MFC Watson Knock Out of the Year
Putting a wrap on the Maximum Fighting Championship’s schedule for 2010 is the annual look back at the best of the best.

The Top 10 Submission and Knockouts of the Year are ready to be handed out, honoring a long list of top-quality fighters and scintillating results from both the MFC and Heat XC.

It’s now time for the Knockouts of the Year. Nominees over the last couple years have included Marvin Eastman, Dwayne Lewis, and Josh Bryant, while the past two years saw Aron Lofton and Pete Spratt take the No. 1 spot.

So here are the MFC’s Top 10 Knockouts of 2010:

10. Pete Spratt def. Luigi Fioravanti, MFC 25: Vindication – Two solid veterans worked their way through two tough rounds of action, and while Spratt was likely ahead on all cards, the decision was still up for grabs. But as Fioravanti faded Spratt came on and found a quick burst to end the bout. Sharp and precise shots – chin and body – brought it all to an end at 4:02 of the third round, and earned the Knockout of the Night award.

9. Yves Edwards def. Derrick Noble, MFC 24: Heat XC – “The Texas Gunslinger” took out his six-shooters and put a hole through Noble in lightning-quick fashion. Once Edwards had Noble pinned into a corner it was lights out with a fast and furious combination followed by a barrage of rights. Edwards was so pumped with win he bolted from the ring to find his wife in the front row. It was all over at 4:44 of Round 1.

8. Dwayne Lewis def. Mike Nickels, MFC 26: Retribution – A former Fight of the Year winner, Nickels should have ready for the heavy hands of Lewis. But Nickels’ come-forward style left himself wide open by Lewis who popped through a series of uppercuts that twice floored Nickels. Lewis followed the second knockdown with vicious ground-and-pound that capped off a tidy victory for the popular figure only 1:30 into the fight. Lewis took home the Knockout of the Night award.

7. Dhiego Lima def. Bill Fraser, MFC 27: Breaking Point – Lima showed few nerves in his fight big fight, one that was also the opening bout on TV and would be followed later in the night by his brother’s title shot. Lima kept Fraser at distance with a stiff jab and then timed a perfect straight right for the one-punch knockout at 2:36 of the second round. Lima also picked up the Knockout of the Night bonus (later in the night, his brother Douglas went on to win the MFC welterweight title and Submission of the Night award).

6. Keto Allen def. Jason Gorny, Heat XC 5: Punishment – Knockouts by punches and kicks are certainly impressive, but Allen’s KO was something special. The powerfully built welterweight set it all up by crushing Gorny with a pair of belly-to-back suplexes, the second of which dropped him completely on the back of head and also separated his shoulder. Allen rolled from the second suplex into ferocious grond-and-pound but it was all over before those hammerfists even landed – a mere 1:16 into the fight.

5. Jesse Juarez def. Nathan Gunn, MFC 24: Heat XC – Gunn was built up as the more potent striker while Juarez was well-regarded for his wrestling. But in a flash, the whole scenario reversed. Juarez spotted Gunn leaning in as he approached and he fired off a kick that caught Gunn flush on the side of head. Gunn was face down with the lights turned out just 11 seconds into Round 1.

4. Jason High def. Keto Allen, Heat XC 6: Bragging Rights – With Allen still riding the wave of his last victory, this was expected to be a thrilling clash. The more-experienced High didn’t waste any time going on the offensive, exploding all over Allen in the middle of the ring with a lethal combination. High scored right on the chin and dropped Allen, finishing the fight at just 2:08 of Round 1.

3. Antonio McKee def. Luciano Azevedo, MFC 26: Retribution – McKee threatened to quit if the Brazilian could hang five rounds with him in this lightweight title fight. McKee made sure he wouldn’t have to hang up his gloves, first taking Azevedo down with a thunderous slam. A first elbow strike rattled Azevedo and opened a bad cut. A second elbow split the challenger wide open, blood gushing, and a half-conscious Azevedo waving submission at 3:11 of Round 1. It was the most vicious victory in McKee’s impressive career.

2. David Heath def. Solomon Hutcherson, MFC 26: Retribution – Hutcherson had control early even though he was cut on the bridge of the nose. But in Round 2, Heath decided to get creative. He opened the round, and nearly ended the fight, with a perfectly timed spinning backfist that wobbled Hutcherson. But Hutcherson hung in there … though only momentarily. Heath set up the end with a dynamic Superman punch in the middle of the ring, dropping Hutcherson flat on his back. Heath followed and put Hutcherson out with hammerfists, drawing a standing ovation at 3:46 of Round 2.

And the MFC’s 2010 Knockout of the Year goes to …

1.Tom Watson def. Travis Galbraith, MFC 24: Heat XC – Watson’s credentials were that of an impressive striker who loved to finish his fights in style. He did just that against Galbraith. Off a break, Watson put his Muay Thai kickboxing skills on display, firing a head kick at Galbraith that landed point-blank in the side of the chin. Galbraith never saw it coming and landed face down on the mat – stunned, shocked and blown away by the atomic bomb that had struck him. A clear-cut Knockout of the Night winner at 1:56 of Round 1 … and the best of “big kiboshes” this year.

Why The MMA News Contributor Jake Daniels Is Picking GSP Over Koscheck

Referencing Wikipedia is apparently the “in” thing, so I’ll get that out of the way right off the top. “Wikipedia.” There. Two votes for Daniels.

I used the popular edited-by-anyone-with-a-keyboard-so-prone-to-error website to find a song about going to Montreal – because I wish I was. Unfortunately a lack of travel/salary/lunch budget on the part of my bosses (sic) here at themmanews.com combined with previous commitments will not allow going to La Belle province to hopefully see George St-Pierre beat the actual snot out of Josh Koscheck.

Other than my penchant for seeing St-Pierre and Brock Lesnar win, most nights in the Octagon © I just want to see good fights. Providing the men in the ring are respectful to one another, and keep it within the rules, it generally doesn’t matter to me who gets his hand raised and belly button pointed at by the referee. I rarely pick winners any better than the friends I gamble on the fights with – which is the beauty of MMA.

Having never met either one of the men personally, all I can garner about the personalities of Saturday’s main event combatants is from what I see in interviews, and on TUF. St-Pierre could be a real dick for all we really know – but he comes off as smart, savvy, and charmingly French-Canadian. Koscheck, who will be booed relentlessly at the Bell center this weekend, might be the greatest buddy ever helped you drywall the basement – and bring beer.

What I AM sure of, are a few things; as a GSP fan and proud Canadian I never want to see his face mashed up and bloodied again. I want him to retire on top – whenever he feels the time is right – never having to taste his own blood while watching Dana White present his title belt to another man. I definitely do NOT want Koscheck to be that man.

Koscheck for some reason got under my skin the first time I saw him fight. He reminds me of every bully that ever bullied anyone, anywhere. His hair annoys me. His eyes annoy me. His constant 3-day growth annoys me. His nose… Don’t get me started on his nose.

“The Koss”, as he likes to call himself, also got his ass out-coached and out-classed on TUF by St-Pierre. Both guys who made it to the finale were in GSP’s camp on the show – and Jonathan Brookins and Michael Johnson each demonstrated talent, courage and honor in giving MMA fans a great 3-rounds. (Secretly I was cheering a little more for Brookins, just because he’s such a hippie)

For those reasons – and I may be blowing a shot at getting some home remodeling help here – I just want to see Koscheck’s nose relocated to where his ear used to be.

Oh and for the record, the song I was looking for would either be “Demain matin Montréal m’attend” (“Tomorrow morning Montreal awaits me”) by Michel Tremblay and François Dompierre, or “Je reviendrai à Montréal” (“I will come to Montreal”) by Robert Charlebois. Also Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, Bran Van 3000 and a number of others have songs called “Montreal”… Wikipedia has everything…

Edmonton, Alberta (Canada): The Fight Club (TFC) is proud to bring MMA fans “DEVASTATION” on Friday, December 10th, live from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The event will showcase ten bouts featuring several top MMA superstars, including former TFC World Light Heavyweight Champion Victor Valimaki, top TFC middleweight contenders Bastien Huveneers and Nick Hinchliffe, as well as welterweight contenders Louis Carles and Rio Wells.

Tickets for “DEVASTATION” are available through Ticketmaster, or via phone at (780) 991-5670.

The main event will feature a title fight between Vancouver resident Bastien Huveneers (8-3-1) and Nick Hinchliffe (17-6), who hails from Nanaimo, BC. This scrap will be for the vacant TFC Canadian Middleweight title. The former main event, which was to feature Craig “Farmer” Brown (7-3) versus Chase Degenhardt (6-1), fell apart due to an injury to Degenhardt. Following the withdrawal of his opponent, Brown declined a chance at redemption against Hinchliffe, choosing instead to focus on his upcoming January clash in TFC with UFC veteran Jason “Dooms” Day (19-11).

Nick Hinchliffe is currently riding high with losses only to fellow Canadian MMA stars in current UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald (10-1), and current Armageddon FC Middleweight Champion Kalib Starnes (11-5). Hinchliffe is still pursuing a slot on Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter 13, but in the mean time, the Team Impact product will undoubtedly remain as active as possible. His appearance at “DEVASTATION” will mark Nick’s sixth fight of 2010.

“Hinchcliffe and now Huveneers are both top level Canadian middleweights and we would be proud to have either as our Canadian champ,” said TFC president Mark Sinclair. “There will certainly be several strong challengers in line for our new champ’s future title defenses.”

The co-main event will showcase Edmonton, Alberta native and local favorite Victor “The Matrix” Valimaki (16-7), a former holder of the TFC Light Heavyweight Championship, as he collides with the well-traveled and experienced Minneapolis, Minnesota native Karl Knothe (17-6). A former UFC fighter, Valimaki was riding a seven-fight winning streak until running into the man who took his belt, the current champ, Martin “The Stress” Desilets. Now, he’ll face Knothe, while hoping that a win will get him back one the championship path. “The Matrix” holds victories over MMA legend Dan “The Beast” Severn and UFC veterans Vernon “Tiger” White, and Jason “Dooms” Day. Knothe, for his part, trains with Sergio Cunha at The Minnesota Fight Factory in Burnside, Minnesota, and has won eleven straight fights since August 2007.

Also fighting at “DEVASTATION” will be knockout specialist Rio Wells, who will put his skills on display yet again as he looks to take the next step in his career. A three-time TFC vet, Wells has yet to taste defeat, knocking out all four of his pro opponents.

The fight card includes:

· 185 lbs: Bastien Huveneers (8-3-1) vs. Nick Hinchliffe (17-6) for the CND MW. Title
· 205 lbs: Victor Valimaki (16-8) vs. Karl Knothe (17-6)
· 170 lbs: Rio Wells (4-0) vs. Louis Carles (7-2)
· 155 lbs: Steve Beaumont (1-0) vs. Eric Andre (2-0)
· 200 lbs: Donald Willis (0-0) vs. Brendan Kornberger (2-0)
· 185 lbs: Sheldon Westcott (5-1) vs. TBA
· 190 lbs: Jesse Clarke (2-2) vs. Ryan Sieben (0-2)
· 155 lbs: Dia Grant (2-3) vs. Alex Ricci (0-0)
· 170 lbs: Mike Scarcello (1-0) vs. Brandon Dumais (0-0)

TORONTO TO HOST HISTORIC FIRST-EVER ONTARIO EVENT AS THE UFC® HITS THE ROGERS CENTRE APRIL 30, 2011. UFC® FAN EXPO ALSO SCHEDULED TO TAKE OVER TORONTO APRIL 29-30

TORONTO, Ont. (Canada) – UFC® President Dana White has said time and time again that the UFC loves Canada, and that Canadians are among the best and most passionate UFC fans in the world.

Today, in recognition of this great Canadian passion, White and UFC Director of Canadian Operations Tom Wright, made the highly anticipated announcement that the Ultimate Fighting Championship® will host its first-ever event in Ontario as the UFC visits Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The UFC also announced it will host a two-day Fan Expo at the Direct Energy Centre on April 29 and 30, rounding out what promises to be an historic and record-setting event.

“Canadians have repeatedly shown how much they love the UFC,” said White. “Fans in Ontario have patiently waited and it will pay off as this one will go down in the history books come April 30. I’m very excited – Toronto is going to break the record and host the biggest mixed martial arts event ever in North America.”

“This announcement has been a long time coming and we’re thrilled,” said Wright. “Ontario is obviously a key market as Toronto is one of THE MMA cities in the world,” he added. “We’re very thankful to Premier Dalton McGuinty, Ministers Sophia Aggelonitis and John Gerretsen and the provincial government for their support in sanctioning and regulating the sport.”

The Rogers Centre event will represent Canada’s sixth UFC global Pay-Per-View event following UFC 124 in Montreal on Dec. 11, 2010. Montreal has also hosted three other events (UFC 83, 97 and 113) since April 2008 while Vancouver hosted UFC 115 in June 2010.
