Ryan Bader knows the stakes are high for his light heavyweight title defense against Vadim Nemkov this Friday at Bellator 244.
Bader is dropping back down to 205-pounds for the first time since 2017 to battle the surging contender in Nemkov. It is a very intriguing matchup, and for Bader, he believes the winner is the best light heavyweight in the world.
“Arguably, right now you can say the winner of this fight is one of the best light heavyweights right now that’s out there,” Bader told MMA Junkie. “DC retired and had a great career. He was always up there. Then, obviously, Jon Jones was one of the greatest of all time. I think that the whole division was in his shadow. Him moving up definitely opens it up.
“With my accomplishments, it’s not like I haven’t been there,” he added. “I was a top-five guy consistently in there. I’ve grown as a fighter since I came over here – tremendously. Yeah, you can argue the winner of this fight is the best light heavyweight right now.”
In his career, Ryan Bader does have notable wins over Ovince Saint Preux, Ilir Latifi, Rashad Evans, and Phil Davis at light heavyweight. Yet, one person he never got the chance to fight is Daniel Cormier. They were scheduled to fight in which ‘DC’ called ‘Darth’ the easiest fight in the division.
Years later, Bader still hopes that fight can happen as he believes he is a completely different fighter.
“You look at fights you wish you woulda, shoulda, coulda,” Bader said. “That was a big fight. I was in training camp for it, and he got pulled out to fight for the title. I’d like to have that fight now where I am in my career now – how I am mentally (and) physically rather than back then. I’m a totally different fighter, a complete fighter, so now would be the time.”

John McCarthy loves how Bellator president Scott Coker handled the cancelation of Bellator 241 last Friday. On March 13, the quarter-finals of the featherweight grand prix would conclude in a very solid card. It would be under unique circumstances as there would be no fans or media in attendance. Yet, just hours before the event […]
John McCarthy loves how Bellator president Scott Coker handled the cancelation of Bellator 241 last Friday.
“Here’s a guy that made the hard decision,” McCarthy said of Coker to co-host Josh Thomson on the pair’s Weighing In podcast (via BJPENN.com). “He’s going to lose a lot of money for his company by making this decision. He goes and he makes the decision, pays the fighters all their money, pays the employees their money, and you know what? That’s what a real leader does. A really leader steps up and says ‘this is what’s important for you, your families, your health and safety.’
“He made the hard choice, he made it on his own, he did what was right,” McCarthy added, continuing his praise of Coker. “He handled it beautifully and you’ve got to commend the man for being a leader that he is.”
For John McCarthy, he says the Las Vegas-based promotion was playing a risky legal game by continuing on with events.
“I always look at things in a liability format because that’s my background and I had to work against lawyer all the time,” McCarthy said. “Someone along the way, if they get sick, they’re going to say ‘well [the UFC] made me work’. Then they’re going to pull someone like Dana in and go ‘Mr. White, did you not see the President put the country in a state of emergency?’ He’d have to say yes, I know that. Then it’s gonna be well did you know that Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, NHL Hockey, they all suspended their operations. And around the world, soccer, they suspended theirs because they were worried about people’s health?’ He’s going to have to say ‘yes’ to all of that. Which is going to lead him down a road where he’s going to lose.’”

Jiri Prochazka, who was the reigning RIZIN light heavyweight champion, signed with the UFC recently. Many were surprised about that given Bellator was talking about Ryan Bader vs. Prochazka. For the Czech fighter, he said Bellator did offer him a contract but the UFC has always been his dream. “Yes, we talked to Bellator about […]
“Yes, we talked to Bellator about the Ryan Bader fight but the UFC was always a bigger target of mine, so we signed with them instead,” revealed Prochazka to BloodyElbow. “The UFC approached me after my fight against Dollaway and the talks were completed very quickly. They made us a really good offer so we took it right away. Since I began my MMA career eight years ago, being in the UFC was always my dream.”
In RIZIN, Prochazka became a star and made massive strides in his career.
“I really enjoyed competing for Rizin, because I like the idea of the samurai and the Bushido spirit,” Prochazka explained. “They also enjoyed having me because I had good fights with lots of action. I love Japan as a country and Rizin helped prepare me for taking on the best in the world. So now is the time to win it all.
“I’ve changed so much since my first fights in Rizin and I am a totally different fighter now,” he continued. “After every fight, I grew and improved in some way. I’m still trying to be better every day, and my aim is to be the absolute best. I train with this goal in mind all of the time.”
When he will make his Octagon debut is unknown at this time. But, he says ht is adding some much-needed new blood into the UFC’s light heavyweight division.
“I think the light heavyweight division in the UFC needs new and fresh guys who can look to challenge the top five,” stated Prochazka. “At this point in my career, I don’t want to hang around and build myself up; I want to jump into the top ten right away. When I know who my opponent will be, I’ll be ready. My next goal is to win my first fight in the UFC with one of my best performances ever. I want to show the world what I am capable of.”
Who do you think Jiri Prochazka should fight in his UFC debut?

Benson Henderson believes he will finish Michael Chandler at Bellator 244 on June 6.
The two first met at Bellator 165 where Chandler edged out a split-decision to defend his lightweight strap. The two were then supposed to fight at Bellator Japan but Henderson had to pull out. Now, in the main event of Bellator 244, Henderson knows he will have a much better performance after dealing with a torn ACL last time.
“My last fight against Chandler, I fought with a torn ACL,” Henderson told MMA Junkie. “I had a torn ACL, torn MCL, two torn meniscus and I still decided to fight anyways. Probably not the best decision. So for this one, I was like ‘yeah, maybe I should be healthy.’ You’re never like one-hundred percent, you always have nicks and bruises but fighting with a torn ACL, fighting with a broken bone, probably wouldn’t have been a smart thing to do.”
Entering this fight, Scott Coker has said it is a title eliminator and Henderson knows he will be the one getting his hand raised. He also expects to finish Chandler.
“Chandler, he can get it as many times as he wants to,” Henderson said. “If he wants to fight 10 times, that’s no problem but I’m going to win nine of those 10 times. He got the first one, they gave it to him as a split decision. The next nine, I’ll be putting him away. I’ll be finishing him, looking for submissions, looking for the knockout. His chin’s not the same as it was earlier in his career.
“Earlier in his career, he was known as throwing hard, and having a good chin and this and that. Now he doesn’t throw quite as hard. Now his chin is a little more suspect and he relies on his wrestling a lot more in his later fights and I don’t think he’ll be able to rely on that against me, outwrestling me in our next fight.”
