Heading into UFC 129, I thought both welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and featherweight champion Jose Aldo had a good chance of putting on the kind of performance that would move them up in the pound-for-pound rankings.

GSP did what he usually does and won a dominant unanimous decision over a good opponent in Jake Shields, but he didn’t do anything that makes him leapfrog Anderson Silva at the top of the list. And Aldo won a classic battle with Mark Hominick, but it wasn’t the kind of transcendent performance that could put him on top of the MMA world.

So as we review the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts, there’s no change at the top.

It’s not easy for Cain Velasquez to attend fights. The UFC heavyweight champion, who has been on the shelf since his title win over Brock Lesnar last October, is itching to return to the cage.

“Every fight I’ve gone to I’ve been jealous so I can’t wait to get in there,” Velasquez said Monday on The MMA Hour, when asked about attending this past Saturday’s packed UFC 129 event. “I’m hungry. This is what I love doing. This is my dream job, to work out for a living. To not be able to do it right now, it’s kind of hard.”

TORONTO — UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is on track for an October return, and his comeback fight could come on Oct. 8 in Houston, UFC president Dana White said shortly after UFC 129.

Earlier this week, the promotion announced it would visit Houston in the fall with an event and a Fan Expo. On Saturday, White said the event could be targeted for Velasquez to defend his title.

“I don’t know yet but probably,” he said. “It sounds like that would make a lot of sense.”

TORONTO — UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is progressing well while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery, and the UFC is hopeful for an October date for his first title defense.

UFC president Dana White shared the recovery timeline following a UFC 129 press conference.

“Cain’s good,” he said. “He’s coming along great. Actually he’s going to be here for this fight.”
