In a Bloody Elbow exclusive, Jeff Lacy’s manager, Joey Gilbert, described the details of the upcoming boxing event between current Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and former International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy.
According to Gilbert, Nick Diaz will earn no less than his purse from his last MMA bout with Paul Daley, which was $175,000.
Additionally, Gilbert stated that Lacy was willing to accept a pay cut less than Diaz’s purse to ensure that this fight would take place.
With the amount of money guaranteed to the fighters, Gilbert is hopeful that a network will pick up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a current MMA champion face a former boxing champion in the middle of the squared circle.
“Right now, we’re ready to go with an independent pay-per-view, but Showtime would be crazy not to pick this up. Jeff Lacy made his name on Showtime and Nick Diaz is a champion in mixed martial arts and a Showtime fighter,” Gilbert stated.
Currently, Showtime’s interest in the fight is unknown. The marketing prospect of Diaz as a boxer with respect to Showtime was not part of the original marketing equation. Therefore, whether or not Showtime will air this fight remains a question.
What is known is that this bout will be a 10-round fight.
Stay tuned in the near future as more details unfold.

Lyoto Machida can’t seem to get enough attention these days following his UFC 129 win over Randy Couture.
The Brazilian’s highlight reel knockout has not only been considered a Knockout of the Year candidate, but the spectacular finish also caught the eye of a familiar foe: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
Rua praised the former UFC light heavyweight champion for his win over Couture, commenting on his finishing ability.
“It really was a beautiful kick, but I knew he’d win”, Rua said to TATAME.com
Rua also acknowledged the fact that he will meet Machida again at some point in his career. The two Brazilians have met on two previous occasions that saw each of them walk away with a win, ultimately setting up a third bout, which according to Rua seems inevitable.
“Lyoto absolutely is a guy I might have to fight again someday, and I believe I will. I don’t know when, but it’ll happen.”
After relinquishing his light heavyweight title to Jon Jones at UFC 128, Rua will return to the Octagon at UFC Rio where he will square off against Forrest Griffin, who also holds a victory over Rua from their first encounter at UFC 76.
Should Rua get past Griffin at UFC Rio, it is possible that a trilogy would likely occur between the two light heavyweights in the near future.

A knockout and then a proposal made it one heck of a weekend for MMA fighter Bryan Baker.
Baker threw a left hook to the chin of Joe Riggs in Round 2. Riggs went down and it was all over. Baker won the special feature fight at Bellator 43. Baker is now 9-1 in his last 10 fights.
He brought his girlfriend in the cage and dropped to one knee to propose. He confessed his love to the hottie and she said yes. Congrats to the love birds.
You have to give Baker big props here. This was clearly a pre-planned proposal, which means he felt very confident he would be beating Riggs.
It takes a lot of guts to propose to a girl in a live national broadcast or in front of thousands of people.
My only thoughts on this is what would he have done had he lost? No way you want to propose after losing a big fight. He would have had to wait quite a while before popping the question. I doubt this WAG would want to be with a loser.
The worst part of this video is Baker’s now fiance screaming her head off after he knocked out Riggs. It starts around the :20 mark. You can’t even hear the announcer she is screaming so loud.
Maybe she knew if he won he would pop the question. I don’t know about that, nor do I know how Baker would put up with that screeching voice.

Think back to the summer of 2009. Rumors were swirling about the Ultimate Fighting Championship bringing its December pay per view, UFC 107, to the city of Memphis for its first UFC event.
The original main event set was to be an epic battle between the city’s native son, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and fellow Ultimate Fighter coach Rashad Evans. Tempers were high during the entire 10th season of the show and fight fans were anticipating an all-out brawl.
The brilliant idea would undoubtedly sell out in minutes and be watched by millions around the world.
However, as quickly as the rumors emerged, they disappeared, as Rampage decided instead to take a movie role to play B.A. Baracus in the summer blockbuster “A-Team,” a role Rampage has always longed to play.
Jackson would later announce his retirement from MMA so that he could focus on his acting career.
Jackson has since returned to the octagon, signing a three fight deal and has gone 1-1 since. He and Evans would finally meet to settle their differences, but Jackson came out on the losing end in a fight that UFC President Dana White referred to as a “snoozefest.”
Jackson would then fight former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in Detroit, Michigan and narrowly squeak out the decision victory.
Now, as Jackson focuses on his next opponent, wrestler and TUF alum Matt Hamill at UFC 130, the idea of his retirement from MMA has once again come about.
According to Five Knuckles, Rampage has said that when he gets that next big movie role, that will spell the end to his career in MMA.
“Honestly, I’ve been known for keeping it real and I have to keep it real,” Jackson said. “As soon as movies start paying me more than I make to fight, I’m gone. It don’t hurt to make movies. It don’t hurt that bad. Everyday I train. Everyday I’m like, ‘Man, I can’t wait until I get another big movie.'”
Jackson would go on to say that he, unlike Randy Couture, has no plans of fighting until he is 40. He also does not want to come work for the UFC office after he is done fighting, like legend Chuck Liddell, who was forced into retirement by UFC President Dana White.
“I’m not coming to work inside the UFC office when I retire. That’s not me,” Jackson said. “I’m an entertainer, I like making people laugh. I like doing movies, action moves and stuff like that. I might even try to be a comedian one day, who knows?
When asked about what the fans would think, Jackson stated that some fans are being selfish with wanting him to continue to fight.
The fans, according to Jackson, do not realize that he has four kids that he still needs to put through college and working in Hollywood would not only pay more, but it would also be less physically demanding.
Jackson talked about how he does not want to lead the fans on and make them think that he is going to be in MMA for another 10 or so years, but wants them to have a good time while he is still around.
“I’m just here to fight people,” Jackson said. “I’m here to just make you laugh and give you exciting fights. I’m not cocky like these other guys. I’m not a big arrogant fighter and stuff like that.”
Although this is not the first time fight fans have heard this song and dance from Rampage, it seems that his days inside the octagon are numbered.
However, a win over Hamill would put him right back in title contention, and a date with current champ Jon Jones may keep Jackson around for a little longer.

Bleacher Report’s John Heinis:
ESPN.com has released their latest top 10 pound-for-pound list for MMA. Six members of the ESPN staff weighed in on the issue, including MMA Live host Jon Anik.
UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva was the unanimous pick for the top spot on the list, while welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was able to lock down the second spot.
St-Pierre’s stock undoubtedly took a hit after winning a snoozefest against Jake Shields at UFC 129, with not one voter picking GSP over Silva this time.
Anik actually felt that St-Pierre’s performance was so underwhelming, that he personally felt that light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was more deserving of the second spot than GSP was.
Jones ended up ranked No. 3 on the list, surprisingly passing up UFC featherweight title holder Jose Aldo.
This change is probably the most controversial one on the list, as Aldo has not lost since 2005; his sole career loss, and has won 12 fights in a row since then.

Two of the brightest prospects in Strikeforce’s heavyweight division, Shane Del Rosario (11-0) and Daniel Cormier (7-0) were set to meet on the Strikeforce Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament: Overeem vs. Werdum card; however that fight is off after Del Rosario was involved in a car accident.
According to MMAJunkie.com, the accident occurred on April 14. According to their report, Del Rosario was at a complete stop at a traffic light when he was hit by another driver. The accident totaled Del Rosario’s car.
Del Rosario’s trainer Colin Oyama said he feared that the injuries that Del Rosario sustained are bad enough to keep him from ever fighting again.
“He’s planning on [fighting], but the injuries are serious enough to where it’s kind of in question whether he can or not. We’re hoping that he can. We’ll know more in six months.”
If and when Del Rosario can train he will have the distraction of a possible lawsuit against the other driver.
“Obviously, he’s contacted an attorney, and he’s gone to some of the best specialists around, so we’ll see,” said Oyama. “Zuffa and Strikeforce have definitely helped with that.”
At this time, Strikeforce has not announced if they will seek a new opponent for Cormier for the June 18 card, which will take place at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
