The Maximum Fighting Championship has added a showcase of light heavyweights to the card for MFC 28: Supremacy to be held Friday, February 25 on HDNet Fights.

Rodney “Sho Nuff the Master” Wallace (10-3) will square-off against “Razor” Razak Al-Hassan (11-3) in a main-card encounter. This fight could have implications on the night’s main event as well when Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo meets Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis for the MFC’s light heavyweight championship.

Wallace is fresh off a decisive three-round victory over David Heath at MFC 27 – a fight he took as a short-notice replacement but looked very solid in while making his organizational debut. Coming off that fight, the 26-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, signed a three-fight contract with the MFC which kicks off with his clash against Al-Hassan.

Al-Hassan, meanwhile, will be looking for a bit of redemption coming into the fight. In his organizational debut, which was also at MFC 27 and marked the start of a four-fight deal, Al-Hassan carried the bulk of the action but came up just short in a narrow split-decision loss to Lewis. That setback ended a four-fight winning streak for the 28-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin, product.

“This is my fight – my year. 2010 ended on a sour note for me but 2011 will bring the sweet taste of victory once again,” said Al-Hassan.

Wallace responded that he believes Al-Hassan won’t be tasting anything other than a bitter defeat.

“I know after feeling like he got robbed (against Lewis) that he is going to be hungry but I’m at the top of the food chain,” touted Wallace.

VIP, Row 1, and Row 2 tickets are available now exclusively through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024. General tickets for MFC 28: Supremacy will be on sale shortly via Ticketmaster.

News of a couple lightweight matchups surfaced on Tuesday for the upcoming UFC 129 event in Toronto. Matches between Jonathan Brookins (12-3) vs. John “The Bull” Makdessi (8-0) and Rory “The Waterboy” MacDonald (10-1) vs. James “Lightning” Wilks (7-4) were reported on Showdown.ca.

Brookins is the winner of last seasons “The Ultimate Fighter” having defeated fellow teammate Michael Johnson at the “TUF 12 Finale” in early December to win the reality show tournament. The win was Brookins fourth straight putting him at 5-1 in his last six. The loss was to the current UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo back in November of 2008 at a WEC 36 event. Aldo won a third round TKO win over Brookins.

Makdessi made his UFC debut in the same month earning a unanimous decision win over Pat Audinwood on the preliminary card of UFC 124. It was the French-Canadians eight straight victory, keeping his record perfect so far. Six of his eight wins have come via TKO while the other two have come via unanimous decision.

MacDonald is 1-1 in the UFC having lost his last bout to Carlos Condit at UFC 115 in June, a bout which earned both the “Fight of the Night” bonus. The Canadian was to have returned in November at UFC 123 against Matt Brown but an injury forced him off the card. “The Waterboy” made his UFC debut in January of last year against Mike Guymon, earning a first round submission.

His opponent, British fighter and TUF 9 welterweight winner Wilks, is 2-2 in the UFC and is coming off a loss to another Canadian Claude Patrick in last October at UFC 120, losing by unanimous decision. Wilks defeated Peter Sobotta earlier in the year at UFC 115 in June, while dropping a bout to Matt Brown at UFC 105 in November of 2009.

UFC 129 is set to take place on April 30th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The headliner for the event is expected to be a UFC welterweight title match between champ Georges St-Pierre and top challenger Jake Shields.

The Maximum Fighting Championship has officially announced its first show of 2011 – MFC 28: Supremacy, and has added a fast-paced lightweight bout to the card.

MFC 28: Supremacy will take place on Friday, February 25 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta, and will air live on HDNet Fights throughout North America at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation). The upcoming card will be the MFC’s 15th event held at The Venue at River Cree and the MFC’s 13th to be broadcast by HDNet.

Already claiming main-event status for MFC 28: Supremacy is a showdown for the MFC light heavyweight title between Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo (13-1) and Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis (13-6).

Bolstering what will be a six-fight main card is a lightweight encounter that will pit highly touted newcomer Richie “Hell Boy” Whitson (10-1), who recently signed a four-fight contract to join the MFC, against popular fireball “Ragin” Kajan Johnson (18-11-1).

“I am immensely excited to have Richie Whitson come into the MFC, and I expect his fight with Kajan Johnson to be something incredible to watch,” stated MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

Whitson, who is originally from Sitka, Alaska, and now trains in Temecula, California, hopes his organizational debut will result in a perfect belated birthday present to himself. Whitson, a former reality show competitor, turns 25 just 14 days before the bout against Johnson. He has been a bit of a globetrotter throughout his career, with fights ranging in locales from Hawaii, Hollywood, and Mexico City to his most-recent bouts which were held in Sweden and Australia.

The five-foot-nine Team Quest product has rattled off four straight wins, both by KO/TKO, and has posted five first-round victories in his career – a testament to his finish-fast approach.

“I come out swinging. I like to be aggressive and put on a good show,” said Whitson, whose only career defeat came via a contentious split-decision.

“I like to try and break people. I’m always in shape so I can keep the pressure on and break guys. The fans are going to see what I can bring. I’m never in a boring fight.”

Whitson has targeted the MFC lightweight title in his immediate future, but first he’ll have to get past Johnson, who is coming off a thoroughly dominating decision win over Ryan Healy at MFC 27 back in November. Johnson, who hails from Burns Lake, B.C., and now splits his training between Las Vegas and Vancouver, is 3-2 under the MFC/Heat XC banners with his most-notable win coming by way of a second-round TKO over Josh Russell.

Four more main-card bouts for MFC 28: Supremacy plus the undercard matchups will be revealed in the near future along with full ticket information. VIP, Row 1 and Row 2 tickets are now available by calling the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Georges St-PierreIt appears that Canadian fans will get a double dose of the three time Rogers Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year Georges St-Pierre (21-2), according to Yahoo! Sports writer Kevin Iole.

Iole is reporting that the UFC welterweight champ will defend his title to #1 contender Jake Shields (26-4-1) at the upcoming UFC 129 event in Toronto. White apparently made the announcement sometime after last nights UFC 125 event.

St-Pierre is coming off of a one sided win over “TUF 12″ opposing coach Josh Koscheck at last months UFC 124 event in Montreal. GSP won a unanimous decision over Koscheck to earn his fifth straight title defense and eight straight win. So far the French Canadian is 16-2 with the UFC.

Shields made his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 to earn the #1 contender spot, it was his fifteenth straight win. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion moved to the UFC after failed contract talks. Shields won the vacant Strikeforce title November of 2009 by defeating Jason “Mayhem” Miller and then went on to defend the belt against UFC vet Dan Henderson last April, Shields won a unanimous decision in both matches.

UFC 129 is set to take place on April 30th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. The venue could hold up to 60,000+ fans for the event, but UFC president Dana White has stated a number that he doesn’t want to cheapen the fan experience by packing the stadium. Co-headlining the event will likely be a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC champs Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida.

Georges St-Pierre Wins Third ‘Sportsnet Canadian Athlete Of The Year’ Award

For an unprecedented third year in a row, sportsnet.ca voters have overwhelmingly selected Georges St-Pierre as the Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year.

“Winning the Rogers Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year award for the third time means a lot to me,” said St-Pierre. “This year there were a lot of nominees that I really respect, so I am honored that the fans chose me. Thanks to all my fans for their support.”

Readers voted on sportsnet.ca in a bracket-style tournament through four head-to-head rounds over the course of 16 days to determine the winner. Voters chose amongst 15 other Canadians including Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby, NL MVP Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash, Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews and gold medal winners from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games including Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Alex Bilodeau and Maelle Ricker.

St-Pierre, the reigning UFC welterweight champion, went 2-0 in defending his title over Dan Hardy and Josh Koscheck in 2010. St-Pierre’s win earlier this month catapulted him into the spotlight with his five-round decision over Koscheck at UFC 124 in Montreal.

“The format of the voting process was changed over previous years and GSP had the most difficult path to winning, but it didn’t matter, he was still able to win,” said Nelson Millman, Executive Producer, Rogers Sportsnet. “Dana White claims GSP is now more popular world wide than Wayne Gretzky, and once again MMA fans showed their passion and loyalty to one of their champions.”

St-Pierre beat out Olympic gold-winning snowboarder Ricker in the opening round before facing Votto, who also won this year’s Lou Marsh Award as the top Canadian athlete.

The 29-year-old mixed martial artist from Saint-Isidore, Quebec, went on to beat out first-time Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Toews, who was also named Best Forward at this year’s Men’s Olympic Hockey tournament en route to helping Canada take gold in Vancouver.

The win over Toews set-up a head-to-head against Crosby in the final round. Crosby delivered the most memorable moment in 2010 for Canadian sports fans – scoring the overtime winner over the U.S. to secure the gold medal in Men’s hockey for Canada at the Olympic Winter Games.

With his repeat victory last year, St-Pierre has joined Steve Nash as the only back-to-back winners of the Sportsnet award. Nash took the title back in 2005 and 2006. St-Pierre is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world and holds a professional record of 21-2.

Tom WrightThe Ultimate Fighting Championship is looking to make the recently announced Toronto event the biggest in mixed martial arts history according to Tom Wright, head of operations for the promotion in Canada.

Wright hopes to smash attendance records with UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre, noting that although the venue could hold up to 68,000 fans the are planning anywhere from 25,000 – 40,000 in order not to “compromise the fan experience.”

Although no bouts have been discussed for the event, Wright hoped to see two UFC titles on the line for the show.

With UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre’s recent win and 28 day medical suspension, there is plenty of time for the French-Canadian to prepare for his next title defense against Jake Shields at the event. Also a date for the UFC heavyweight title defense is still up in the air as current champ Cain Velasquez is set to face Junior dos Santos with no known timeframe for their bout.

“We’ve talked about the 30,000 to 40,000 range. Whatever it is, we’re going to set a record here in terms of turnstile attendance,” said Wright. “I can tell you it will be north of 25,000 and probably south of 40,000…The fact of the matter is (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva does a great job. (UFC president Dana White) and (CEO Lorenzo Fertitta) know their stuff. It’s going to be a great card. What I’m lobbying for, I’d like to see two championships, a UFC 100 type of card.”
