This evening (Saturday, January 21, 2017) will mark a rare occurence of a weekend featuring a major MMA event not staged by the UFC when returning UFC star Chael Sonnen takes on fellow former UFC great Tito Ortiz in the featured bout of Bellator 170 from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Fan favorite trash talker Sonnen will return to mixed martial arts over three years since he last lost to Rashad Evans in a beating back at UFC 167. To put it in perspective, that was also the last card legendary welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre fought at. “The Bad Guy” then ‘retired’ under the weight of a monstrous steroid scandal heading into his long-awaited bout with Wanderlei Silva.

He’ll return to face Ortiz, the former longtime UFC light heavyweight champion who has been a decorated resume but has seemingly been fading for years now. His results since signing with Bellator are mixed, as he’s put forth bouts including a disappointing submission loss to Bellator champ Liam McCgeary, a submission win over an undersized Alexander Shlemenko, and a ho-hum split decision over fellow former UFC competitor Stephan Bonnar after a strange but ultimately selling build-up.

It’s the kind of card that you love to hate and can’t look away from. in the co-main event, Paul Daley will take on Brennan Ward in an underrated bout of knockout hitters that could certainly steal the show. Find out who we picked to win at one of Bellator’s most anticipated events below:

Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz:

Mike Drahota:

I can’t deny the outright ‘train wreck’ appeal of this fight that probably lost all true relevancy many years ago. But the fight will draw its numbers on the heels of Sonnen and Ortiz’s big names, and Bellator President Scott Coker should continue his formula of using past-prime UFC names to garner viewers to Bellator MMA.

As far as the fight goes, Ortiz has at least been fighting in the past couple of years. He also appeared much bigger and in shape at the weigh-ins, while Sonnen appeared deflated and much less toned compared to his admitted steroid-abusing self. He’s also a former middleweight and looked small for even that division.

With both fighters obviously wrestlers at heart, this fight could play out mostly on the feet, which means it could be ugly. But I think Ortiz will use his size to show the effects of Sonnen’s ring rust, putting him down for a ground and pound stoppage. Ortiz by TKO, R2.

Mike Henken:

This is a difficult fight to predict for me simple because both fighters have been inactive as of late and both fighters are aging as well. Ortiz hasn’t competed since a Sep. 2015 loss to Liam McGeary and Sonnen hasn’t competed since a Nov. 2013 loss to Rashad Evans. Both men are accomplished wrestlers, so I expect this fight to hit the mat at some point. In my opinion, takedowns will be the deciding factor in this bout. I’m going to go with my gut here, and pick Sonnen to land the takedown and batter Ortiz with ground and pound for the majority of the bout. Sonnen by unanimous decision.

Paul Daley vs. Brennan Ward:

Mike Drahota:

There’s not a whole lot more to say about this fight other than it should be the slugfest everyone’s expecting it to be. Both fighters try to knock their opponents out from the bell – and they often throw caution to the wind when doing so. Thanks to his top-level kickboxing experience, Daley is one of the most powerful one-punch knockout strikers in all of MMA, and Ward has looked absolutely vicious and fierce during a recent streak where he’s finished five out of his last six foes. I’ll go out on a limb and pick the younger Ward here. Ward by R1 TKO.

Mike Henken:

The co-main event features an intriguing bout between two welterweight sluggers. Ward has won three of his last bouts and is coming off of a KO win over Saad Awad. Daley, on the other hand, is coming off of a loss, but prior to that he had won five straight with four coming by way of stoppage. I expect this to be a fire fight, and I’m going to predict that “Semtex” lands the bigger shots. Daley by second round TKO.

Chael Sonnen Was Wiling To Edit Tito Ortiz’s Trash Talk

Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz are two of the most outspoken trash talkers in the history of mixed martial arts. Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz are two of the most outspoken trash talkers in the history of mixed martial arts.

But Sonnen hasn’t been too impressed with Ortiz’s banter ahead of their Bellator 170 main event bout tonight (Jan. 21, 2017) from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

In a recent interview (transcribed by Bloody Elbow), “The American Gangster” critiqued Ortiz’s trash talk, saying that he was willing to edit and revise “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’s” lines leading up to their fight:

“He said that he ‘literally’ hoped that I soiled myself, which means he’s either really gross or he doesn’t understand what ‘literally’ means,” Sonnen said.” “My offer to him is the same as it was from back when we got started: Just run it past me first. Before you say anything, send me a text message. I’ll edit it and send it back—I’ll handle both sides of this thing for us. It’ll be great.

“He won’t be able to perform it, though. It’s not like I can just give him the words. You can hand the lyrics of “Blue Suede Shoes” to anybody, but there’s a reason Elvis was the one out there in a blue jumpsuit singing it. I mean, I can’t fix everything, but I think it’s a step in the right direction.”

Sonnen also took a shot at Ortiz’s infamous use of a juice box, which he used to take a jab at Sonnen’s history with performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs):

“I was a little surprised by the juice box thing,” Sonnen said. “I was like, ‘Tito, you brought in props which means you thought this out.’ He didn’t just freestyle that off the top of his head. This was a prepared statement. Who was your focus group? Who did you run that past and they said, ‘Yeah, do the juice box thing. Let’s do that!’?”

With the war of words now over, Sonnen will have to back up his always-brash banter with his first late 2013, compared to the oft-injured Ortiz’ relatively active resume as of late. Who are you picking to to come out on top this evening?

Karakhanyan on Fight With Sanchez: ‘We’re Going to See Who Goes Down First’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g64_gBaRMBA

Georgi Karakhanyan is going to make his 10th appearance inside the Bellator cage tonight (Jan. 21). The former World Series of Fighting (WSOF) featherweight champion will go toe-to-toe with Emmanuel Sanchez. “El Matador” is no stranger to the Bellator cage himself as he will be fighting under the promotion for the eighth time.

Tonight will mark “Insane’s” 34th professional fight. The 31-year-old told MMAWeekly.com that the experience has benefited him greatly:

“I went through a lot different phases where I was trying to figure out what works for me and what doesn’t work for me. At a certain point in your career you figure out what you’re good at and what you’re not good at, and what you need to work on.”

Karakhanyan is well aware of the dangers Sanchez presents. He said he knows what he has to do to secure the victory.

“He comes from a good camp, he comes to fight, and I think it’s going to be an exciting show for all the fans. To get the win, I’ve got to be Georgi. I’ve got to be aggressive and control the fight right away.”

In his 26 professional wins, Karakhanyan has finished his opponents 20 times. Meanwhile, Sanchez has put away six of his foes in his 13 wins. “Insane” isn’t counting on their bout to go the distance.

“The main thing is listening to my corner. Sometimes I tend to not listen and get too crazy, but I like to take chances. I think he and I like to bang, so we’re going to see who goes down first.”

Bellator 170 will be held inside The Forum in Inglewood, California. The main card begins at 9 p.m. ET on Spike. A grudge match between former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight title holder Tito Ortiz and former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen will headline the card.

MMA veterans Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen are set to do battle in the main event of this Saturday night’s (Jan. 21, 2016) Bellator 170 from The Forum in Inglewood, California, and there’s certainly no love lost between “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” and “The Bad Guy”.

The two have went back and forth in the media over the last few months, and their feud hit its boiling point at the Bellator 170 pre-fight press conference earlier this week.

After Ortiz was asked a question at the presser, he elected to tell a story about a lion and a hyena, comparing himself to a lion:

“It’s kind of funny,” Ortiz said. “I was listening to Christopher Walken, a little skit he did, and he talked about this lion, the king of the jungle, with this big giant mane, and this hot, smothering weather in Africa. And the small lions come up and poke at him, bite on his ear, bite on his neck, and the lioness comes over and bugs him. Then you’ve got the jackals and the rest of the wilderness looking and seeing these lions on the mountaintop. They come over and bother him. They eat all his food.”

Sonnen, mocking the story, started snoring into his microphone. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” wasn’t too pleased with “The American Gangster’s” actions, saying he would put Sonnen to sleep on Saturday night:

“This little hyena, I’m going to eat right through him, and we’ll see on Saturday night,” Ortiz said. “It’s good because it’s fueled me. Because you hear that snoring nose? That’s the snoring nose you’re going to hear in the second round of the fight.”

Sonnen then responded with the following:

“That’s good! That’s something,” Sonnen said. “That was good work by you. I gave you a good setup.”

It’s clear that Sonnen has gotten under the skin of Ortiz, as the ex-UFC champion has appeared to be quite angry leading up to the bout, while “The American Gangster” has been more laid back, enjoying the process ahead of his Bellator debut.
Who do you expect to come out on top when these two settle the score at The Forum?
