Beneil Dariush was not taking his frustrations out on the UFC matchmakers after all.

After coming out on top against Carlos Diego Ferreira in their UFC Vegas 18 matchup last night, Dariush seemingly took aim at them for not giving him or Ferreira a top-10 opponent but instead, making them face each other.

“I’ve got to say something, this is really bothering me,” Dariush said in his post-fight interview. “Diego should have fought a top five guy. I should have fought a top five guy. We have tough win streaks. We fought everybody. We never say no to anybody.

“But instead of giving us a top five guy, Diego I still think he deserves a top 10 guy. I’d feel a little disrespected if I was Diego. I know I feel a little disrespected.”

However, Dariush was actually addressing the top-10 rather than Sean Shelby and the rest of the matchmakers as he clarified his comments later on.

“I didn’t elaborate properly,” Dariush said (via MMA Junkie). “My issue is with these guys looking at me as high risk, low reward. These top-10 guys look at me like I’m high risk, low reward and they want nothing to do with me. That’s just a little bit disappointing.

“I appreciate Sean Shelby. He’s called me every time and he’s talked to me and he’s explained his situation. I was a little off about that, so I have to say sorry to Sean. Sorry, Sean.”

However, while Dariush wants a higher-ranked opponent, he also prefers the current system where the higher-ranked fighters can decline lower-ranked fighters — despite it not benefiting him for the moment.

“I come from a totalitarian country [Iran] and I like capitalism,” Dariush added. “I like where you get to have decisions and I get to have decisions. So I’m going to go with a no on that one. I think everyone deserves to have a voice in the matter.”

With his win over Ferreira, Dariush should enter the top 10 of the UFC lightweight rankings next week.

Beneil Dariush stretched his winning run to six last night. The UFC lightweight contender edged past Diego Ferreira in a highly entertaining fight which earned both men an extra $50,000.

In his post-fight speech, Darisuh made a point of criticizing the UFC matchmakers who he believes treated him and his opponent unfairly by putting them together once again. Dariush already holds a unanimous decision win over Ferreira from 2014.

“I’ve got to say something, this is really bothering me,” Dariush said to Daniel Cormier.

Dariush went on to talk about the fight itself, which while comeptive was clearly a win for the Iranian-American. However, the judges saw it differently with one even scoring the fight in favour of Ferreira. Luckily that card didn’t matter as the two other judges scored the fight 29-28 to Dariush who got a very deserved win.

“I was a little surprised it was a split decision,” Dariush said. “He was the toughest guy I fought so far. I hurt him in the first round and I was trying to suffocate him in the second round. He did not care. He just kept attacking.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Dariush will likely crack the lightweight top 10 this coming week. It appears huge fights lay ahead for the UFC fan favourite, as only big names are now ahead of him in MMA’s most stacked and lucrative division.

Lightweight contender Beneil Dariush was recently brought to tears after receiving the UFC comeback of the year award for 2020 for his win over Drakkar Klose at UFC 248.

The second-round knockout finish came in an exciting way as it was enough to earn Dariush the comeback of the year fore the UFC.

“Comeback of the year for 2020…” Dariush read. “So… I’m gonna need a second. For this fight… We thought we were pregnant, and I hurt my knee. I had a torn MCL. It was two weeks before the fight. Everybody was telling me, ‘Hey, just think about it, be smart. Maybe it’s not meant to be this time.’ And all I could think about was my baby. That’s why this came the way it did.

“The game plan for the fight was takedown, control, and just go like that. But somewhere along the way, I had to change gameplans when I started getting hit and got hurt. I think the thing that carried me through was knowing I could provide for my baby so I’m gonna think of that every time I see this.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

While Dariush sits at an impressive 19-4-1 and is one of the best grapplers in the sport, he has certainly showed he can mix it up with some of the best strikers as well, showing his skills in the win over Klose and a massive victory over James Vick.

Dariush will ride a five-fight unbeaten streak heading into UFC Vegas 18 this Saturday for his rematch with Carlos Diego Ferreira. Of those five wins, Dariush has three of which earned him Performance of the Night bonuses. It will be great to see the very impressive Dariush this weekend as he looks to put his stamp on the Lightweight division.
