A capacity crowd of 5,000 fans packed The Coloseum at Caesars Windsor for what was the first-ever sporting event in the state-of-the-art facility, and the first mixed martial arts event televised live in the province of Ontario. The HDNet broadcast reached more than nine million homes throughout North America.

Maximum Fighting Championship welterweight champion Douglas “The Phenom” Lima showcased brilliant striking to match his impressive jiu-jitsu pedigree in retaining his world title Friday night as the MFC made a triumphant debut in Ontario with the S.L. Feldman’s presents – MFC 29: Conquer card.

Lima (18-4) needed only 1:14 to retain his title as he stunned Terry Martin (21-9) with a vicious overhand right than dropped the challenger. Lima, who fights out of Atlanta, Georgia, banged Martin twice more as referee Yves Lavigne jumped in to stop the bout. The victory also earned Lima the Knockout of the Night award – his third straight bonus following up on a pair of Submission of the Night awards in his two previous MFC outings.

“Everybody said I was a one-dimensional fighter, that all I had was jiu-jitsu. I showed them I’m a true mixed martial artist,” said Lima.

The night was particularly sweet for the entire Lima clan as Douglas’s younger brother, Dhiego (5-0), put a bow on the undercard with a third-round submission via rear-naked choke against local product Josh Taveirne (2-2). The Limas are now collectively 5-0 under the MFC banner.

It was much better news for a different Windsor, Ontario, product as hulking middleweight Ali “The Monster” Mokdad kicked off the HDNet Fights broadcast in spectacular fashion. Mokdad (4-0) blasted through highly touted prospect Andreas Spang (5-1), needing only 1:35 to earn his fourth straight win by rear-naked choke finish.

The victory, which brought a huge eruption from the home-town crowd, earned Mokdad the Submission of the Night honor.

“I think the whole crowd was there for me,” laughed Mokdad. “It was unbelievable, and then to get the Submission of the Night, that was something I never expected, but it is awesome.”

While Lima looked terrific in defending his title, it was a sluggish yet successful outing for the other defending champion on the card. Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo (15-1), just six weeks off scoring the MFC light-heavyweight title at MFC 28, defended the belt with a unanimous decision win over Zak Cummings (13-3).

Though the win wasn’t stylish, it still did extend Jimmo’s winning streak to 15, putting him right at the top of the longest current streaks in all of MMA.

Following Mokdad’s successful launch to the televised card, a pair of veterans turned in solid performance though not nearly in the manner expected considering their impressive career resumes.

Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt surprised many when he suddenly got the advantage against Demi Deeds and wound up taking the win via submission. A much more renowned striker, Spratt (22-19) did start to get the edge on Deeds (15-9) with a barrage of punches, but with Deeds down on the mat and in obvious trouble Spratt then snatched the victory with a shocking armbar at the 4:19 mark of Round 2.

On the flipside, jiu-jitsu wizard Hermes “The Unreal” Franca (21-11), who was making his MFC debut, didn’t even attempt a submission finish. Egging on opponent Robert Washington (9-3) throughout the first round, Franca then brought a wickedly sudden end to the fight with a one-punch knockout just 26 seconds into Round 2.

In one of the more hotly anticipated fights of the MFC 29 card, the debut of “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis went much longer than most insiders predicted as Curtis “The Demon” Demarce showed his stubbornly aggressive side once again.

However, Davis (18-8) got the nod in a narrow split decision, foiling another hard-fought effort from Demarce (10-9) who many felt got the raw end of a decision loss to Richie Whitson at MFC 28. Both fighters came away bruised and bloodied from the affair – Davis getting the edge with more damage done in Round 3.

Other results:

David Bo Harris def. Chuck Mady – 3:07, Round 1, submission via rear-naked choke

Matt Spisak def. Pete Brown – unanimous decision, Round 3

Ringside10Press Release – Canadian Mixed Martial Arts will reach heights unseen in years when on April 9th, 2011, Ringside MMA presents RINGSIDE 10 at the Bell Centre. Over the last few weeks, Ringside made international headlines with rumours that the organization was in contract negotiations with former UFC middleweight title challenger, Patrick The Predator Cote (13-7-0). Ringside MMA is proud to announce that Cote will be headlining this event, facing The Ultimate Fighter Season 3 semi-finalist and UFC veteran, Kalib Starnes (12-5-1). No less than 3 championship matches will be showcased, each in the featherweight, welterweight, and light-heavyweight divisions, preceding the main event.

In 2004, Patrick Cote became the 2nd Quebec native to make the jump to the UFC in 2004, and almost walked away a champion after giving the legendary Tito Ortiz almost more than he could handle. From there, Cote made his mark in the UFC, first by appearing in The Ultimate Fighter 4 The Comeback in 2006. He then went on a 4 fight win streak by disposing of Scott Smith, Kendall Grove, Drew McFedries, and Ricardo Almeida in order to earn his shot at the undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva. Following a year and a half hiatus to recuperate from an injury suffered during his title shot, Cote made his return last April but lost to Alan Belcher and then Tom Lawlor. As a free agent, Patrick Cote sifted through numerous offers, but decided that Ringside MMA would be the best place for him to begin his return to the top of the rankings. His opponent, Kalib Starnes, sees his fight against Patrick Cote as his chance for redemption. Kalib Starnes is a submission expert who wants to put the Quebec native to the test, and right in Cotes hometown no less, and prove to everyone that he is not the one to choke under pressure. The stakes are high for two of Canadas best 185 pound fighters in this matchup.

Also on the card this night, Steve The Boss Bosse (8-1-0) returns to the venue where he made his professional MMA debut. The light-heavyweight champion will be making the first defence of the Ringside belt he won in 2009, after briefly leaving to explore different challenges that had been offered to him. He responded to those challenges by defeating UFC veteran Marvin Eastman, as well as Mychal Clark, a veteran of Strikeforce and Bellator. Once a professional hockey enforcer, Bosse is now regarded as one of the best athletes in his division, but he now has to face Halifax native Roger The Hulk Hollett (11-3-0).

Chris The Menace Clements (8-4-0), who won the Ringside Welterweight title after an explosive KO over UFC veteran Jonathan Goulet last November, will be making his first title defence against undefeated Alex Garcia (6-0-0). Already a record holder for the fastest KO in MMA history (2 seconds) , Clements is feared for his extremely dangerous strikes. Meanwhile, his opponent Alex Garcia is a well-rounded highly regarded prodigy of the sport, and knows a win over Clements will earn him notice and respect on the international stage.

Several highly anticipated matches will also be on the card, including the return of the Featherweight champion Mitch Gagnon (6-1-0), who will defend his belt after a 6 month absence against the undisputed number one contender, the undefeated Rejean Groulx (5-0-0). Fans can also expect to see Mike Ricci, Derek Gauthier, Iraj Hadin and Jesse Ronson on the card, including a pioneer of female MMA in Quebec, Valerie Letourneau.

Ontario-flag-contourWith legislation last year legalizing mixed martial arts in the Province of Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services for Ontario have issued licenses for several upcoming events such as the anticipated UFC 129 event at the end of the month, and Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 29 event which happens next weekend.

There still has to be a first event though, and that went down Saturday night, April 2 at Casino Rama in Orillia. The MMA: The Reckoning featured a list of local talent, as well as a few recognizable names in UFC vet Josh Burkman, WEC vet and Canadian fighter Chris Horodecki, as well as TUF 9 alum Dean Amasinger.

A crowed of 5,000 filled the venue who were more familiar with the shows referees than they were with most of the fighters. Overseeing the nights action were veteran referee’s Yves Lavigne, “Big” John McCarthy, and Dan Miragliotta.

Burkman faced Canadian fighter Jordan Mein in the main event, losing a unanimous decision to the Albertan fighter. While Horodecki picked up a quick submission win over American David Castillo to take his first win since his dismissal from the WEC after a loss to Donald Cerrone at WEC 53. Amasinger, who was a member of the British “TUF” team on the ninth season of the reality series, was cornered by fellow alum, and UFC lightweight Ross Pearson. The Brit met Canadian Matt MacGrath losing a unanimous decision to the Halifax fighter.
