Dada 5000 has opened up about the aftermath of his fight against Kimbo Slice.

Dada 5000 and Slice met in the main event of Bellator 149. Given the street fighting background of both men and their supposed rivalry with one another, many were expecting a knock-em-down, drag-em-out war between the two. The reality could not have been any further from expectations.

In what has since been crowned one of the worst fights in MMA history, both men were visibly exhausted after the first 2 minutes. The rest of the first involved either slow, one punch exchanges or one fighter simply lying on top of the other. The bout was mercifully stopped in the third round when Slice was awarded the TKO.

Immediately afterwards, Dada 5000 was loaded onto a stretcher and rushed to a nearby hospital. It was later reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest during the fight.

Now, five years after the infamous bout, Dada 5000 spoke openly about what he went through after the fight in an interview with Jimmy Smith of Fight Nation.

“When I went down, my heart stopped, you know, a heart stops for five minutes. Then they brought me back. Then it stopped again for eight. So I had no heartbeat for 13 minutes, you know, and the hospital, you know, they was literally that ready to give up on me, but I was inside of a homeless stage, but I heard everything and, you know, I just love one fight to start another fight,” Dada 5000 said (h/t MiddleEasy.)

“So at that point I was fighting for my life. You know what I’m saying? And I refuse, I refuse to lay down, you know? And, uh, I broke through, you know, thanks to God, and my will to pull through. Everything shut down and my heart was the last one to go, but I just refused to stop fighting. I swung until I had nothing left, that fight could have went anyway, because I had him on the ground on all fours in one round, I just didn’t have it in me to finish it.”

The fight would serve as the last in both men’s careers. Dada 5000 would retire from the sport afterwards, while Slice would tragically pass away after suffering a heart attack of his own at age 42.

Throughout the years, we’ve seen time and time again how hard it is for mixed martial artists to walk away from the fight game.

For 49-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) legend Royce Gracie, it appears to be even harder.

The fighting pioneer returned to action last February in the main event of Bellator 149 to score a highly controversial TKO victory over fellow ageing veteran Ken Shamrock. Gracie got the victory after a long time away from the sport, but his performance didn’t necessarily make any fight fans want to see him compete again.

According to Gracie, however, he will most definitely compete again, telling Combate that he’s ‘not retired’:

“Man, I’m trying to leave this game,” Gracie said. “I’m not retired. I’m on a break, but it’s hard to quit, because I like to fight. When you like something, it’s not work, it’s a pleasure. Everyone wants to fight me. It’s a long list. That’s good, it shows there’s demand. I’ll face whoever the promotion puts in front of me. I never picked an opponent.”

As far as potential opponents go, Gracie claims that a list of fighting legends have expressed interest in fighting him. The Brazilian specifically noted UFC veterans Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk and Dan Severn as possible options:

“I heard it’s a long list,” Gracie said. “Sean Sherk, Dan Severn, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, everyone wants to fight me. The old guys are showing up.”

Dada 5000 was stretchered out of the arena and taken to a hospital following his fight with Kimbo Slice at Bellator 149. It was revealed that Dada 5000, whose real name is Dhafir Harris, had two heart attacks as a result of the fight. 

Dada 5000 recently spoke out on the situation during a recent appearance on The Dan LeBatard Show.

“When I actually fell inside that ring, Kimbo Slice never touched me,” Harris said. “I had a heart attack. So, when I slammed against the cage, and I went down, that was just the beginning.”

“I remember bits and pieces of the second round,” Harris said. “Where I hit Kimbo, and he just dropped his hands. And I’m looking at a home-run at that point, but my body was so done, I couldn’t even follow up. Even when he was on all fours, and I was tapping him, I’m thinking, ‘yo if I would’ve had a little more power, that would’ve been over at that point.’ So I was feeling like I was anxious.”

“I was thinking to myself, ‘what is actually going on with me?’ I didn’t know at that time, medically, that my kidneys had locked up on me and that I was having a heart attack. And the last thing that I remember is that I was leaning on him, and he shifted away from me. He swung, but he missed, and I stumbled, and I went down. The next thing, I woke up hours later, and I was inside the hospital.”

Dada 5000 claims that he died as a result of the fight. Doctors kept working on him to try to bring him back to life, which is exactly what happened.

“I was dead,” Harris added. “When you talk about your spirit leaving your body, looking at the light, but it’s not your time to go, and you actually get brought back, that was my situation. Because I was pronounced dead, and they kept working, kept working, kept working. And I died minutes apart.”

“I come from a spiritual background,” Harris said. “I’m laying on the gurney, the bed. Now, they say when a person is inside of a coma, be careful of what you say because they can hear you but they cannot respond to you. The last thing that goes is your hearing. So I’m listening to the doctors say, ‘well, listen, we have to drill a hole inside of his head. We have to release the pressure on his brain. We have to put this chip or something inside so we can get the response from him that we want.’ And my brothers and them were like, ‘no, you’re not doing that.’ So they were telling me, ‘Dada, if you hear what they’re trying to do to you, move your hand. Move your right hand.’ And I couldn’t. I was stuck.”

Dada 5000 explained that he was trying to talk but just couldn’t but was able to use his hands as a sign of life, which alerted the doctors that he was alive.

“I was screaming to the top of my lungs, no, do not let them do that to me. And I’m going to tell you something, my will to live superseded anything else. I really just focused on my hands, and I moved my hands, and they were like, ‘doc, look, he’s moving his hands! Move your other hand.’ And I moved my other hand.”

“The doctors were like, ‘wow, it’s a miracle. Like, no, it’s God. You haven’t seen anything yet. And later that day, I’m laying back, and my eyes just opened up a little bit, and then I actually opened them up. They had tubes and everything running down my throat. They had originally written me off.”

Following this situation, it’s highly unlikely that Bellator MMA will book him to fight again.

Dear God, No: Is Dada 5000 Actually Considering Another MMA Fight?


(Unless he plans on actually using that sledgehammer, this is going to end poorly.)

Vince Lombardi was once famously quoted as saying that “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up” that is the true measure of a man. Then again, he also died of stupid butthole cancer because he was too proud to get a proctoscopic exam, so what the f*ck does he know?

What we’re getting at is, there comes a time in everyone’s life where throwing in the towel doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re refusing (or unable) to get up. In the combat sports world especially, we’ve seen countless fighters place ego above all else and continue fighting well beyond the point that their bodies have told them to stop, and to what end? (More often than not,  few wholly unnecessary concussions.

So if you were, say, a 38-year-old guy who nearly died from kidney failure while competing in your first MMA fight in 5 years, you’d probably hang up the 4 oz. gloves for good and thank your God for bringing you out of that coma you were in, right? Well, not if you’re Dada 5000 you wouldn’t!

Despite spending two weeks in a hospital following his near-fatal loss to Kimbo Slice at Bellator 149, it looks like Dada 5000 aka Dhafir Harris might actually be considering another fight. In a statement posted to his instagram this morning, Dada cleared up what went down on the night of Bellator 149 — which was somehow much, much worse than you think — and kinda sorta hinted that he would be returning to the cage to give this silly little sport another try.

The statement reads: “To All My fans, Supporters, Haters, And Critics Alike. I haven’t been on Social media due to situations Beyond My Control. (Not because of the outcome of the fight) Tune in to ESPN Dan Lebatard Tv and Radio Show This Wednesday @12 Noon. In my up and coming interview as I will put an end to all Accusations, Opinions Speculations, and Assumptions about the Fight. A lot of folks celebrities alike have jump to conclusions without the facts. Yes I trained very hard for this fight and I was in Fighting Shape.. But those who knew me they knew that something wasn’t right by the look in my Eyes when I stepped into that ring. But Stay tuned for the rest of that shocking story (Coming up) But tune in this Wednesday @ 12 noon on the ESPN the Dan Lebatard Tv and Radio Show! For the 1st of many interviews from DADA5OOO! Yes I did have kidney failure during the fight I also had 2 heart attacks which I did code aka Died during the Fight. Glory to the Most High which saw favor in me to bring me back. which put me in Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston Texas for more then 3 weeks after the fight. Just to come back to Miami and to continue treatment at South Miami Hospital. Thank you all for your Prayers And Support I will make a full recovery and will be back Bigger, Faster and stronger than ever before that much you can Count On!!!”

Wait, so Dada not only suffered kidney failure, but two heart attacks during the fight *and* coded? And he still wants to fight?!!

You know what, f*ck it. You’ve earned this, Mr. 5000. (*salutes*)

Probably the saddest thing about this whole idea is the fact that Bellator will DEFINITELY book him another fight. Hell, they’ve probably already started hyping up Dada vs. Kimbo II.

“One has heart-stopping power, the other can literally come back from the dead! Tune in this summer to see the sequel to the ultimate street brawl at Bellator 188: Coronary!!”

I know Bellator doesn’t typically name their events, but you get the picture.

The co-main event bout between backyard brawlers Kimbo Slice and Dada 5000 (real name Dhafir Harris) at February’s Bellator 149 is largely regarded as one of worst MMA bouts of all-time, but it certainly wasn’t humorous that Harris was sent to a hospital for an extended stay after passing out in the cage.

Harris was in Houston for almost three weeks after the controversial event recovering from cardiac arrest, a broken orbital bone, and severe dehydration, fatigue, an renal failure after a reported 4-pound weight cut to make the heavyweight limit. Now that he’s apparently back to health, he got on Instagram today to briefly describe what happened to him before quickly delting the post.

In the post, Harris wrote that he had two heart attacks and ‘died’ in the fight:

“Yes I trained very hard for this fight and I was in Fighting Shape. But those who knew me they knew that something wasn’t right by the look in my eyes when I stepped into that ring.

“Yes I did have kidney failure during the fight I also had 2 heart attacks which I did code aka Died during the Fight.”
