Bibiano Fernandes has parted ways with ONE Championship.

After more than a decade with the Singapore-based promotion, ‘The Flash’ is moving on, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest bantamweights in ONE history. Listed as an 11-time ONE world champion, Fernandes shared the Circle with some of the biggest names in the division, including Kevin Belingon, Reece McLaren, and Martin Nguyen.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Fernandes revealed that his contract with ONE was set to expire in December 2023 and he was notified that the promotion would not offer him a new deal.

“I wasn’t mad at them,” Fernandes said. “Do I think they could have offered me more fights? One-hundred percent. I was out for three years basically and they could have offered me more fights. Was I a bit upset? I was, but that’s life. Many people in the world work hard, give their lives for the company they work for, and in the end [the company] owners say ‘Thank you for your work,’ and that’s it. I was sad, but what can I do? Life goes on.”

After making a name for himself under the DREAM banner, Fernandes signed with ONE Championship in 2012. A year later, he claimed the promotion’s bantamweight world championship and successfully defended it eight times throughout two separate reigns.

He surrendered the strap for the second and final time to John Lineker in March 2022. He lost a second straight bout against Stephen Loman at ONE on Prime Video 4 in November that same year.

Bibiano Fernandes was offered a fight at ONE 165 in January

Fernandes said he was offered a fight with Japanese MMA icon Shinya Aoki at the promotion’s event in Japan next year, but the organization recently announced that Aoki would be taking on ‘Super’ Sage Northcutt instead.

“Only I know what I went through,” Fernandes said. “My run at ONE, I think no one will replicate what I’ve done there. No one will defend the title as many times. I’ve worked for them for 11 years. So many difficulties there, but there’s a point in life I was like, ‘No, wait a minute.’ There are many things I don’t agree with, but still had to go through. I’m a mixed martial arts fighter but they’re doing business. They only think about business, you know? What can I do?”

Unfortunately, Fernandes was unable to go into details regarding ONE Championship’s business practices and negotiation tactics because “there are clauses in my contract saying I can’t speak or they can come after me.” However, he did offer some advice to fighters, saying:

“Many athletes go through difficulties. If you’re a fighter and you’re thinking about fighting for ONE Championship, brother, think twice before you decide to go there. You have to be very careful. Athletes have to think before — you want to fight there? Go, brother, but there’s a moment in life where you have to make decisions about whether or not this is what you really want.”

ONE Championship walks back a desk job offer made in 2017

Bibiano Fernandes inked a new deal with ONE Championship in February 2017, a few months removed from a split decision victory over Reece McLaren to defend his bantamweight title. According to the Brazilian, the contract included a job for him to work behind the scenes once he hung up his four-ounce gloves for good. According to Fernandes, the promotion rescinded that offer.

“There are things I wanted [to say] but I can’t say much because they might come at me,” Fernandes said. “I was supposed to be an ambassador for the promotion, but that didn’t happen. And thinking about it now, it’s for the best. I believe a lot in energy. If the energy isn’t there, I don’t need to force anything. If they don’t see what I’ve done for the organization, there’s nothing I can do.”

“When I received the letter, I wasn’t mad,” he added. “I felt free, you know? I felt like part of my soul came back to me. … I can’t be with a person, I can’t be in a place where they don’t see things the way I see it. You have your peak in the sport, and they’re smart during that peak. They held me back a lot. I could be fighting. There are things you have to be chill and just accept, let my history speak for me.”

Fernandes, 43, is 24-6 in his mixed martial arts career. He had won 10 straight fights inside the Circle before a split decision loss to Kevin Belingon at ONE: Heart of the Lion in 2018. He regained the title four months later in a rematch.

John Lineker (35-9) dethroned bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes (24-5) in the co-main event of “ONE Championship: Lights Out” on Friday at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Lineker has had an up and down career arch and has put a stamp on an impressive resume by winning the bantamweight title in Singapore today.

In the first round, Fernandes was able to drop Lineker on the counter with a left hook but once they hit the ground, Lineker reversed position and rode out the rest of the round in top position while landing some solid ground-and-pound.

Round 2 started with Lineker ripping the body, but Fernandes landed a great takedown. Lineker then made his way back up and eventually found a perfect left hook, which knocked out Fernandes and earned Lineker the belt.

In what has been a crazy career up to this point for Lineker, this belt might be one of his defining moments.

He was awarded a $50,000 bonus for his highlight reel KO.

Bibiano Fernandes Talks John Lineker And Possible Featherweight Run

ONE Championship bantamweight titleholder Bibiano Fernandes is ready for a new challenge.

Fernandes, fresh off a year-long rivalry with Team Lakay’s Kevin Belingon, knows who he would like to face next, but it’s a name that unfortunately for fans is not likely to appear opposite “The Flash” anytime soon.

“For me, if you ask ‘Bibiano, what kind of guy do you want to fight today?’ I would say [Henry] Cejudo. Because he is the champion and it would be a good fight,” Fernandes said in an interview with Sherdog’s Jason Burgos.

“That would be a challenge for me; that would motivate me okay, he’s the best in the UFC.”

At 40-years-old Fernandes has racked up an impressive 23-4 record, and while he is aware he is unlikely to cross paths with Cejudo, there is another UFC veteran, in John Lineker, whom he could be trading leather with soon.

Lineker announced his arrival at ONE last October with a unanimous decision victory over Muin Gafurov. The hard-hitting Brazilian has yet to impact the ONE rankings system, but if he were to get a couple of wins under his belt, then ” Hands of Stone” could soon be knocking on the door for a title shot.

It is an exciting fan-friendly matchup, and one Fernandes is happy to entertain.

” John Lineker can be a good fight, but the thing is I don’t say ‘I want this guy, I want that guy’ because really it’s ONE Championship’s decision. At the end of the day, they have to make that decision, and I have to sit with my manager, and I sit with my coach and say yes or no.” Fernandes said.

“For Lineker, if he wants to fight me, yes, it would be a good fight to fight that guy. He has a good name. He has fought in the UFC, and it would be a very good challenge for me too.”

The ONE veteran is also open to the idea of moving to featherweight but is not in any rush to chase champ-champ status just yet.

“I have to play the game very smart here; its a game, don’t forget. MMA is a game you have to understand the way you want to play. When you know the way you want to play, it’s easy, but when you don’t know, it can get very difficult,” he exclaimed.

” I have an interest in fighting at featherweight and see how I will do there, but not now, let’s see what happens in the future.”

Fernandes estimates he has another two or three years left before he rides off into the MMA sunset, giving fans just enough time to see him take on the latest crop of bantamweight contenders before making a run at featherweight.

Reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon is putting all his efforts in preparation for his first title defense against Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes. The highly-anticipated matchup is one of three co-main events to be held at ONE: A NEW ERA, which takes place at the Ry?goku Kokugikan on 31 March.

Earlier this year, Belingon’s Team Lakay stablemates Joshua Pacio and Geje Eustaquio lost their World Titles via razor-thin split decisions. Although Belingon is confident of victory ahead of his bout against Fernandes, “The Silencer” understands that losing is also part of the game.

“This is a competitive sport,” Belingon said.

“Winning and losing are both parts of the game. I personally do not feel the need to avenge Joshua [Pacio] or Geje [Eustaquio]. They did their best inside the cage and poured their hearts out into their performances. That’s all you could really ask for. I’m confident they’ll be back in prime position to regain their titles. We are extremely proud of them, win or lose.”

Belingon is deep in preparations for perhaps the most significant test in his career thus far. He is hard at work sharpening his skills and plugging any holes in his game that Fernandes can take advantage of.

With an entire nation behind him, and the support of his Team Lakay brothers, friends and family, Belingon is laser-focused on achieving his goal.

“Right now, I’m just focused on successfully defending my ONE Bantamweight World Title,” Belingon said.

“This bout is dedicated to my family, Team Lakay, and the entire nation of the Philippines. Without a doubt, this is my toughest test yet and I need to pass with flying colors.”

Belingon and Fernandes have met twice before, and both have a win each in their series. The winner of this highly-anticipated rubber match will crown the rightful owner of the ONE Bantamweight World Title.

The 31-year-old feels that he knows exactly what Fernandes brings to the table and will be ready for anything the Brazilian dishes out at him.

“Bibiano [Fernandes] is a very dangerous opponent,” Belingon concluded.

“But I feel like, after two fights, I know him very well already and I can better deal with his strengths in this third bout.”
