Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have one of the greatest rivalries the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen.

They’re also both two of the biggest stars in the UFC today. However, as of now, Diaz has been the more active fighter, ending a three-year layoff this past weekend with a win over Anthony Pettis at UFC 241. As for McGregor, he continues to get himself into trouble outside of the Octagon, forcing fans to question whether or not the Irishman will ever fight again.

Speaking on the matter in the latest episode of his podcast, “Below The Belt,” former UFC heavyweight star-turned-comedian, Brendan Schaub, offered his take on the matter. Schaub made the case for why Diaz has seemingly overtaken McGregor as the UFC’s top fan-favorite star. Especially after McGregor recently punched an elderly man over a ridiculous whiskey dispute. “I think now because what Conor’s doing we’re all like, ‘alright man, we’re out.’ And then Nate Diaz somehow gone from heel to [face] and we’re like, we’re rooting for him. We want him to get paid, we want to see him fight big fights.

“Yeah you’re kinda like, ‘holy f*ck. Nate Diaz is the good dude here.’ Just because what Conor, all the shenanigans he’s done. And for me to go, ‘dude I can’t defend you’ is a truckload.”

Diaz has the chance to solidify himself even further as the UFC’s new top star. He is currently in discussions to fight Jorge Masvidal in his next Octagon appearance, which has the potential to be the biggest fight of the year. Both Diaz and Masvidal are heavy fan favorites. A clash between the pair would certainly be a spectacle of an event.

Do you think Diaz has overtaken McGregor as the new top fan-favorite in the UFC?

UFC is back on big ESPN this Saturday for UFC Newark. The main event is no doubt an interesting bout as Colby Covington takes on Robbie Lawler. Yet, after that, the card is lacking big names, and former UFC fighter, Brendan Schaub agrees.

“This weekend’s fights, I couldn’t tell you who’s on them,” Schaub said on his Below The Belt podcast (transcript via MMA News). “I don’t know. I know the main event, other than that I don’t know who the f*ck is on it. I know four people on the main card of this UFC.

“This weekend I’m in Nashville,” he added later. “I think my Saturday show’s sold out. That’s how sh*tty this card is. So it’s like who’s watching it? I don’t know man. But these fights are so bad.”

Although he thinks this Saturday’s card is bad, he is looking forward to an upcoming card.

“Dude these cards are … this is what you get man,” he said. “But then that Aug. 17 [card] in Anaheim, ‘DC’ [vs. Miocic 2], stacked.”

UFC Newark goes down on Aug. 3 with the main card airing at 3 p.m. ET. The full card is below:

  • Robbie Lawler vs. Colby Covington

Former UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has been treated unfairly her entire career according to Brendan Schaub.

Cyborg recently demanded apologies from UFC president Dana White and commentator Joe Rogan for out of line comments they’ve made in the past about her.

In particular, she has recently accused White of being a bully and a liar who is damaging her brand, especially with the latter continually claiming she’s afraid of taking a rematch with Amanda Nunes.

Cyborg Never Had A Good Relationship With The UFC

Former UFC heavyweight Schaub can only sympathize with Cyborg:

“A lot of this hate for her despite her physical looks, her physical traits, would be because the narrative the UFC paints every time of her,” Schaub said on his podcast (via BJ Penn). “Like Dana White goes, ‘she doesn’t want to fight Amanda Nunes,’ so then everyone jumps on that. Or he said she looks like Wanderlei Silva with braids, so Dana gives everybody the OK to sh*t on Cyborg. She’s never been treated right her entire career.”

“When she fought for Scott Coker [at Strikeforce], he highlighted her, treated her right, but outside that man, it’s always been this kinda sad story. Especially her UFC career. You gotta remember when she came to the UFC they went, ‘yeah come on over, but you gotta make 140.’ She’s like, ‘what the f*ck man?’ She’s just never had a good relationship [with the UFC]. They’ve never kind of rallied around her. It’s heartbreaking.”

Cyborg fought the last fight on her UFC deal when she defeated Felicia Spencer at UFC 240 this past weekend. She is open to testing free agency, but added that any chance of her re-signing with the UFC hinges on White publicly apologizing to her.

For her part, she seems to want a UFC stay, especially as she continues to campaign for a rematch with Nunes.

Do you agree with Schaub? What do you make of his comments?
