After the madness that was UFC 223 last week, it was refreshing to have a fight card with little drama and big excitement in last night’s (Sat., April 14, 2018) UFC on FOX 29 from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

As expected, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje threw down in 2018’s ‘Fight of the Year’ frontrunner (watch full highlights here) in the main event, capping off a wholly exciting card overall that featured several exciting knockouts.

Although Matt Brown was scratched from the co-main event, we still got a barnburner in Carlos Condit against Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira, and aside from that, the entire card went off without a hitch.

Saturday proved that sometimes the best cards are the least promoted, and when dust was settled, UFC on FOX 29 delivered. Check out the five biggest takeaways from last night’s card right here.

5. Brad Tavares Scores First Finish Since 2011

Brad Tavares has been on the UFC roster for eight years and had only scored one finish in that time.

The Hawaiian was arguably in a must-win situation against Krzysztof Jotko and did so in emphatic fashion. Tavares’ striking looked crisp, eventually scoring his first TKO since defeating Phil Baroni back at UFC 125 in 2011.

Tavares called out former divisional champion Michael Bisping following the fight, and honestly, it’s not a bad matchup for either man. But it’s not one that will do anything for Bisping in his final fight, so don’t expect to see it happen soon.

Tavares is on the up and up, so he should be looking for a fighter in a similar spot in his next bout to see who can rise up even more.

Longtime UFC middleweight veteran Brad Tavares has enjoyed a career resurgence of sort as of late, and he kept that up by scoring quite possibly his biggest win versus Krzysztof Jotko on the FOX-aired prelims of tonight’s (Sat., April 14, 2018) UFC on FOX 29 from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The Hawaiian slugger looked impressive from the bell, stalking Jotko with a varied assault of calm, calculated offense and grappling savvy against the fence. It was a close fight for the opening two rounds, but Tavares was able to capitalize on Jotko opening himself up while throwing his uppercut, landing a massive right hand that continued the exciting finishes on the card after Gilbert Burns’ walk-off KO of Dan Moret.

It was also Tavares’ fourth straight win in the UFC middleweight arena in since a first-round knockout loss to current UFC champion Robert Whittaker in May 2015, and his first finish since he knocked out Phil Baroni in his second UFC fight in 2011.

UFC 216 Notable Bouts – Moraga vs. Bibulatov, Leites vs. Tavares

UFC 216 – John Moraga Vs. Magomed Bibulatov

Magomed Bibulatov had his sheer existence among the ranks of the UFC and its roster in itself has proven to be a bit of a hassle for the UFC. This fighter from Russia, has managed to stay on the UFC against all odds and has done so pretty comfortably so far.

He has looked a solid, well rounded fighter so far in his career and the UFC have now stepped up his challenges. Bibulatov will now face experienced flyweight John Moraga.

While Moraga’s prime may be behind him, there is no denying that he is still a serious challenger and will most certainly put Bibulatov through his paces come UFC 216.

Can Bibulatov come out on top in this test? The odds seem to suggest he can! If he does, the UFC are going to have to scratch their heads about how they will promote him and what they plan for his future.

Thales Leites Vs. Brad Tavares

If there is one fight on the card for UFC 216 wherein both fighters are high on confidence, then it has to be Thales Leites Vs. Brad Tavares. Both fighters are coming into this fight on the back of strong winning streaks that have boosted their confidences sky high. In his last outing, Leites beat Sam Alveyand Tavares’ most recent fight was a convincing victory against Elias Theodorou.

If there is one thing we know about the UFC, they are not fans of letting fighters from the middle ranks break into the top 5s and so on. So, what are they going to do about it? Simple, they will pit them against each other. Ergo, Thales Leities Vs. Brad Tavares is scheduled for October 7th and someone will have to be on the losing end.

This is a difficult one to call. In terms of morale, both fighters are close to 100%, but Leites has the upper hand in terms of experience. However, this is going to make for a very technical, highly competitive and interesting fight given that both fighters are excellent grapplers.
