Cody Garbrandt stops Brian Kelleher with vicious face plant KO in UFC 296 return

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt has two in two straight victories for the first time since his 2016 championship coronation, face-plantting opponent, Brian Kelleher with a brutal opening round KO on the preliminary card of UFC 296 tonight in Las Vegas.

Garbrandt, a former undisputed bantamweight titleholder, most recently featured at UFC 285 back in March, snapping is disappointing losing skid with a one-sided unanimous decision win over Trevin Jones — showing off his often overlooked wrestling in the process.

And tonight against the returning, Kelleher, Ohio veteran, Garbrandt showed off his usual, lightning-quick blitzing style, wobbling the former on the feet midway through the opening round.

And rushing forward, although more composed than we’ve seen him in the past, Garbrandt laid out Kelleher with a picture-perfect right hand hook, dropping the former face first to the Octagon canvas.

Following his knockout win over Kelleher, Garbrandt called for a return to the Octagon in March or April of next year against recent divisional mover and former undisputed flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo.

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Cody Gabrandt is set for his first Octagon walk since March earlier this year, booking a final flagship event of the annum return at UFC 296 in December, taking on Brian Kelleher at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Garbrandt, a former undisputed bantamweight champion under the banner of the Dana White-led organization, is slated to feature at UFC 296 on December 16. in ‘Sin City’ – returning to the Octagon for the first time since he defeated Trevin Jones with a unanimous decision win at UFC 285 back in March.

As for Kelleher, New York native looks to snap a two-fight losing skid and back-to-back submission losses to both Said Nurmagomedov, and Mario Bautista when he tackles Garbrandt in December, making his sixteenth Octagon appearance since a 2017 bow. News of Cody Garbrandt’s return against Brian Kelleher was first reported by Eurosport reporter, Marcel Dorff.

Cody Garbrandt books UFC 296 fight with Brian Kelleher in December

“BREAKING, former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt returns on December 16th at #UFC296,” Dorff posted on X. “”No Love” takes on Brian “Boom” Kelleher in Las Vegas.”

Winning undisputed bantamweight gold back in 2016 with a stunning win over former two-time champion, Dominick Cruz, Garbrandt, who entered the bout as a sizeable betting underdog, turned in a comprehensive and one-sided unanimous decision victory.

Dropping the title afterwards in a grudge match knockout loss to former two-time titleholder, T.J. Dillashaw, Garbrandt would experience a staggering downturn in form, losing 5 of his next seven walks since 2017, including four separate knockout blemishes.

During his route to the title, Garbrandt turned in impressive stoppage wins over Marcus Brimage, Thomas Almeida, and Takeya Mizugaki.

Landing a Knockout of the Year winner on many’s cards in 2020, Garbrandt took out Brazilian veteran, Raphael Assuncao with a buzzer-beating one-punch KO win at the UFC Apex facility, snapping a three-fight losing skid in brutal fashion.

MMA News has you covered with this week’s matchmaking bulletin, featuring fights for top-five flyweight Alexandre Pantoja, bantamweight veteran Brian Kelleher, and powerhouse Kennedy Nzechukwu.

With UFC cards being held most weekends, Mick Maynard and Sean Shelby have their matchmaking work cut out if they’re to fill them, meaning new bouts are confirmed each and every week.

In recent days, a number of huge fights were reported, confirmed or made official by the UFC and reputable sources. For more information on those matchups, check out the links below:

If you’ve had your fix of big announcements since last Monday, scroll down and check out this week’s matchmaking bulletin, featuring a number of bouts that may have flown under your radar between June 6 and June 11.

Brian Kelleher vs. Mario Bautista – UFC Vegas 57 (June 25)

Later this month, bantamweight veteran Brian Kelleher will enter the Octagon for the third time in 2022 and 15th time in his UFC career. At UFC Vegas 57 on June 25, the 35-year-old will look to return to the win column at the expense of prospect Mario Bautista.

Kelleher (24-13) has faced some of the best since joining the MMA leader in 2017, sharing the cage with the likes of of current ONE champion John Lineker, the great Renan Barão, and current top-five contender Marlon “Chito” Vera.

After a defeat on the scorecards to ranked bantamweight Ricky Simón last February, Kelleher won consecutive fights for the third time in his UFC tenure, including a featherweight victory over Kevin Croom in January this year. But he failed to secure his first three-fight win streak in the Octagon at UFC 272, falling to a submission at the hands of surging prospect Umar Nurmagomedov.

The veteran is now set to go toe-to-toe with another prospect as he looks to rebound. Bautista (9-2) has gone 3-2 since entering the UFC as an undefeated up-and-comer, with one of the losses coming at the hands of former interim title challenger Cory Sandhagen.

Having returned to the win column last time out against Jay Perrin, the 28-year-old will look to further establish his name in the division with a win over fan favorite “Boom” Kelleher.

This matchup was first reported by Bautista’s management team, Iridium Sports Agency.

Karl Roberson vs. Kennedy Nzechukwu – UFC Vegas 58 (July 9)

UFC Vegas 58 looks set to have a tough act to follow, coming just a week after UFC 276 headlines International Fight Week. Looking to do their best to match the pay-per-view action will be light heavyweights Karl Roberson and Kennedy Nzechukwu.

Roberson (9-5), a nine-fight UFC veteran, is perhaps on his final life inside the Octagon. After winning four of his first six outings, with one of the losses coming to former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira, the American’s form fell off a cliff.

First, in a bad blood co-main event with Marvin Vettori, “Baby K” missed weight by a mammoth 4.5 pounds and was submitted in just one round. He then fell to a two-fight skid at middleweight courtesy of another submission, this time at the hands of Brendan Allen. His attempt to rebound back at 205 pounds earlier this year didn’t go to plan, with Khalil Rountree Jr. stopping him via TKO in the second round.

Also looking to bounce back from a skid will be Nzechukwu (9-3). Roberson’s fellow Dana White’s Contender Series alum showed immense promise after bonus-worthy knockouts of Carlos Ulberg and Danilo Marques left him 3-1 in the Octagon, with the only loss being to ranked contender Paul Craig.

But after back-to-back defeats against Da Un Jung and Nicolae Negumereanu, the 29-year-old Nigerian is in desperate need of finding his way back into the win column.

It’ll be three-fight skid versus two-fight skid on July 9, with both men’s places on the UFC roster perhaps on the line. This matchup was first reported by Paradigm Sports.

Nathaniel Wood vs. Charles Rosa – UFC London (July 23)

Thank the Lord, Nathaniel Wood finally has a fight.

Wood (17-5) hasn’t been in a action since a unanimous decision loss to Casey Kenney in October 2020. After a bout with Jonathan Martinez was shelved, the Englishman sat out 2021, with his sights set on an impactful 2022 comeback.

If everything had gone to plan, that would have happened in front of a home crowd on March 19. “The Prospect” was initially scheduled to share the Octagon inside The O2 with Liudvik Sholinian. But when he pulled out due to the war in Ukraine, featherweight Vince Morales stepped into save the day, or so we thought.

Just days before the memorable event, “Vendetta” withdrew through illness, leaving Wood without an opponent and watching his compatriots thrill the English crowd from the side. But now, after a long search for a willing opponent, it appears that Wood has gotten his wish in the former of veteran 145lber Charles Rosa.

Rosa (14-7) has competed in the Octagon since 2014, facing the likes of Yair Rodriguez, Shane Burgos, and Bryce Mitchell. “Boston Strong” looks set to enter enemy territory on July 23 and will look to rebound from an unsuccessful lightweight bout against TJ Brown last time out.

This addition to UFC London was first reported by Al Zullino, with Wood himself later confirming his participation on July 23.

Alexandre Pantoja vs. Alex Perez – UFC 277 (July 30)

Former flyweight title challenger Alex Perez was originally set to be in action at UFC Long Island on July 16. However, his scheduled opponent, #3-ranked Askar Askarov, was forced to withdraw.

With that , the UFC has made a like-for-like substitution, rankings-wise, with Askarov’s fellow #3 contender Alexandre Pantoja stepping into face Perez two weeks later at UFC 277.

When he makes the walk on July 30, Perez (24-6) will be doing so for the first time since a failed attempt at dethroning Deiveson Figueiredo in November 2020’s UFC 255 main event, which saw him submitted in less than two minutes. Thanks to a failed booking against Askarov and a cursed pairing with Matt Schnell, 2021 marked Perez’s first inactive year since he made his professional debut in 2011.

When he makes his comeback, Perez will be hoping to find the form that led him to 6-1 in the UFC prior to meeting “Deus Da Guerra.” But that will be no easy task against Pantoja (24-5), who can perhaps feel unlucky not to be fighting for the title. The Brazilian seemingly cemented himself as the first challenger to Brandon Moreno late last year after back-to-back victories over Manel Kape and Brandon Royval.

But after a knee injury prevented him from making the desired December date, Figueiredo stepped in, and after a one-month delay, regained the gold. Now back to full health, “The Cannibal” will be looking to move back in line for a championship opportunity at the expense of the returning Perez.

This matchup was first reported by AgFight.

Umar Nurmagomedov

Umar Nurmagomedov continues to turn in eye-catching performances — this time at the featherweight limit, making relatively short work of Brian Kelleher to land an impressive first round rear-naked choke on the early preliminary card of UFC 272.

Nurmagomedov, the cousin of former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov — who was in the former’s corner, managed to leap on the back of Kelleher at the Octagon fence just beyond the third minute of the opening frame — eventually linking his hands beneath the neck of Kelleher — forcing a submission stoppage victory.

Following the victory, the undefeated Nurmagomedov announced his intentions to return to his usual bantamweight limit of 135lbs for his next Octagon outing.

UFC’s January 15th card has suffered a few changes just a few days before it is set to happen.

The upcoming “Fight Night” card lost two matchups Wednesday, although one of them has already been accounted for with a new short-notice opponent.

Undisclosed reasons have forced former CFFC Bantamweight Champion Saidyokub Kakhramonov out of his fight against Brian Kelleher, per a report from MyMMANews.com.

UFC is currently in talks to replace Kakhramonov with Kevin Croom. News of the new matchup was first reported by Damon Martin of MMA Fighting, saying it has not been finalized but is near completion.

The potential matchup gives Croom a chance to score his first UFC win. His last appearance was a loss to Alex Caceres in February 2021. Croom is going from one veteran opponent to another with this matchup of him against Kelleher.

Kelleher returned to the win column in his last showing, going three rounds against Domingo Pilarte for a unanimous decision win in August.

Juarez vs. Demopoulos Moved To UFC 270

Saturday’s card also lost a fight between strawweights Silvana Gomez Juarez and Vanessa Demopoulos, per MMA Fighting. The matchup is now expected to happen a week later, taking place at UFC 270 on January 22nd.

Both fighters will be competing for their first UFC win. Demopoulos, a former LFA Strawweight Champion, lost her promotional debut to JJ Aldrich in August. Two months later, Juarez lost her respective UFC debut against Loopy Godinez.

The recent changes bring Saturday’s UFC card down to 10 bouts in total. It has suffered numerous changes throughout the week, including the departure of a co-main event fight between Michel Pereira and Muslim Salikhov. Pereira has since been matched against UFC newcomer Andre Fialho for the pay-per-view card later this month.

UFC’s January 15th card is currently set to be headlined by featherweights Giga Chikadze and Calvin Kattar.

What do you think about these recent changes? Do you like the new bantamweight matchup?

[UPDATE]

According to Brian Kelleher, he and “Sugar” Sean O’Malley have an upcoming engagement.

Last month, Kelleher shot his shot when calling out O’Malley for a fight. Kelleher felt that the fact that he was unranked put him at an advantage to get accepted by O’Malley. This is because O’Malley has recently stated that he prefers fighting unranked opponents if he is getting paid the same. And though Kelleher has been ranked in the past, he does not currently have a number next to his name.

O’Malley recently turned down a fight against Frankie Edgar pitched for November’s UFC 268 and has stated that he prefers to fight in December instead. If Kelleher’s tweet is to be believed after being read between its few lines, then it seems as though Kelleher’s callout has paid off.

“She said yes @SugaSean,” the tweet reads with an engagement ring emoji.

Following this tweet, MMA reporter Mike Heck provided the update that no fight has been officially offered as of yet, but there is some interest from both teams in putting the fight together for UFC 269 in December. Perhaps Kelleher is privy to direct knowledge of just how deep that interest runs from O’Malley himself.

As always, MMA News will keep you posted on this developing story and deliver any updates regarding any formal fight agreement between these two bantamweights.

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AUGUST 23, 2021, 12:00 PM]

UFC bantamweight Brian Kelleher called out Sean O’Malley following his dominant victory over Domingo Pilarte at UFC Vegas 34, offering to give “Sugar” the unranked opponent he’s after.

Kelleher, who has fought twelve times since making his promotional debut in 2017, made his second appearance of this year during this past weekend’s prelims. Pilarte, meanwhile, entered the cage for the first time since last February.

After defeats to Cody Stamann and Ricky Simón interrupted solid victories over Hunter Azure and Ray Rodriguez, “Boom” was looking to rebound in style and begin a more consistent run of wins. After three rounds of comfortable control, the 35-year-old had done exactly that.

Looking to continue his trend of remaining as active as possible, Kelleher wasted no time in calling out a big name for his next fight. During his post-fight interview inside the Octagon, the New York native set his sights on Sean O’Malley.

After taking shots at “Sugar” for hanging out with rapper 6ix9ine, and for getting a tattoo dedicated to the controversial figure, Kelleher staked his claim to be the unranked opponent O’Malley wants to face.

“O’Malley, stop it with the 6ix9ine tattoos. What kind of guys you hangin’ out with? You should have got a tattoo of a vagina. You know you don’t want to fight any ranked guys, so here I am. Business is booming.” (h/t Sportskeeda)

Kelleher’s comments come after O’Malley revealed his desire to continue fighting unranked opponents in the UFC despite his rising stardom. The 26-year-old explained that he’d get paid the same to face someone outside of the top 15 as he would to face a top five name.

O’Malley was last in action at UFC 264 last month. After the withdrawal of Louis Smolka, “Sugar” faced promotional newcomer Kris Moutinho. Despite an incredible display of toughness from the debutant, he was finally stopped with less than 30 seconds of the main card opener remaining.

Despite perhaps not finding the highlight reel finish he’d been after, O’Malley put in an impressive performance on the feet that saw him break the record for the most significant strikes landed in a UFC bantamweight fight. He’ll be looking to continue his rise to the top when he makes his next walk to the Octagon.
