chimaev’s win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.
Nate Diaz hasn’t fought since losing to Leon Edwards in 2021. The 37-year-old has appeared increasingly frustrated with both Chimaev and the UFC as he looks to finish his current contract with the promotion.
Muhammad is coming off a win over Vincente Luque and is seemingly a bit more comfortable waiting for Chimaev, as the 33-year-old is currently #5 in the UFC’s welterweight rankings.
If Chimaev is serious about the timing for these welterweight matchups, the UFC has three events set for August and two for October.
August currently has a scheduled Fight Night card in need of a main event, but it would also make sense to add a potential Chimaev vs. Diaz fight onto UFC 278 in Salt Lake City. That event on August 20 will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards.
UFC 281 on October 22 appears a likely candidate for a fight with Muhammad. The event will be in Abu Dhabi, where Chimaev has already contested three of his five UFC bouts.
Chimaev’s rise to UFC stardom been one of the fastest in recent memory. He joined the promotion in 2020 and quickly earned three stoppage wins in just over two months. “Borz” followed that hot start with a first-round finish of Li Jingliang in 2021 before earning a unanimous decision over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.
The 28-year-old is currently the UFC’s #3-ranked welterweight contender.
What do you think of Chimaev’s callout of both Nate Diaz and Belal Muhammad?
