A fight between Brian Ortega and Jeremy Stephens is no longer being discussed as a potential headliner for UFC San Antonio on July 20.

That’s according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani who states that there was talk of booking that featherweight contest. However, Ortega is not healthy enough to accept a fight at the moment.

Ortega had suffered a number of injuries in his featherweight title fight with Max Holloway in December. Among them were a broken nose and broken hand. However, he claimed last month that he was all clear and looking to return in the summer.

But given the latest news, it seems “T-City” may still need some more time before returning to the Octagon.

Helwani added that he preferred Ortega facing Stephens rather than Zabit Magomedsharipov. That fight was also reportedly in the works, but for UFC 240.

Ortega was undefeated before his TKO loss to Holloway, having defeated the likes of Renato Moicano, Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar en route to a title shot.

As for Stephens, he is currently on a two-fight losing run after defeats to Jose Aldo and Magomedsharipov. “Lil’ Heathen” was, however, on a three-fight winning streak before that with wins over Gilbert Melendez, Doo Ho Choi and Josh Emmett.

Brian Ortega is confident that he could beat Iranian Hulk” Sajad Gharibi, who is a powerlifter that has become a sensation on social media. The reason for that is due to his size. Recently, he made it known that he wants to try out some MMA competition.

Gharibi told reporter Chamatkar Sandhu he’s already accepted a fight against a Brazilian opponent and that he plans to fight before 2020.

Ortega recently spoke with TMZ where he made it known that he’s confident he would destroy Gharibi in a fight despite the big weight difference. In fact, there is roughly 250 pounds between the two men. Ortega is 5’8″, 145 while Gharibi is 6’2″, 385.

“I would just gas him out, piss him off,” Ortega tells TMZ Sports. “Of course, you’re gonna see me just get mauled up like a damn little chihuahua in the beginning,” Ortega says … “but just when I ride that wave out, it’s a done deal man. He’ll gas out and he’ll be mine.”

Ortega is coming off the first loss of his pro-MMA career as he lost to UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway by TKO at the UFC 231 pay-per-view event. Ortega lost the fight by doctor stoppage at the end of the fourth round. As of this writing, he doesn’t have his next fight lined up.

An interim UFC lightweight title will be implemented at UFC 236.

The show goes down from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on April 13th. Featherweight champion Max Holloway jumps up to 155 pounds to take on the No. 3-ranked Dustin Poirier for the honors. Recently, former 145-pound title challenger Brian Ortega caught up with Bloody Elbow to give his thoughts on the match-up.

In his last outing, “T-City” was handed the first loss of his professional fighting career by Holloway. The Californian said he thinks the match-up has potential to be Fight Of The Night:

“I’m not too sure, man. I know they fought before. I know Dustin got the better of him when they were young. I think both evolved into very good fighters. Max is not the same Max and Dustin is not the same Dustin. The key points that both of them have: obviously Max has the conditioning, the cardio, being able to throw punches in bunches.

“Then also, Dustin has other hidden weapons that he doesn’t use, and he has great striking as well. I feel like these are the fights I love to watch, because they’re fights you don’t know who to root with, or who to go with — because they’re both so good that they could finish each other. Those are the fights you want to see because that’s how you get fight of the night.”

Poirier and Holloway have fought before. “The Diamond” defeated Holloway for the first time in his fighting career back in 2012. The bout was also the Hawaiian’s first in the UFC. Poirier won the fight in the first round via submission.

Fast-forward seven years later, and Holloway is the king at 145 pounds, Poirier is up at lightweight, and the pair will headline one of the biggest events of the year.

Brian Ortega has a big fight on his mind for his Octagon return.

“T-City” is coming off a failed UFC featherweight title bid against Max Holloway. Now, he’d like to fight the next best option, that being No. 1-ranked ex-featherweight king Jose Aldo.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Ortega said he’d like to share the cage with “Scarface” next, possibly with the vacant 145-pound title if Holloway emerges victorious in his interim lightweight title bout:

“That’s the only fight I see that makes sense for both of us,” Ortega said. “We’re at the top, we’re the two guys at the top, No. 1 and No. 2. Everyone else we pretty much beat except the newcomers and this is the fight that makes sense.

“This is the fight that the fans are gonna want to see and the one thing we have in common is that we both got beat by Max. It’s going to be a great time to fight him and prove who deserves to get the title shot again.

“And if Max decides to stay up at lightweight then we can make this fight happen for the belt.”

Jose Aldo is thriving at the moment, currently on a two-fight win streak. He owns knockout wins over Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano. He’s currently on his first win streak since 2014. Aldo is admittedly in the final stages of his UFC career, and has said in the past he has no interest in fighting for a UFC title.

Perhaps he’ll make an exception to test himself against the 28-year-old jiu-jitsu ace.
