Max Holloway could be preparing to face Alexander Volkanovski a third time in his next fight.

Holloway returned to the win column in emphatic fashion after a striking masterclass in his lopsided unanimous decision win over Calvin Kattar in the UFC Fight Island 7 headliner on Saturday night.

The manner of the performance led many to call for a trilogy with current featherweight champion Volkanovski. Although Holloway lost both his meetings to the Aussie, there were already calls for him to face him a third time especially as many felt he should have won the rematch.

And with this performance against Kattar, those calls will only continue to increase and as far as UFC president Dana White is concerned, that’s the only fight to make for Holloway.

“I think we have to,” White said at the post-fight press conference of a trilogy. “I think we have to. When you’re the champion, you have the top five guys in the world gunning at you. When you’re the number one contender in the world, you’ve got the top 10 guys in the world. Sometimes, number eight is more dangerous than number three.

“Tonight, he [Holloway] fought a bad dude that a lot of people thought was going to beat him and he went out and treated him like number six. So, he did what he needed to do in spectacular fashion tonight and I think he deserves to fight Volkanovski again.”

For now, Volkanovski is seemingly set to face Brian Ortega at UFC 260 first. But should he come out on top, it looks like we might see a trilogy on our hands.

Do you want to see the trilogy? Who comes out on top?

UFC Fight Island 7

Earlier tonight (Sat. January 16th, 2021) UFC Fight Island 7 took place from a partially filled Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The arena played host to an integral matchup in the UFC Featherweight division between the former champion Max Holloway and rising contender Calvin Kattar. After losing a successful bid to reclaim his title in June of 2020, Holloway looked towards the upcoming contender Kattar to get himself back in the win column and set himself in place for another title fight. This fight proved to be the perfect way to start 2021 delivering a five-round striking clinic hosted by the former champion. In the co-main, two UFC veterans faced off in the Welterweight division. The former interim champion Carlos Condit took on Matt Brown in an excellent three-round war that saw Condit take the decision to claim victory. Outside of these two bouts, the first event of the year proved to be phenomenal with the main card delivering stellar performances and many finishes warranting bonuses.

The First Performance of the Night bonus of the night went to Alessio Di Chirico for his stellar knockout of Joaquin Buckley. The highly-touted prospect was predicted to add yet another highlight-reel finish to his record when taking on Di Chirico, however, it was Buckley who wound up on the end of someone else’s highlight reel knockout. Di Chirico landed a head kick in the middle of the first round and closed the show.

The next Performance of the Night bonus came in the following fight when Li Jinliang pulled off an upset when welcoming back the streaking Welterweight Santiago Ponzinibbio. After a long feeling out process Jinliang was able to find a show that would ultimately close the show and break the winning streak Ponzinibbio had complied before his extended layoff from the sport.

The final bonus, Fight of the Night came in the five-round main event between Max Holloway and Calvin Kattar. This fight showcased how technically sound Holloway is and also just how durable Kattar can be. From the first round, Holloway displayed an extremely high pace and volume landing the most strikes in a UFC fight ever. While Kattar was on the other end of the onslaught, the top-ranking featherweight did have some big shots of his own. These, however, were few and far between. Overall Holloway dominated the fight and won on the judge’s scorecards to put himself back in the win column and as close as possible to the next title shot.

Former UFC featherweight champion, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway is back in the winner’s enclosure — possibly eclipsing his incredible 2018 outing against Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega to boot, snapping a two-fight rise of the number-six ranked Calvin Kattar in a five-round battering.

Blasting out the gate early, Holloway looked incredibly sharp with his hands in the early exchanges of the opening round. Landing a couple of nasty calf kicks, Kattar stifled some of the Hawaiian’s early pressure, sticking well behind his jab as the latter pushing forward as his customary. Landing a couple of decent spinning back-kicks to the midsection before the first round buzzer, Holloway’s sheer activity won him the opening frame.

In an absolutely massive round for the former champion, Holloway split Kattar’s guard with a massive, slicing elbow on two separate occasions, drawing a sizeable cut on the forehead of the Matheun native. Almost scoring a similar buzzing beating high-kick knockdown, Holloway clipped Kattar behind the ear to close the second frame.

Having some better moments in the third round, Kattar landed well with that straight right on occasion, however, it was just more of the same from the onset from Holloway — scoring a series of lengthy combinations with aplomb with some of the best volume striking of his career.

In what’s sure to hold up as a Round of the Year contender, Holloway and Kattar bit down on their respective mouthpieces at the fence, swinging wild hooks and elbows for the majority of the fourth round. Holloway settled the pace in the first of two championship rounds towards the end, taking yet another frame in this one.

Taking the final round as well in one of the best displays in his carer, Holloway took home a unanimous decision win — even landing some incredible ‘no-look’ strikes on Kattar in the final minutes of the round. With Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega slated for UFC 260 in late March — Holloway should most definitely face the victor.

Below, check out the highlights from Holloway’s blitzing of Kattar over five-rounds.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Fight Island 7: Holloway vs. Kattar results throughout the night (Sat. 16th. January 2021) from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Opening up the UFC’s 2021 schedule, former undisputed featherweight titleholder, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway makes his return to ‘Fight Island’ in his first non-title outing since 2016, as he draws the surging New England Cartel mainstay, Calvin Kattar. Title implications certainly on the line for the tonight’s main event victor.

Hoping to snap a two-fight losing run, Hawaii fan-favourite, Holloway dropped his undisputed crown to incumbent division best, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski at UFC 245 in December of 2019. Unsuccessfully prying the title back from the Aussie in the co-main event of UFC 251 in July last, Holloway dropped a razor-thin split decision loss to the City Kickboxing staple.

In a breakout year for the Methuen native, Kattar took home two victories in 2020. Featuring at UFC 249 in May, the Massachusetts striker stopped veteran knockout ace, Jeremy ‘Lil’ Heathen’ Stephens via a perfectly-timed step-in elbow before massive ground-and-pound ended the Iowa native’s night.

Headlining UFC Fight Island 1 in July, Kattar took main event honours for the second time in his Octagon stint, managing a unanimous judging victory over Holloway’s compatriot, ‘Dynamite’ Dan Ige over five-rounds in a competitive back-and-forth.

In a rescheduled pairing, veteran welterweight finishers, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ Carlos Condit and ‘The Immortal’ Matt Brown meet in an exciting matchup on paper. Recently snapping a lengthy skid, New Mexico native, Condit, a former WEC and interim UFC welterweight champion also makes his return to ‘Fight Island’ — having bested Court McGee over three-rounds via a unanimous decision.

Seen his two-fight rise snapped by uber-prospect, Miguel Baeza, perennial contender, Brown had beaten both Ben Saunder and The Ultimate Fighter 1 victor, Diego ‘The Nightmare’ Sanchez.
