No.1 pound-for-pound boxer, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez doesn’t seem all that interested in boxing the UFC’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter, Kamaru Usman, at least for the time being.

Although he didn’t completely rule out the possibility, the current IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO, and Ring Super-Middleweight Champion doesn’t seem set on facing the UFC Welterweight Champion anytime soon.

This isn’t the first time a championship-caliber MMA fighter wanted to test their skills in the boxing ring against one of boxing’s greatest. In 2017, then UFC Champion, Connor McGregor challenged Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, in what turned into the second-highest selling Pay-Per-View in combat sports history.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has been adamant in his campaign for a boxing match against Alvarez in recent months, although Dana White and the UFC have not taken steps to join him in the promotion of a super fight. He has constantly called out the superstar boxer in interviews, press conferences, and through social media.

“In 2022, I’m gonna shock the world. July, International Fight Week, I’m gonna fight Leon Edwards. God willing I get through Leon Edwards, September, Mexican Independence Day, I will stop Canelo Alvarez,” Usman said (Via TMZ Sports).

Could Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Alvarez Be the Fight to Make?

Kamaru Usman, who is currently healing from hand ligament surgery at the moment, is set to face off against Leon Edwards in July, while Alvarez will challenge Dmitry Bivol for his Light Heavyweight title on May 7.

Canelo Alvarez sat down with TMZ to speak on his ideas about the possible matchup with Usman.

“Never say no, but right now it’s not in my future. Not right now. Yeah, it’s all about legacy right now, but you never know.” (Via MMAJunkie).

Never have we seen the two very best in their respective sports face off against one another for ultimate glory and bragging rights in their athletic primes.  Although it doesn’t seem likely at the moment, there is no denying a matchup of this caliber would send shockwaves throughout combat sports.

Joe Rogan wants UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman to get his shot against boxing world champion Canelo Álvarez.

Usman, the UFC’s top-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, has flirted with the idea of a crossover fight with Álvarez for several months now. Despite some questioning whether or not Usman was serious about his desires, he continues to tease the fight taking place eventually.

Álvarez’s team has responded to Usman’s callout with some mutual interest, but right now Canelo is focused on his May 7 fight against Dmitry Bivol. Canelo has won 15 fights since his first career loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

During a recent interview, Rogan made the case for a Usman vs. Álvarez super fight.

“I would like to see him fight Canelo, I really would,” Rogan said of Usman on the Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson podcast. “Not because I think that he’s a favorite in a boxing match against one of the greatest boxers of all-time, but I want to see him get a giant payday. The same way I would like to see [Francis] Ngannou fight Tyson Fury. That’s a way you can make a s***-load of money, and I don’t think it damages his potential as a UFC fighter. I think it would be invaluable experience for him, as a champion, if he did have that fight and then came back over to MMA. I think he’d probably be even better as a striker if he gets through it relatively undamaged, even if he loses.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Usman doesn’t have any professional boxing fights on his record but has shown a vastly improved standup game since earning the welterweight title. He has earned knockouts over the likes of Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal, and Covington during his title reign.

One huge roadblock is Usman’s contract with the UFC, with president Dana White appearing uninterested in letting the 170lb champion bypass his contract for a fight with Álvarez. If Usman wants his wish granted, he’ll likely have to convince White and the UFC brass to allow him to pursue the opportunity.

It ended up being the biggest pay-per-view ever. Something could come along but the whole Boxing vs MMA thing is silly.” (Transcribed by BoxingScene)

Skyrocketing welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev took to Twitter to show his displeasure with 170lb champion Kamaru Usman’s claims that he would KO the pound for pound best boxer on the planet in Canelo Alvarez.

The UFC’s pound-for-pound No.1 Usman is pushing for a fight with undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez in September, something that seems unlikely to happen due to Usman’s contract with the UFC and Canelo’s desire to cement his legacy in boxing before taking novelty fights.

Usman wants to defend his welterweight title against Leon Edwards in the summer and cross over to boxing to face Alvarez on Mexican Independence day.

Usman’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz seems to think the champ could knock out Alvarez in 3 rounds.

While most fans and pundits believe this fight may not even be close, Usman and his team believe it could one of the bigger fights the world can showcase.

“He’s walking around saying payday, payday – absolutely. It’s the biggest payday you are ever gonna make,” Usman said.

“I understand that he gets paid, he makes money. But fighting me is the biggest payday he’s ever gonna make. We talking nine figures, for sure.”

“Absolutely I see myself winning that fight. That’s the thing that a lot of people fail to realize. A lot of people, because they think they can’t do something, they try to put that upon you. ‘Oh, you can’t do that. It can’t be done.’”

It’s hard to imagine Dana White letting his pound-for-pound champion step inside the boxing ring with Canelo Alvarez, but in this sport, you can never say never.
