UFC Welterweight Champ Kamaru Usman isn’t losing hope on a Canelo Alvarez fight, despite UFC president Dana White recently playing it down.

Usman capped off his rivalry with welterweight contender Colby Covington by beating him at UFC 268 in a unanimous decision victory. Covington had his moments during the fight, but Usman was able to limit the damage and sustain his output throughout five back-and-forth rounds.

After the win, reporters asked UFC president Dana White about Usman’s comments about a potential boxing match with Alvarez. White helped cross-promote the infamous Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match in 2017.

However, White shut down the notion that an Alvarez boxing match could be in Usman’s future, stating that Usman doesn’t really want any part of Canelo. When told about White’s remarks, here is how Usman responded.

“Dana doesn’t know. Like I said, I want something that scares me,” Usman said during the UFC 268 post-fight presser. “If I’m gonna leave my daughter for another 12 weeks or more, it’s gotta be something that gets me up. I want to challenge myself. I know a lot of people are gonna talk down, or say a lot of bullshit, or say this, ‘Aw, yeah, you don’t want this. You don’t want that.’ Yeah, don’t get me wrong. He’s a master at what he does.’ I love it, and I respect it, which is why I wanna challenge myself in that way. The last time I was an underdog, we saw what happened.”

“So it is what it is.” Usman continued. “We’re the ones who are willing to go over there and take that risk. They won’t dare come over here and take that risk.”

Usman first hinted at a potential boxing match with Alvarez during the buildup to UFC 268, and more specifically his recent interview with ESPN’s Max Kellerman. Usman and Alvarez went head-to-head with their pay-per-views beginning and ending at roughly the same time.

Despite his impressive win over Covington, Usman wasn’t worried about beating Alvarez to the punch by getting a finish before he did.

“Does it bother me? No, because I didn’t know he got the finish,” Usman said. “If I knew he got the finish beforehand, then shit, I would’ve got that finish, too! It’s about being calculated and technical, and I did that tonight.”

Usman is thought by many fans to be one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time and is in the conversation for the greatest welterweight of all time alongside former champion Georges St-Pierre.

Usman doesn’t have any boxing fights on his record, but that could change for a money fight with Alvarez, in a showdown of two of the best combat sports athletes in the world.

Do you think we’ll ever see a Kamaru Usman vs. Canelo Alvarez fight?

Dana White Bet Six Figures On Canelo Alvarez KO

Dana White Canelo

Dana White was caught in 4k watching Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant in the middle of UFC 268, but now we know why.

White has had a ton of respect for Canelo, and the skills that he possesses. So much so in fact, that when UFC welterweight champ said that he wanted to box Canelo ahead of his title fight with Colby Covington at UFC 268, the UFC President said that there was essentially no way his guy was taking on the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world.

It seems that White had so much faith in Canelo’s ability to beat Plant that he was willing to put his money where his mouth is, and a lot of it. According to a betting slip that he posted to his Instagram Stories, before being re-uploaded to Twitter by Damon Martin, White made a massive bet to the tune of $100,000 on the champ to win by knockout, which he was able to do in the 11th round, netting White a profit of $41,666.

This explains why Dana White was seen watching the Canelo Alvarez fight on his screen, while sitting cage side at UFC 268, as Rose Namajunas vs Weili Zhang went down in front of him. While this six figure amount does not mean the same to the UFC President as it would for most people, that is still not a small amount to gamble on.

In any case, White makes a good point when he says that it would not make the most sense for Kamaru Usman to try fighting Canelo Alvarez in his next. While that payday would be huge for the welterweight champ, Canelo proved with his win over Caleb Plant, that his boxing technique, speed, and power are unmatched in the world of boxing, as it stands today.

Dana White has no interest whatsoever in putting together a superfight between Kamaru Usman and Canelo Alvarez.

Yesterday, the stars seemed to align perfectly for the groundwork to be laid out for an Usman vs. Canelo crossover fight if it were ever going to happen. Though the idea was always a long shot, the fact that both fighters were competing on the same night was some serendipitous booking and theoretically gave all parties a place to start.

However, before anything could get started, Dana White emphatically shot down the idea of the P4P vs. P4P superfight Usman had been lobbying for all week and even as far back as several weeks ago.

“I watched the Canelo fight tonight. He don’t want to fight Canelo,” White said with fatigue. “He don’t want to fight Canelo. Come on, man. Let’s stop this shit. If Canelo wants to come over here, let’s do it. He don’t want to box Canelo.”

Canelo was victorious in his bout over Caleb Plant last night via 11th-round TKO to become the first-ever four-belt champion at 168 pounds. Meanwhile, Usman again defeated his toughest rival, Colby Covington, at UFC 268 in another closely contested battle.

Usman did not call out Canelo after the fight, which now appears to have been a better conservation of time than daylight savings. So with Alvarez and White both showing no public signs of interest in the fight taking place, it looks like Usman will have to settle for continuing to reign over UFC welterweights with an iron fist until someone in his own sport can do something about it.

Dana White is not interested in seeing Kamaru Usman box Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

On Saturday, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ defended his welterweight strap with a hard-fought decision win over Colby Covington in the UFC 268 main event.

A little earlier, Canelo scored an 11th round TKO win over Caleb Plant to become the undisputed champion at super-middleweight, the first fighter from Mexico to ever achieve this feat.

In the build-up to their respective fights, Usman and Canelo had commented on a potential crossover fight with the UFC champion appearing keener than the biggest star in boxing.

At the UFC 268 post-fight press conference, White insisted that a fight between Usman and Canelo would not be happening.

“I watched the Canelo fight tonight,” White said. “He don’t want to fight Canelo, he don’t want to fight Canelo. Come on, man. Let’s stop this sh*t. If Canelo wants to come over here, awesome fight. Those two put on an incredible performance (tonight).” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Kamaru Usman Has Talked Up His Chance Against Canelo

In July, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ talked up his chances in a boxing match with the pound-for-pound best, he said.

“I think I can do anything that I put my mind to. I don’t disrespect Canelo. I think Canelo is one of the best, one of the greatest of this generation and I do not disrespect him at all. I respect his skills and I think he’s a phenomenal champion. But I also know whatever I put I mind to, I go out there and I get it. So if it’s in the cards in the future, maybe we’ll dance, we’ll see.”

Ahead of his welterweight title rematch with Colby CovingtonUsman explained why he has a desire to box Canelo.

“To be honest with you, I’ll tell you what will really get the people going, Usman said. “When have you ever seen two pound-for-pound fighters in the world in their respective sports go at it? Who’s the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world right now? It’s not about money, it’s about what gets me out of bed, what gets me scared! I want the chance. I want (to fight Canelo)”.

Canelo is of the opinion that Usman is simply chasing a “payday” and has done little to suggest he would be interested in the crossover fight. Now, White has completely shut the idea down so it seems like Usman will need to concentrate on defending his 170lb UFC belt.

Do you agree with Dana White? Does a fight between Kamaru Usman and Canelo make no sense?
