UFC fans will not get the opportunity to watch BJ Penn square off against Cole Miller at UFC 199 in Los Angeles on June 4.

According to a statement on the UFC’s official website, Penn was suspended because of a “potential Anti-Doping Policy violation.”

Here is the extended statement the UFC released Monday:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed BJ Penn of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation. Penn disclosed the usage of a prohibited method – the use of an IV in excess of 50 ML in a six-hour period – during a March 25, 2016, out-of-competition sample collection. In accordance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, Penn has received a provisional suspension, and has been removed from his scheduled bout against Cole Miller on June 4 in Los Angeles.

The UFC also noted it is attempting to find a replacement fighter to go against Miller at UFC 199.

Shaun Al-Shatti of MMAFighting.com explained that using IVs over 50 milliliters in a six-hour period is not allowed by World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines, unless the IV is received at a hospital, during surgery or as part of a clinical investigation.

Penn’s return was one of the primary storylines for UFC 199. The 37-year-old veteran sports a 16-10-2 record in his career and won the UFC lightweight and welterweight titles during his impressive tenure, but he retired after losing to Frankie Edgar in July 2014. Edgar registered a technical knockout against Penn in the fight.

Al-Shatti called Penn a “legend” and noted the UFC Hall of Famer initially announced his plans to return in February. However, that triumphant return will be put on hold following Monday’s news.

UFC 199 will still have two headliner title fights even though Penn’s return to the Octagon will no longer be part of the spectacle. Luke Rockhold will attempt to defend the middleweight championship against challenger Michael Bisping, while bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will face Urijah Faber.

BJ Penn Brings In Louis Giordano For Weight Management Ahead Of Return

bj-penn-4

Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn is returning to the Octagon once more, taking on Cole Miller next month at UFC 199.

As he prepares to compete at featherweight for the second time in his career – and first since 2014 – “The Prodigy” has hired weight management specialist Louis Giordano to help him out.

Giordano has been working with the likes of interim UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Andrei Arlovski, Johny Hendricks and Aljamain Sterling.

Penn hired Mike Dolce ahead of his last return, which was a loss to Frankie Edgar at featherweight.

Below is the complete press release:

Former UFC Lightweight & Welterweight Champion BJ Penn has hired weight management specialist Louis “Loutrition” Giordano to prepare him for his return to the Octagon against Cole Miller on June 4 at UFC 199. Penn will be fighting for the first time since July 6, 2014 and for just the second time as a featherweight.

“I am extremely excited to be working with Louis as I have witnessed firsthand how well Loutrition works,” said Penn. “When I made the decision to train with Greg Jackson, it was to make sure I was at my best physically, mentally and emotionally. Watching Lou work with Jon Jones and Andrei Arlovski has shown me how important it is to understand what I am putting in to my body. I am looking forward to competing on June 4 and having Lou in my corner.”

Giordano has been working with many athletes and mixed martial artists, most notably, Eddie Gordon, UFC bantamweight Aljamain Sterling, former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks, former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski and UFC interim light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. His belief is not in cutting weight, but managing it. He is against drastic weight cuts as well as re-hydrating via IV. With determination, hard work and will power, Giordano has helped change the lives of many. After witnessing fighters struggle to cut weight, he decided he needed to help them avoid suffering any long-term health issues.

“I have been a lifelong fan of BJ Penn. I remember watching him and knowing I was witnessing a guy who was changing the sport,” Giordano stated. “When I arrived in New Mexico to work with Jon Jones and realized that BJ was here, I was extremely excited about meeting him. When we spoke about the possibility of working together, I thought back to the time when I watched him compete. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work with a legend.”

Legendary former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J “The Prodigy” Penn is scheduled to make his highly-anticipated return at June 4’s UFC 199 from Inglewood, California after a near two-year hiatus away from the sport.

Penn was originally scheduled to face off with German kickboxer Dennis Siver, but news broke last night (May 10, 2016) indicating that Siver had suffered an undisclosed injury and would be forced out of the bout.

Fast forward less than 24 hours later, however, and the UFC has found a new opponent to replace Siver and keep Penn on the card.

According to UFC Tonight’s Megan Olivi, Cole Miller will step up on short notice to clash with “The Prodigy” in just a few weeks.

Miller is riding a rough streak as of late, coming up winless in his last two bouts. He suffered a decision loss to red hot rising contender Max Holloway in February 2015, and fought to a no-contest after being eye-poked in a bout with Jim Alers last December.

He will look to add a huge name to his resume when he faces off with Penn.

The former two-division champion hasn’t competed since July 2014, and he too had hit a rocky time near the end of his running, losing three-straight bouts, and being winless since 2010.

Now training with highly-touted coach Greg Jackson, however, Penn will look to make a splash when he enters the cage on June 4 in the L.A Forum.

Just a day after Dennis Siver bowed out of a planned UFC 199 meeting with BJ Penn, the former UFC champion has a new opponent.

Cole Miller will replace Siver and meet Penn next month from The Forum in California.

The fight announcement was made official on “UFC Tonight” Wednesday.

Miller (21-9) is coming off a December no-contest with Jim Alers and is winless since a 2014 victory over Sam Sicilia. He is 4-4 with the no-contest over his last nine fights.

Penn (16-10-2) announced plans to return earlier this year and is searching for his first victory since a 2010 knockout of Matt Hughes. He is one of two former two-division UFC champions.

UFC 199 features Luke Rockhold vs. Chris Weidman for the middleweight belt and Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber for bantamweight gold.

Injury Roundup: Anderson Silva Out of UFC 198, Dennis Siver Pulled From BJ Penn Fight

UFC 198 has just taken a HUGE hit, Nation.

Following his “controversial” decision loss to Michael Bisping at Fight Night 84 in February, former middleweight champion Anderson Silva was booked in a quick turnaround match against Uriah Hall at UFC 198 this weekend. It was an odd, if intriguing matchup from a fan’s perspective, and one that presented an opportunity for two of the UFC’s flashiest strikers to secure a much-needed win.

But now, just three days out from their scheduled meeting, Anderson Silva has been forced off of UFC 198 with one of the more unusual injuries to hit the headlines this year.

Details after the jump.

But now, just three days out from their scheduled meeting, Anderson Silva has been forced off of UFC 198 with one of the more unusual injuries to hit the headlines this year.

Details after the jump.

According to Yahoo, Silva officially withdrew from the card late last night after experiencing severe abdominal pains, which upon further inspection, were revealed “to be consistent with acute cholecystitis” — an inflammation of the galbladder.

Silva was then rushed to the hospital to undergo immediate surgery, which MMAFighting’s Guilherme Cruz ?informs us was a rousing success.

Now facing a 4-6 week recovery, the question now becomes whether Silva will be healthy enough to compete on the UFC 200 card in July. In either case, it seems that UFC will not be seeking a replacement for Uriah Hall.

In somewhat lesser injury news, BJ Penn’s totally-unwanted return fight just took a big hit in the form of his opponent, Dennis Siver, who has been forced out of the bout with an undisclosed injury. With the UFC currently scrambling to find Penn an opponent, an unexpected voice has emerged from the pack in TUF 22 finalist Artem Lobov, who took to Twitter with an interesting proposition:

All things considered, this isn’t the worst fight you could book on short notice. I mean, sure, Lobov is almost a complete non-entity to most MMA fans (and is also a whopping 0-2 in his UFC career), but he’s also a guy who both places entertainment above strategy and stands next to no chance of defeating Penn on even his best day. That’s what Penn’s unretirement is all about, right? Proving that he still has enough left in the tank to compete with *any* UFC fighter, regardless of their proximity to an actual title? He was booked against Siver, after all, who the UFC has been treating like a professional fall guy ever since he tested positive for a testicle-preserving banned substance back at UFC 168. I’m just saying that the UFC should do whatever it has to to avoid another BJ Penn breakdown, and Lobov seems like their best bet.

BJPenn.com was the first to report the news that Siver has suffered an undisclosed injury and had to pull out of the scheduled fight against “The Prodigy” as a result.

As of this writing, there is no word as to whether or not Penn will remain on the card. Penn last fought in 2014, dropping a third fight to former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. He was scheduled to make his Octagon return at UFC 199 against Siver next month. We will keep you posted regarding Penn’s UFC 199 status.

UFC 199 takes place on Sarturday, June 4, 2016 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
