Sean Strickland Basks in the Chaos of USA's Big Win Over Canada: 'I Love Me Some Hockey Fights'

Sean Strickland loves himself some hockey fights.

Recently, the former UFC middleweight champion took to social media to share his love for scraps on 200-foot-long slabs of ice. Strickland’s comment was also accompanied by a clip from the USA vs. Canada game on February 15 that saw the Americans score three unanswered goals to walk away with a big win at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

“I love me some hockey fights,” Strickland wrote on X.

And just to hammer home how awesome hockey fights can truly be, here are NBC Sports’ 10 greatest hockey fights of all time for no particular reason.

Sean Strickland blames Canada for his first loss to Dricus Du Plessis

Strickland may appreciate Canada’s national sport, but he’s by no means a fan of the country itself. After coming up short via a razor-close split decision against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297, ‘Tarzan’ expressed his frustration with not getting an immediate rematch and even went so far as to blame Canada (pun not intended) for not leaving Toronto with the middleweight title still strapped around his waist.

“You know I don’t care about fight politics or a belt,” Strickland posted. “But, it makes me laugh they give Izzy a rematch to Alex [Pereira] after getting slept. I lost a close decision that Dana [White] himself thought I won. Everyone did. The stats did. That needs to be run back.

“And man, I don’t want to pull this card, but when does the Champ ever lose a close fight?” he added. “When you’re in Canada with a bunch of dirty f*cking leftists.”

Unfortunately, Strickland can’t blame Canada for coming up short against ‘DDP’ once again at UFC 312. That one was all him.

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre hasn’t competed since 2013 when he vacated his 170-pound title, but he announced a few months ago that he was finally ready to return to the cage, and it seemed as if UFC 206, which is slated to take place Dec. 10 from St. Pierre’s home of Canada, was a likely landing spot.

St. Pierre, however, has since announced that he was a free agent, a claim the UFC quickly disputed, making it appear as if negotiations have hit a rough patch. UFC President Dana White has also continued to say that “Rush” doesn’t want to fight.

All signs have pointed to UFC 206 going on without the Canadian star, but perhaps there remains a glimpse of hope, as rumors have been swirling lately that a bout between GSP and reigning middleweight champ Michael Bisping could be in the works for the card.

“The Count”, who just defended his title for the first time against Dan Henderson at Oct. 8’s UFC 204, initially denied reports that he could potentially be making a quick turnaround and be fighting at UFC 206, but he took to his official Twitter account last night urging St. Pierre to ‘sign the papers’:

Bisping then said that he has already agreed to the fight:

Amongst the recent rumors that former UFC welterweight king Georges St-Pierre will be making a return to the Octagon, the Canadian legend opened up on the status of his return to his old stomping grounds at 170 pounds.

During a phone interview with MMA Fighting, ‘GSP’ revealed that ‘all the stars are aligned’ for a return to Octagon action in the near future:

“All the stars are aligned, my friend,” St-Pierre said. “I’m not lying to you, it’s not done yet. It’s not done at this point. We still have to talk to the new owners soon, see what they’ve gotta say.”

St-Pierre is currently promoting his upcoming film Kickboxer: Vengeance in which he co-stars along with Jean Claude Van Damme, Dave Bautista and Gina Carano.

‘GSP’s’ agency CAA, however, are rival talent agencies in Hollywood with new UFC owners WME-IMG, but St-Pierre believes this should not be an issue during negotiations:

“Conflict is sometimes good,” St-Pierre said. “It raises the bar. It’s a good thing. Some people might not like what I have to say, but I think it’s good.”

St-Pierre also says that he wants to get back into the Octagon now rather than later, as he feels he is still in the prime of his career at 35-years-old and doesn’t want to pass up the best years that he can get out of himself:

Georges St. Pierre“It’s something fair and we have to wait,” GSP said. “I’m very well represented. I’m very confident and trusting in the people that work for me.

I’m very well taken care of for that. I want to go back to fighting. I don’t have to. I would like to, because I feel I’m in my prime right now. I’m the best I’ve ever been at 35. Right now.

I don’t want to wait any longer, because if I wait too long I’m gonna be past that prime and I don’t want that. This is a good time to be back right now. That’s why I want to go back.”

At the end of the day the former welterweight champion says that it’s all up to the UFC in regards to his return, as he and his team have already put all of their cards out on the table:

“It depends on them,” said GSP. “We put our cards on the table, see what’s going to happen. I think my agents are talking to the new owners pretty soon. So we’re going to have some news.”

Rumor has it that St-Pierre is being targeted for the UFC 206 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on December 10, 2016. An opponent, however, has not yet been discussed.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will make his highly-anticipated Octagon return this July, when he takes on No. 8-ranked Mark Hunt in the co-main event of UFC 200.

While Hunt will be rocking an Australian themed Reebok Kit on his walk down to the Octagon, it appears Lesnar will be representing Canada despite being born and raised in Webster, South Dakota.

MMA Junkie’s Chamatkar Sandhu Tweeted out a picture of the former NCAA Division I heavyweight champion’s Reebok Kit bellow:

Despite being American born and bred, Lesnar currently resides in Mayfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he has lived for several years with his wife Rena Greek.

Lesnar (5-3) won the UFC heavyweight championship back at UFC 91 in 2008, when he defeated Randy Couture in the second round of their main event meeting. ‘The Beast’ would go on to drop the title after being obliterated by a young Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 in 2010.

Lesnar’s next bout would see him being defeated by current title challenger Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 in 2011, marking the end of his four-year MMA career. Or so we thought.

Now Lesnar prepares to go out on a better note than his last Octagon appearance, as he looks to down the Australian knockout artist this July.

Hunt and Lesnar are set to throw down in the co-main event of UFC 200 live on pay-per-view (PPV), at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 9, 2016.
