Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu standout, Gunar Nelson continues to notch submission victories during his storied Octagon tenure, tonight wrapping up a late opening round armbar win over Bryan Barberena on the main card of UFC 286.
Nelson, who entered tonight’s matchup with Barberena off the back of an impressive unanimous decision victory over Takashi Sato in his Octagon comeback back in March of last year at The O2 Arena to boot.
Landing his second consecutive victory tonight in his main card matchup with Barberena, Nelson managed to assume half guard in the final minute and a half of the first frame. Eventually stepping over, Gunnar Nelson, a staple of Straight Blast Gym under the guidance of John Kavanagh, landed a late armbar triumph — forcing a tap from Barberena with just less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening round.

UFC welterweight Bryan Barberena accepts call out from up-and-comer, Ian Garry.
Garry, 25, last fought in a winning effort against Gabe Green at UFC 276 in July of last year, marking the Irishman’s third pay-per-view appearance in his three fights for the promotion.
Now though, Gary has turned his attention to welterweight veteran, Barberena, who has fought the who’s who of the UFC 170lb division. Talking to GiveMeSport, Garry explained that his sights are fully locked onto Barberena and hopes to stand across from the American.
“Everything starts with Bryan Barberena”, Garry said. “His last two fights have been against former champions and now he could fight the future champion. “Obviously he beat a teammate of mine in Robbie Lawler so I’d love to get that one back for the team.
“Not that it necessarily means anything to Robbie or the guys but anytime I can beat a guy who has beaten a teammate of mine I’ll always take that opportunity.“
Bryan Barberena responds
Garry would also tweet Barberena, to which of course, the ever-game 33-year-old was quick to accept the proposition.
Barberena has tested some of the very elite in the division before such as Leon Edwards and Colby Covington, but most recently enjoyed his best from in his UFC tenure, compiling a three-fight win streak over Darian Weeks, Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler.
While Barberena might not be world champion material or even ranked, he brings finishing ability, experience and is an undeniably tough matchup. He is the perfect type of fighter for a prospect such as Garry to be measured against, along with being a highly entertaining action fighter

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos returned to the Octagon at UFC Orlando on Saturday night against the streaking Bryan Barberena in a welterweight showdown. Barberena entered the co-main event clash on a three-fight win streak with wins over Darian Weeks, Matt Brown, and Robbie Lawler. Dos Anjos stepped into the Amway Center intent on getting back into the win column following a knockout loss to Rafael Fiziev in July.
Barberena came out immediately putting pressure on RDA. A minute into the opening round, RDA was able to clinch, pushing Barberena to the fence and securing a takedown. RDA put his grappling skills on display, nearly finishing things early with an arm triangle choke, but the fence prevented him from getting the proper positioning. Barberena came out for the second round determined to flip the script by immediately initiating a clinch with dos Anjos.
Unfortunately, the decision did not work out for ‘Bam Bam’ who once again found himself on the canvas with three minutes left in the round. Working his way around to Barberena’s back, RDA was able to lock in a rear-naked choke, forcing ‘Bam Bam’ to tap out in round two.
Official Result: Rafael dos Anjos def. Bryan Barberena via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:20 of Round 2.
