BJ Penn won’t be fighting again under the UFC’s banner. His recent street fight knockout going viral online was the final straw in the UFC Hall Of Famer’s career.

“He won’t fight again. That’s it. That’s a wrap,” White said. “It’s not even that this was the last straw. I didn’t love him continuing to fight anyway. But when you have the relationship that he and I have, and he’s getting me on the phone begging me for another fight, begging me for another opportunity, it’s hard for me to turn him down.

“But after what I saw on that video, B.J. needs to focus on his personal life and get himself together before he thinks about fighting again.”

White admitted that he has yet to inform Penn of the news personally. But he hopes that he takes the steps necessary to work on himself after his recent issues. He also noted that, should Penn need anything, all he has to do is pick up the phone.

“I don’t want to sit here on TV and pick B.J. Penn apart and his life,” White said. “We all know what B.J. Penn needs to do, and hopefully B.J. Penn knows what B.J. Penn needs to do. I’m not going to sit here like I’m his father, or I’m some guy who’s above him and pointing the finger at B.J., and ‘B.J. needs to do this and that.’

“What I saw on that video was sad. I love the kid, and I hope he gets his life together. Obviously, the guy calls me and I’m still putting him in fights. If B.J. needed me, all he’s got to do to is pick up the phone and ask. If he does, I’m sure he’ll call. If he doesn’t, I hope he gets his life together.”

What do you think about White pulling the plug on Penn’s career after his streetfight KO loss?

BJ Penn made headlines late last month when video emerged of yet another street fight he was involved in.

Penn was initially shown pounding on the civilian on the ground. However, later that day, new footage emerged showing Penn get knocked out cold during the fight after eating a punch. The footage drew a ton of criticism from the mixed martial arts (MMA) world. Penn had remained silent on the matter, given he has a fight against Nik Lentz coming up soon.

Now, he has broken that silence while speaking to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter. Penn explained his side of the story. The Hawaiian claims the man he fought was a friend of his, and things spiraled out of control over some sort of disagreement at a concert. Penn tried to calm the situation down initially and hug his friend, but after eating a few punches, which included him being knocked down, he was forced to defend himself.

“An acquaintance of mine, he gets mad about something. Something was said or if it was an old past thing, and then, he wants to fight about it and I’m like ‘nah, nah,’ I’ve got a lot of witnesses, everybody else can corroborate my story. I was like, ‘No, no, no, I don’t want to fight, we’re friends, everything’s cool,’ this and that.

“So he even walks outside and I’m thinking, like, ‘Oh, this is silly, I’m going to go get him, calm him down, come back inside, we’ll come enjoy the concert,’ we’ve got some other friends there. This and that, this and that. And then I walk outside to go to give the guy a hug. And then he hits me twice and I’m like, ‘No, no! Calm down!’ And I try to give him another hug and he hits me a couple more times. And then he hits me again. I mean, I wish they [TMZ] didn’t cut the video in half. So whoever put that video out cut it in half.

“I wish it had the whole thing that showed me trying to hug the guy. And then finally my adrenaline picked up because he was hitting me so much, I’m like, ‘Oh, go ahead, hit me again.’ I thought the guy would eventually say, ‘You know what? Forget it, BJ, whatever.’ Give me a hug or whatever, walk away, and then he hit me and he hit me good, knocked me down.

“And then when I got back up he tried it again and then I just have to defend myself already. So that’s what you see in the second video. But the last thing I’m trying to do is trying to look to get into a fight. I mean ask anybody who knows me. I’m not the first guy to go around and just start pushing people.

“I’m an older guy too, and I just want to enjoy my life and I’m thinking today driving around, why don’t I have two bodyguards on the sides of me at all times just making sure it’s impossible I can get into any trouble. I was thinking that all morning.

BJ Penn is tarnishing his own legacy by continuing to engage in street fights according to Chael Sonnen.

Penn went viral earlier this week after footage showed him getting in a brawl with a civilian in Hawaii. In one of the clips, he was even knocked out cold by the civilian. To make matters worse, this wasn’t the first instance of him getting into a street fight this year.

Coupled with having the longest losing streak in UFC history, many feel Penn is ruining his own legacy both as a fighter and a person. Sonnen is one of them:

“You have to have some level of respect to the commitment and determination for BJ Penn to dismantle his legacy in such a rapid way,” Sonnen said in a recent video. “You look at BJ, so accomplished, talented, likeable, handsome, memorable, well-known. And to try to undo all of that on his own. Just being out in a bar at 40 years old with children is a little bit weird.

“You’re getting knocked out by a drunk guy with no training. Is there anything that you can do with more of a resilient dedication to tarnishing your own reputation. And you’re getting this from a guy who likes BJ Penn.”

You can see Sonnen’s full reaction below:

Do you agree with Sonnen that Penn is continuing to tarnish his own legacy with incidents like this?
