Bellator featherweight champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire has big plans for the near future.

He will first challenge heated rival Michael Chandler for his lightweight title in a super fight at Bellator 221 on May 11.

A win would not only avenge his brother Patricky’s losses to Chandler, but also make him just Bellator’s second simultaneous two-division champion.

His next plan is more ambitious.

He then plans on challenging unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match contested at 160 pounds.

While winning the lightweight title is certainly an attainable goal, one must question Freire’s desire for a boxing match with Alvarez.

For one, it is virtually a certainty that any MMA fighter taking on a a top-level boxer in a boxing match will lose, as evidenced by Conor McGregor’s loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

And while McGregor is a mainstream star with a massive following, it’s fair to say that not every hardcore UFC or boxing fan would have heard of Freire, let alone the general public. Alvarez, in comparison, is arguably the biggest draw in boxing today.

DAZN may broadcast Bellator fights and have a deal with Alvarez and his promoters Golden Boy Promotions, but this just seems like too much of a pipe dream.

What do you think of Freire’s desire to face Alvarez? And do you think MMA fighters should stop calling out boxers?

The feud between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is far from over.

Alvarez added another title to his middleweight collection this past weekend (Sat. May 4, 2019). He defeated Daniel Jacobs for the IBF middleweight title of the world. In attendance for the fight was former Alvarez foe Gennady Golovkin. “GGG” was not impressed by his rival’s performance inside the ring.

In response, Alvarez said he’s glad his “fan” was in attendance to watch him fight (via Boxing Scene):

“It ‘s good that he comes to see me, it’s good that he’s my fan. I’m grateful to have won, there’s more work to do and we’re going to get even stronger,” Canelo said.

Alvarez and Golovkin first met back in September of 2017. Both men fought hard after 12 rounds, but the public consensus was that Golovkin had out-classed the Mexican star enough to earn the decision. However, fans were shocked when a Split Draw decision was read.

They rematched a year later, with a much closer fight after 12 rounds. This time, Alvarez was awarded the Majority Decision win, in another controversial ruling. It remains to be seen what’s next for Alvarez, but a rematch with Golovkin is very much in play. As for “GGG,” he will face Steve Rolls from Madison Square Garden on June 8.

It appears the online beef between UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former boxing champ Sergio Mora has spilled into other forms of media.

Cormier offered some criticism of Mora’s broadcasting of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs boxing match last weekend. Mora immediately fired back by claiming Cormier’s striking sucks with a jab about his Jon Jones losses.

Mora claims he’s not mad about the exchange, but he’s not exactly letting it go, either. Appearing on SiriusXM’s “At the Fights” with hosts Randy Gordon and Gerry Cooney Monday (via MMA Junkie), Mora called Cormier’s criticism ‘unprofessional.’ He also said if ‘DC’ came at him, he would, of course, return fire:

“I’m not pissed off, and I never met the guy,” Mora said. “I know of him, I know that he is the UFC champion. I know that he also does analyst work for the MMA, and I just think it was unprofessional – and yeah, you come at me like an asshole, I’m going to return it.”

Biased Call By Sergio Mora?

Alvarez beat Jacobs via unanimous decision, with judges rendering scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 for the fan favorite. Those scores suggested a close fight. But Cormier took issue with the announcing, saying that Mora was incredibly biased for Alvarez.

Show host Cooney, a former heavyweight title challenger himself, did admit he was disappointed by the fight. But he supported Mora, noting the former champ has “just got to let it go and keep moving forward and talking the game you know.” Mora appreciated that sentiment and understanding.

He noted that it was tough to transition from defending yourself in a fight to defending yourself as a commentator. If the heavyweight champ from MMA criticized him, however, he had one response:

“That’s because you’re a fighter turned commentator, Gerry,” Mora said. “They don’t realize how hard it is. So, yeah, the transition is difficult, and as a fighter, we don’t take criticism lightly because if we get criticized in a fight, we go in there and whoop someone’s ass. You can’t do that as a broadcaster.

“Broadcasters just have to suck it up, unless the heavyweight champion in another sport does it, then (expletive) him.”
