A prank on former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling nearly turned disastrous.

In the video clip, which you can see below, Sterling is sitting at a table, minding his business, and scrolling through his phone when another individual wearing a VR headset approaches and mistakes him for a woman.

Clearly, the ‘Funk Master’ was in no mood for shenanigans. And as expected, the comments from UFC fans on X did not disappoint.

Aljamain Sterling gearing up for his featherweight debut at UFC 300

After surrendering the bantamweight title to Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 last August, Aljamain Sterling is ready to conquer a new division. On Saturday, April 13, the ‘Funk Master’ will make his featherweight debut as a part of the promotion’s loaded UFC 300 card in Las Vegas. Welcoming Sterling to the division will be Calvin Kattar.

It will be Kattar’s first fight since suffering an injury against Arnold Allen in October 2022. ‘The Boston Finisher’ goes into the bout having lost three of his last four. Despite that, he’s still holding strong at No. 7 in the division.

Aljamain Sterling reveals 9-week drinking and hookah binges effect lungs ahead of UFC 300 return

Aljamain Sterling reveals he has been drinking regularly and has reached 180lbs.

Sterling is set to return to The Octagon as part of the UFC 300 card, this time moving up to featherweight to take on Calvin Kattar.

Fans last saw Sterling in August when he dropped his title to Sean O’Malley, ending a 2-year+ reign as champion. Sterling had said prior to this fight that he intended to move up in weight regardless of result after the weight cut had begun to take its toll.

Aljamain Sterling reveals weight gain

Being a champion can become a massive part of a fighter’s identity and when they lose it can be difficult to deal with. People deal with it in different ways.

“Right now I’m just tired. I do one to two rounds of striking, and I’m exhausted,” Sterling said. (H/T MMA Junkie

“Also (I’m) moving around and trying to do what I do when I’m lighter. Those eight to nine weeks of drinking every single day and hookah non-stop, staying up late at night, it definitely took a toll on my lungs, so I still feel like I’m battling back from and trying to gain all that.”

On top of drinking, Sterling revealed that he has also been enjoying his food, and lots of it.

“I got a sweet tooth, and even though I’m not only eating candies and chocolates, it almost feels like a bottomless pit,” Sterling continued.

“Like you can’t help yourself. You’re telling yourself to stop eating, but somehow your hands are still moving towards the fridge, your legs are still walking towards the fridge, and your fingers are dialling DoorDash and Uber Eats. Somehow you’re still ordering food when you know you don’t want anything. It’s like a sickness.”

Who wins, Aljamain Sterling or Calvin Kattar?

Aljamain Sterling is ready to conquer a new weight class.

The former UFC bantamweight world champion surrendered his 135-pound crown to current titleholder Sean O’Malley in August, forcing the ‘Funk Master’ to make a tough decision. He could either stick around at bantamweight and be inevitably forced to fight his friend and fellow contender, Merab Dvalishvili, or walk away from the division and test out his skills at 145.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Aljamain Sterling not only suggested that his rumored featherweight debut could come as early as UFC 299 in March, but he has a pretty good idea of who it could be against.

“The realistic scenario is probably myself and Calvin Kattar,” Sterling said. “He’s the only one, I think, who doesn’t have a fight; he’s been out for a bit as well. At this point, by March, I’m probably going to be out for a bit as well, so with that being said, that could be the fight.

“But a Max Holloway fight would be a nice one too. Two former champions going at it, Max doesn’t really have much to do right now unless he’s going to up to 155 pounds; that’s just speculation, but if he gets busy, or, if I should say, if he gets bored, you know Max, the best is ‘Blessed’ but you know the ‘Funk’ has something to say about that as well” (h/t Sportskeeda).

A win over Kattar Would Immediately Put Aljamain Sterling into the featherweight title picture

Aljamain Sterling has previously pushed for a fight against former featherweight champion Max Holloway, but with ‘Blessed’ eyeing a potential move to lightweight, a clash with Calvin Kattar appears to be the next best option for Sterling.

Kattar has been on the shelf since suffering a torn ACL in the opening seconds of the second round against Arnold Allen at a UFC Fight Night event in October 2022. Despite losing three of his last four inside the Octagon, ‘The Boston Finisher’ is still occupying the No. 7 spot in the featherweight rankings.

A win over Kattar could immediately thrust Aljamain Sterling into the division’s top ten and put him within reach of a fight against reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Aljamain Sterling is already moving on from his proposed clash with former featherweight titleholder Max Holloway.

Following his loss to Sean O’Malley at UFC 292, the ‘Funk Master’ appeared to be all, but ready to move on from the bantamweight division. Featherweight looks to be in his future and Sterling was hoping that a clash with Holloway would serve as his divisional debut.

Unfortunately, that no longer appears to be the case as Sterling is shifting his focus from ‘Blessed’ to another perennial contender at 145, Calvin Kattar.

“I think I got a little bit of clarity today,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “I spoke with my manager, my fiance, and we kind of went over some things and scenarios. One of the things we realized is maybe the Max fight isn’t gonna come to fruition.

“At this point, I just think he has bigger opportunities in the sense of whether or not he’s going up a weight class or the opportunity of if he were to wait to see what happens between [Ilia] Topuria and ‘Volk’ [Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 in February 2024]. It can completely open up a brand new door for him to go back to sitting on the throne.

“So, I guess you kinda gotta play chess at this point in both of our careers, and I would just imagine this fight doesn’t make a ton of sense to him right now,” he continued. “But whoever I do fight next in the 145-pound division, it might be Calvin Kattar. If you guys want to get a message out for me, respectfully.”

“I don’t know, Calvin, we could do this, see when your knee is ready to go, and much respect to you guys and your team. I think March or April would be cool. UFC 300 or maybe we could jump on that Miami card in March” (h/t MMA Mania).

Kattar has been out of action since suffering a torn ACL against Arnold Allen at UFC Vegas 63 in October 2022. The Boston Finisher’ has dropped three of his last four inside the Octagon, including losses to Max Holloway, Josh Emmett, and the aforementioned Allen.

Even so, Kattar holds the No. 7 spot in the featherweight rankings, making him a prime target for Aljamain Sterling to quickly climb into the top ten of his new weight class.

UFC featherweight contender Calvin Kattar will be watching from the sidelines until 2024

Calvin Kattar suffered a gruesome knee injury in his most bout against no. 4 ranked Arnold Allen this past October, which was his second-straight defeat, as he’d lost a close split decision to no. 5 ranked Josh Emmett earlier that summer. This marked the only the second time he’d ever been finished throughout his 30-fight career, and his first defeat coming via some form of TKO.

Kattar has also gone 1-3 in his last four outings, one might think he’d want to get back in there as soon as he possibly could. But, he doesn’t want to rush the process and come back only to reinjure himself.

Kattar recently stated the following in an interview he did with MMAJunkie:

“I think it’s possible, but I don’t want to push for it. I kind of just want to sit back. Be patient, and I feel like it’s not so much cutting off a couple of months.  (I) Just want to make sure I’m 100 percent when I get in there, and then this way I can just let it all go with reckless abandonment when I step back in there.

“I don’t want to have any second guessing stepping in there – should I have gone in too soon or not. I’ll just get that much more ready for an eventual return. I’m eyeing I believe 2024, first quarter for sure, and I’ll be ready to go with whoever they put in there with me next.

“For right now, it’s just recovery (and) getting back to being 100 percent healthy. And then eventually just taking out whoever they put in front of me next. I really don’t care who it is. (I need to) Just focus on getting back and competing at the level I know I can compete at.”

It’s hard to imagine what exactly the featherweight landscape will look like a year from now, but we’ll all be patiently awaiting his return. There isn’t an MMA fan out there that doesn’t love watching Calvin Kattar fight.
