UFC president Dana White has confirmed that the winner of the UFC Fight Island 6 main event will be next in line for a shot at featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. Speaking to ESPN prior to card White was absolute when saying the winner of Otega-Korean Zombie is next in line at 145lbs, he said.

“It’s absolutely the No. 1 contender fight. First of all, it’s the fight that should’ve happened a long time ago. We’re finally here, with all the crazy stuff that’s happened and all the crazy things that always happen in this business. For us to finally be here, the ‘Zombie’ vs. Ortega, absolutely the winner of this fight should get the next title shot.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Volkanovski has twice defeated featherweight great Max Holloway to establish himself at the 145lb king. The Australian first upset Holloway at UFC 245 late last year before edging out a split decision against ‘Blessed’ earlier this summer. Many fans have demanded the UFC re-run the fight for the third time but ‘The Great’ is determined to face new challengers, in particular, ‘The Korean Zombie’ who has been trash-talking him.

“[Korean] Zombie keeps running his mouth, even though he’s got another one before him, but I mean, still, that’s always intriguing, that’s a fun fight,” Volkanovski told Submission Radio recently. “You know he’s just going to look for the finish, which, again, if someone is just going to be aggressive like that, that’s good for me, that’s a fun fight.

Ortega is fighting for the first time in almost two years this coming weekend. The popular 145lb fighter was dominated and stopped in his lone UFC title shot against Max Holloway in 2018. Prior to that he beat Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson and Renato Moicano to establish himself as the top contender.

‘The Korean Zombie’ picked up two first-round knockouts in 2019 after being flatlined by Yair Rodríguez in the last seconds of their five-round fight in November 2018.

Brian Ortega will have to face The Korean Zombie without the guidance of head coach Rener Gracie.

Ortega meets Korean Zombie in the UFC Fight Island 6 headliner this Saturday in what is a highly-anticipated featherweight affair.

For Ortega, it will be his first outing since suffering a brutal fourth-round TKO defeat to Max Holloway in their featherweight title fight back in December 2018. And his task has become even harder following Gracie’s positive COVID-19 test.

Gracie had actually tested positive for COVID-19 a month ago along with his wife. They later tested negative only for Gracie to test positive again during the UFC’s recent testing procedure in Las Vegas before flying out to Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Gracie was hoping he would still be able to go due to his previous negative tests but was told that the residual effects of COVID-19 would remain in his body for three months in addition to the fact that there could be complications in Abu Dhabi.

Gracie posted about the news on social media late last week.

“They said ‘Rener, if you get to Abu Dhabi, and you test positive there, you’re gonna quarantine for 14 days in Abu Dhabi before they even let you come home,” Gracie said. “And you’re not gonna be able to go to the fight. You won’t be participating in anything.’ There’s zero tolerance. … Even though you’re not contagious, you can’t go with a positive COVID test. You guys, I was so bummed.

“Of course, I let Brian know. … He’s super bummed but I assured him. I said, ‘Brian, luckily, this skillset that I bring to the table and that I’ve coached you for over 15 years in, is the most ingrained in you. Of all your skillsets in fighting. And it’s the one that you least need coaching on. So if anyone has to stay behind, it should be me.’”

Brian Ortega Views Alexander Volkanovski As An ‘Interesting Challenge’

Brian Ortega would be lying if he said he didn’t think of how a potential fight with UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski would go.

Ortega is set to return to action when he faces The Korean Zombie in a highly-anticipated affair in the UFC Fight Island 6 headliner on October 17. It will be his first outing since suffering a brutal fourth-round TKO defeat to Max Holloway for the featherweight title back in December 2018.

Although “T-City” has a tough task ahead of him, victory will more than likely see him earn another title shot. As for how a fight with Volkanovski would go, it’s certainly an intriguing prospect for Ortega who has thought about the matchup before.

“I’ve thought about the guy for sure,” Ortega told MMA Fighting. “I just look at him as an interesting challenge. Can I keep it technical with him and can I play his game? Or do I play his game or do I make it a dogfight? … For me, if I would try to be too technical with him and then if that’s not working I’d just basically make it a dogfight. Sometimes it goes well for me, for the majority of my career it’s gone well.

“But what Max [Holloway] did kind of exposed me as not the best technical guy, so I had to go back in there and fix the patience game, you know? I hate it. You have warriors in there and you have fighters, but they’re both different. Neither is better than the other one—I mean, the one that wins, but I was more of the mentality of the warrior that doesn’t quit. Let’s just go in there and test each other’s will, that was always my mentality. Either I’m gonna get finished or you’re gonna get finished. But in this game, you have to have some smarts and you’re gonna run into people that know how to play human chess, not just f**king warriors and it was a lesson for me.”

Ortega now has a chance to show his new patience game when he faces The Korean Zombie — if it doesn’t turn out to be a dog fight, that is.

And while there are other contenders like Zabit Magomedsharipov, Yair Rodriguez and Calvin Kattar all looking to earn the next title shot, Ortega firmly believes the winner of his fight is the one who will get the next crack — especially after UFC president Dana White built the fight up as a number one contender matchup.

“He [White] said everything about our fight being for the No. 1 contender, but then I heard some other news with Zabit and all this stuff and everyone saying they had No. 1 contention,” Ortega added. “But I was like, ‘Where’s your proof versus mine?’ I got video proof.

“So now that he kind of went out there and just restated that, it makes me feel better. More confirmation that whoever wins this fight will get a crack at that belt.”

The Korean Zombie experimented with some trash talking but will no longer be partaking in it.

The former featherweight title challenger is finally set to face Brian Ortega when they clash on October 17. It’s a fight that has been nearly a year in the making after they were initially set to collide in December only for Ortega to pull out through injury.

That led to some claims of ducking from Korean Zombie and has since turned into a heated rivalry with Ortega that culminated in the latter slapping Korean Zombie’s friend, translator and singer Jay Park at UFC 248 in March.

Because of that incident — along with being someone who doesn’t generally play into mind games — Korean Zombie will no longer be trash talking and has apologized to both Ortega as well as featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who he has also gone back-and-forth with in recent times.

“I am not a person who enjoys trash talking, but I tried some of them recently because I thought my fans would like them,” Zombie told MMA Junkie. “But the result was not good and my friend was affected, so I won’t be doing trash talking anymore.

“I apologize for all the trash talking I did to Ortega and the champion, so I hope Ortega won’t continue trash talking to me anymore.”

That said, while Korean Zombie hopes the Park issue is behind them, he was skeptical about Ortega’s apology following the incident after a recent interview.

“Everyone makes mistakes, and I accepted his apology because he sounded sincere when he apologized,” Zombie said. “But a recent interview he had with ESPN made me confused if he was sincere for his apology. To be honest, I feel sympathy for him because it seems he still lives in the past as he mentioned ‘the rule’ where he was from.

“I don’t think it is good for Ortega to keep trash talking this way. I believe he does not want me to go back to the issue deeper. The fact is that he hit a singer, not a fighter. The martial arts he trains in has fame in preventing school violence and bullying. I believe he does not want me to go into more detail about it, so I won’t.”

Trash talk aside, Korean Zombie will finally get to fight Ortega in just under two weeks. And he believes he will solidify his claim for the next shot at Volkanovski’s featherweight crown with a big win.

“Definitely!” Zombie added. “When I win over Ortega, I should be next in line for Volkanovski, (but) at this time, I am focusing on fighting Ortega and not for the title shot, yet.”

Brian Ortega Downplays Jay Park Incident: ‘It Was Just A Slap’

UFC featherweight contender Brian Ortega slapped The Korean Zombie’s friend, Jay Park, back in March. Ortega, however, continues to play down the incident.

Following the incident, Ortega was escorted out of the T-Mobile arena at UFC 248. Korean Zombie was in the bathroom when the altercation took place and urged his friend to press charges. Jay Park ultimately decided not to involve the police.

With Ortega picking up an injury, the scheduled Ortega and Korean Zombie headline fight on the UFC Busan card last December was cancelled. The Korean Zombie fought Frankie Edgar instead that night, and took the win through a first round finish. With the pair set to meet in October, the Ortega slap is once again under the spotlight.

Speaking to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Ortega looks to set the record straight about what went down in March. With Ortega blaming the incident on Jay Park “mouthing off” online. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“Listen, man, I didn’t hit the guy, I didn’t punch the guy or nothing. I was like, just stop with your little antics. You have all these little antics, I’m like just stop with that bro. The fight’s already happening, you don’t gotta pull all these stunts. It got a little like whatever and I was like alright,” says Brian Ortega.

“The internet is full of people who talk sh*t and never have to pay any consequence for it. I don’t know who those people are, but bro I know who you are, and you are kinda mouthing off a little bit. You got a little too much confidence. So I just said it straight.”

The slap has divided fans, but Ortega says it was overblown and everyone was making a big fuss over nothing.

“People don’t agree, that it was immature, whatever, maybe it’s the old me that I kinda gotta check, but it happened. It happened, it is what it was. It was just a slap, dude. These fans pay for our blood, to basically watch us kill each other in the cage, and they’re gonna get offended for a slap. Whatever. My mom slaps me daily when I cuss. It’s a slap. Relax,” Ortega said.

“After I pulled that stunt in Vegas, (the UFC matchmakers) wanted to make this fight. And then it was like ok, anybody else wasn’t offered to us, and the people that were offered were so high up the rankings that it didn’t make sense. And then we’re like yeah alright, Dana White and the people want to see this fight, so we’re like kinda locked into each other,” says Ortega.
