Middleweight champion Michael Bisping (30-7) has traded barbs back-and-forth with contender Yoel Romero ever since the Englishman won the title from Luke Rockhold back at last year’s UFC 199.

Romero ramped up his verbal assault on the champion after leveling former champ Chris Weidman with a flying knee at UFC 205, but his efforts to lobby for a title shot have fallen on deaf ears as the UFC booked Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre for GSP’s comeback fight.

The middleweight champion dismissed the idea of defending his belt against the Cuban Olympic wrestler, suggesting that he take on another former champ in Luke Rockhold to determine who will fight Bisping next, but not before ruthlessly lampooning Romero in a hilarious impersonation on UFC Tonight:

Bisping kept his usual trash talk by saying he doesn’t care what ‘The Soldier of God’ likes and suggesting the high-profile fight:

“I don’t care what Yoel likes. He’s a loser,” Bisping said on Wednesday’s episode of UFC Tonight. “We know that.”

“They can fight each other. Luke versus Yoel. Do it,” Bisping said.

Meanwhile, “The Count” is set to defend his middleweight belt against former welterweight kingpin Georges Saint Pierre, with a tentative date set for July 8, according to Bisping himself.

Bisping most recently defeated longtime foe Dan Henderson by decision at UFC 204 in October. GSP will enter the bout with the champ coming off of a nearly four-year layoff, and will be competing for the first time at 185 pounds in his UFC and MMA career.

Romero has certainly made his case for a title shot, having won all eight of his Octagon appearances and amassing an impressive 13-1 record overall. Bisping was in the crowd when Romero brutally knocked out Weidman in the third round. The Cuban powerhouse immediately called the champ out following the victory.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Romero will wait for his shot at the middleweight title or if he will take another fight while Bisping vs. GSP plays out later this year.

After defeating Chris Weidman at UFC 205, Yoel Romero sealed his position as the top middleweight contender. Calling out the champion Michael Bisping, ‘Soldier of God’ started a smear campaign of his rival. When simply claiming ‘The Count’ was ducking him didn’t get maximum effect, Romero went that extra mile. The knockout artist from Cuba created a GoFundMe page for Bisping’s ‘retirement and medical expenses.’ Although its only accumulated $200 so far, the rather hilarious point was made.

Shortly after, Romero would phone in to Bisping’s radio show and hurl random insults during an amusing tirade. Without even being booked to fight yet, ‘The Count’ and ‘SoG’ have an already great rivalry. Initially it was thought Bisping vs. Romero would go down in May, but ‘The Count’ confirms he hasn’t been offered the fight yet.

Bisping’s Response

Outside the obligatory steroid accusations and ‘poopy pants’ trolls, Bisping has responded. Speaking to Ariel Helwani during ‘The MMA Hour’ last night, the champ says Romero’s GoFundMe troll was amusing, but also distasteful:

“I’ll give it to him, that was a decent stab. I think there’s 200 dollars in there, make no mistake I’ll use that, the day will come. After I whoop his ass I’ll go get a nice massage with that $200, so thank you Yoel. On a more serious note, GoFundMe pages do fantastic work for those who really need help. I’m currently using it to raise money for a young boy fighting cancer for the fourth time. Thankfully for ‘Leo the lion’ we raised the money. It was poor taste, he’s trying to get people talking. He’s a little fly buzzing around my head, and he will get swatted. He’s explosive, a good wrestler, but Chris Weidman pretty much head butted Romero’s knee. If he didn’t keep doing that, Chris probably would’ve won that fight.”

“Go Roll Me a Cigar, Bitch”

“I don’t spend time sitting around thinking about Romero. He hasn’t got wit, he hasn’t got humor. The guy’s a knucklehead. When he called in, and I tried to have a discussion, and all he could do was scream and shout. Nothing was accomplished. He’s got rocks for brains. People get pissed off about this and that, but I can’t fight everybody on one night. Now I get a little say in the matter, people get all pissed off, I paid my dues in this sport. I’ve fought everybody, I fought guys we all knew were on steroids and went out on my shield. This is the benefit of being world champion, so kiss my ass. That’s why I told Yoel ‘until I decide to fight you, you’re my little bitch, so go roll me a cigar.’”

Yoel Romero: Even Bisping’s Wife & Kids Know He’s Avoiding Me

Since knocking out Chris Weidman at UFC 205, Yoel Romero has been tabbed for the next title fight. In typically explosive fashion, Romero put ‘The All-American’ away with a thunderous flying knee. Then came the inevitable call-out of ‘The Count,’ who just so happened to be in attendance and flipped Romero off. That was three months ago, and still no official announcement of Romero’s title fight. Having undergone surgery, Bisping’s recovery has likely been the biggest delay of them all, but not according to ‘Soldier of God.’

Appearing on The MMA Hour last night, Romero claims even Bisping’s wife and kids know the champ is avoiding him. The former Olympian also says he believes UFC 211 on May 13 will be the date of the title fight. Recently, Stipe Miocic vs. Junior dos Santos 2 was confirmed for UFC 211.

Romero Has Faith

Although he says Bisping is avoiding him, Romero also has faith in the words of his employers. Here’s what ‘SoG’ told Ariel Helwani through his translator:

“Everybody in the whole world, even his wife and kids know (Bisping) is avoiding me. (I believe) we will fight on May 13 in Dallas. This is what my employers have told me. Right now, who is the best fighter at 185 pounds? Its Yoel Romero. If someone has a belt, man, they need to defend it. Who has the belt right now? Michael Bisping, and I’m going to take it from him.”

“I sleep like a lion full of confidence. God is my strength, I sleep very easy. The only ace up his sleeve is that USADA stuff, so that’s all he can talk about. Have you seen the video where I KO Chris? Then they put a caption on Bisping’s face? Its not fear, its terror on his face. At that moment, he did not want to be the 185-pound champion in the UFC. He thought ‘what the heck am I doing here? Look what’s coming my way now, why did I talk so much crap about this man?’ He talked a bunch of sh*t about me, and vengeance is coming your way. God will bring his vengeance, that’s what he told the people of Israel.”

I Think About Him Everyday

“I don’t really put too much importance on anything he says, but I do think about him everyday. Not worrying, but I think about him everyday. He doubts himself, he knows deep down, that it’s over. He talked way too much crap, junk about me, without even knowing. It was a supplement that came out tainted. He has no idea how hard I train, how much I suffer to train like I do. This man has to pay.”

Looks like this is a very personal fight for Romero. Will it be the explosive power of ‘Soldier of God,’ or the relentless pace of ‘The Count’ that wins the day?

Will Yoel Romero Take Michael Bisping’s Belt?

Strange times have been experienced at middleweight recently. Right about the time that Chris Weidman defeated Anderson Silva, things started down a new path, leading us to a highly unexpected 2016 in the 185-pound division. As ‘The All-American’ planted that left hook on Silva way back in 2013, we knew for sure anything was possible.

Who would have predicted, though, that three years later Michael Bisping would hold the title.

Taking nothing away from ‘The Count,’ but prior to his title win, the British slugger had fallen at the final hurdle before the title shot. Crushing losses to Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort saw the long-serving Brit come up short, but his fortunes really changed in 2015. Victories over CB Dollaway, Thales Leites and Anderson Silva led Bisping to a UFC 199 rematch with Luke Rockhold. His KO victory was equal parts entertaining and unexpected.

Unexpected Rematch

Although ageing veteran Dan Henderson was miles outside the title picture, he was paired with Michael Bisping in an unlikely rematch at UFC 204. ‘The Count’ would win the battle of attrition after five rounds, but the strange occurrences at middleweight weren’t over yet. Bisping went on record as saying he would not fight Yoel Romero if he beat Chris Weidman at UFC 205. Referencing Romero’s USADA pop, ‘The Count’ caught more backlash from ‘Soldier of God’ on social media.

With the rivalry building, Romero left no questions in New York. Typically explosive, the Cuban blasted the former champion, and today Bisping had a change of heart. Claiming he’d agreed to fight Yoel Romero at a yet-to-be determined event next spring, Michael Bisping was strangely complimentary of his next opponent. This leads us nicely to the topic of who will win this 185-pound title tilt.

Sprint vs. Marathon

Looking at the first round of both men’s recent fights, it’s clear to see how they implement their striking game. Romero, against Weidman at UFC 205, threw just 40 strikes over the course of ten minutes & 24 seconds of action. although ‘Soldier of God’ only needed that one knee to finish the fight, he landed a total of 18 strikes at an accuracy of 66%. Bisping’s last fight, against ‘Hendo,’ saw the champ throw 335 strikes over five rounds, landing 119 at an accuracy of 35%.

Bisping’s stand up has improved massively, and his power is consistently overlooked, but he is outmatched in terms of KO ability against Romero. Obviously this isn’t the ‘be all & end all’ of this fight, but a big factor nonetheless. If the past year at middleweight has taught us anything, though, it’s that anything’s possible with the current crop of 185-pounders.

Anderson, Chris, Luke, Michael

If you thought the title championship timeline would go like this, well then you shoulda put money on it. The odds of the belt going through the hands of Anderson Silva to Chris Weidman were long enough, but for Michael Bisping to finally reach UFC gold was just insane. The brash Brit hit everyone for a six when he cold-cocked ‘Rocky,’ so what’s to say he can’t do the same against Romero?

The biggest difference aside from physicality is wrestling. If Romero is getting lit up by Bisping, which is possible, he has the wrestling base to control even the elite of the division. Interesting times at middleweight, and surely a few more spots up the pound-for-pound rankings if Bisping wins.

You got USADA’d! ‘The Count’ blasts Yoel Romero and Lyoto Machida, and also reveals his title shot hopes after UFC 199…

UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping has hovered around the top of the 185-pound division for years now. The brash British banger has fought the truly elite of the division, including five former or future UFC or Pride FC champions during his 10-year tenure for the promotion, but has never quite been able to break in to the much coveted title fight. In terms of fighting fighters with chequered pasts in relation to performance enhancing drugs, Bisping has been there and got the t-shirt too.

Wanderlei Silva (alleged, fled a NSAC drug test), Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva, Chris Leben and Cung Le (later cleared) are all fighters with failed steroid tests (aside from the otherwise stated) that have fought Bisping over the years. When talking about his losses to Belfort and Sonnen, these were truly costly in his chances of a title fight at the time, making his run of victories in the UFC recently all the more impressive.

BispingTraining

For the first time in five years, Bisping has strung together consecutive wins, racking up three straight including the biggest victory of his entire career. Facing former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a thrilling February encounter, ‘The Count’ claimed the former pound-for-pound king’s scalp with the unanimous decision in London. Since then, with wins over Thales Leites and CB Dolloway in mind too, the talk has once again turned to the championship picture for Bisping.

With USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) now keeping a close eye on the state of play in MMA and the UFC, we are seeing fighters finally breaking through in multiple divisions. Is this just a case of co-incidence? Perhaps, or maybe with less enhancements for certain fighters in training we are just seeing the true cream starting to rise to the top.

Which brings us to the subject of Yoel Romero and Lyoto Machida…
