The Ultimate Fighter 9 winner Ross Pearson says when he told Fighters Only magazine that he feels he’s a “far better striker” than BJ Penn, he wasn’t trying to run his mouth for the free press nor was he necessarily saying he was better than the UFC lightweight great.

“I wasn’t calling BJ Penn out,” Pearson said during a studio appearance on Monday’s The MMA Hour. “I don’t think I deserve a shot with BJ. I don’t think I’m ready for a shot at BJ Penn. I wasn’t trying to get publicity or anything like that. I think I’m a fighter at the end of the day and if I was going to fight someone, I look a the fight where I think I would win the fight. And I feel when my times comes I will be able to prove that I am the best striker in the lightweight division.”

The midway point of the year brings with it hot dog-eating competitions, all-star games, heat strokes and fireworks. And some of those fireworks come inside the cage.

It also brings an opportunity to look back on the first half of the year that has been in mixed martial arts.

All week, MMA Fighting will hand out its awards for the half-year’s best knockouts, submissions, fights, fighters, fight cards and a Sunday special from Ben Fowlkes you won’t want to miss.

But Monday, we kick things off with the top upsets through the first half of 2010. And wouldn’t you know it? Ray Hui and Matt Erickson had to duke it out over the biggest upset – and they fought … to a draw.

Paul Daley Either Is or Isn’t Signing with Bellator

(“Of course I wore me sunglasses to the press conference. I didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of all these people, now did I?”)

As part of an on-going effort to be all things to all people, the omnipresent BJPenn.com published a report this week citing “undisclosed sources” saying British firebrand/sucker-puncher Paul Daley had inked a deal with Bellator Fighting Championships. In response to this report, please allow CagePotato.com to extend its sweaty, frail hand in friendship to BJPenn.com and say: Welcome to the wild world of journalism, pal, where the pay is terrible, the food is worse, nearly everybody hates your guts and the entire world sits poised over its keyboards, waiting for the slightest provocation to tell you you’re totally full of shit, even when you’re not.

Case in point: Bellator says it hasn’t signed Daley. At least not yet. Contract negotiations are apparently top secret over at the BFC – almost as secret as where to actually find the company’s programming on your TV dial – so an unnamed source (assumedly different from Penn’s “undisclosed” one) was only willing to issue the briefest of contradictory statements to MMAFighting.com on Saturday.

Continuing his tradition of hosting a variety of top-tier fighters to help him prepare for his upcoming fights, BJ Penn has brought in a secret weapon to bolster his training camp for his August 28 rematch with Frankie Edgar: DREAM featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes.

Although he fights a weight class below Penn, Fernandes is the perfect fighter to mimic Edgar and is very similar in stature and style to "The Answer," with the only real difference being Bibiano’s superior jiu-jitsu base. 8-2 with losses to Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto and Urijah Faber, "The Flash" has not lost since 2007. His most recent win came in his first title defense via split decision over Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen at DREAM 13 in March.
