Max Holloway may be eager to regain his featherweight title but he would be making a big mistake if he was looking past Calvin Kattar.

Holloway competes in his first non-title fight since 2015 when he takes on Kattar in their featherweight headliner set to take place January 16 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The Hawaiian is coming off back-to-back title fight defeats to Alexander Volkanovski though many feel he was deserving of the victory in their UFC 251 rematch in July. Because of that, some observers still view Holloway as the real champion.

As far as Kattar is concerned, his fight with Holloway is championship-caliber regardless of whether the latter is the champion or not. He just hopes Holloway is treating it the same way as he doesn’t plan on leaving it close.

“It’s a good opportunity to show that I’m that guy,” Kattar told MMA Fighting. “There’s these guys out there touting Max like he’s still the champ, and I think he may even be still focused on the champ. But to overlook me would be a mistake.

“Any time you fight a guy like Max Holloway with the accolades he has, it is a championship-caliber fight. He might not have the belt right now, but it’s that type of fight, 100 percent. It’s a five-round main event fight and the only thing missing is the belt.

“It’s all about Max Holloway and I don’t plan on leaving it close.”

Kattar has impressed many with his boxing and is also a winner of four of his last five outings. However, he still remains an underdog with many picking Holloway to come out on top.

While he isn’t predicting how the fight will go, the New England native believes his best version topples the best version of Holloway. He just has to bring that version out and let it do the rest.

“I just gotta go out there and be Calvin Kattar better than he can be Max Holloway,” Kattar added. “That will be enough; just go out there, do what I do, perform how I can. If I can do that, the rest will take care of itself.”

A win over a former champion in Holloway should all but guarantee Kattar the next crack at the featherweight title.

The move could mean the new year starts with the promotion having its first-ever event being held on ABC. This could also mark the promotion’s first live network event since UFC on Fox 31 on December 31st 2018. The UFC on Fox included 31 live events being held on the broadcasting station. This run started in November 2012 with the UFC heavyweight title bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos. Ultimately, the stint ended on December 15th, 2018 with Kevin Lee vs. Al Iaquinta 2.

How many UFC fights will air on ABC? I don’t know.

Will the whole card be shown on ABC? I don’t know.

Very little is known about the finer details of the potential move, as you can see.

UFC Fight Night on January 16th will mark the return of the promotion to Fight Island. The other two events’ headline fights are Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev and Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 2.

January 30th was set to have a UFC card, but that has allegedly been scrapped. Additionally, a large amount of the fights pencilled in for that date have been moved to other events, adding validity to the cancellation specualtions. (H/T MMA Junkie)

I can’t wait for the UFC draught to end on January 16th. If you are wondering what the next UFC event looks like, then check out the scheduled match-ups below.

An exciting featherweight fight between Max Holloway and Calvin Kattar is on the cards.

The pair are set to collide when they face each other in the headliner of the UFC’s upcoming Fight Night event taking place January 16.

The news was confirmed by the promotion on Tuesday.

For Holloway, it’s a chance to return to the win column and bounce back from his two defeats to Alexander Volkanovski.

“Blessed” lost his featherweight title to Volkanovski at UFC 245 in December. He improved in their UFC 251 rematch in July only to lose a razor-thin split decision with many observers believing he should have come out on top.

Given how the second fight went, it’s entirely possible Holloway gets a chance at a trilogy in the near future should he come out on top.

As for Kattar, this is not only his biggest opponent and challenge yet, but a chance to get the next crack at the featherweight title.

“The Boston Finisher” is coming off impressive wins over Jeremy Stephens and Dan Ige this year and has won four of his last five overall. An impressive performance and win against the former longtime champion should all but guarantee him the next title shot.

Who do you see coming out on top in this matchup?
