Carlos Condit understands why Tyron Woodley receives criticism.

Woodley is the reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title holder, but he’s perhaps the most criticized champion in the promotion. “The Chosen One” has beaten the likes of Robbie Lawler, Stephen Thompson, Demian Maia, and even Condit.

With that said, his most recent title defenses haven’t been exciting. In fact, he’s been booed heavily his last two defenses. During a recent appearance on MMAFighting.com‘s “The MMA Hour,” Condit said Woodley’s critics have a point:

“I can definitely see where the critics are coming from. We’re athletes but we’re also entertainers, people by the pay-per-view to be entertained. That’s part of this. This is show business. I know that winning is super important and a game plan is super important, but at some point you have to, this is the hurt business and you gotta to try to put your opponent out.”

“The Natural Born Killer” said that despite Woodley’s abilities, the champion doesn’t fight to finish.

“You know he’s obviously a super, super talented dude. I did watch the last fight against Maia. I felt like he at a time where he could he really could have turned it on and tried to finish, he didn’t.”

Carlos Condit Believes Tyron Woodley Could Turn It On, But Doesn’t

After successfully defending his title against grappling guru Demian Maia at UFC 214 this past July, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley received quite a bit of criticism, including from UFC President Dana White, due to many feeling the fight was boring.

Former Woodley foe and former interim 170-pound champion Carlos Condit, who will make his return against Neil Magny at UFC 219 on Dec. 30, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, recently said that he can see where Woodley’s critics are coming from:

“I can definitely see where the critics are coming from,” Condit said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “We’re athletes but we’re also entertainers, people buy the pay-per-view to be entertained. That’s part of this. This is show business. I know that winning is super important and a gameplan is super important, but at some point you have to, this is the hurt business and you gotta to try to put your opponent out.”

Condit, who’s known for being an exciting fighter and a finisher, feels as if Woodley could’ve ‘turned it on’ against Maia and went for the finish:

“You know he’s obviously a super, super talented dude,” Condit said. “I did watch the last fight against Maia. I felt like he at a time where he could he really could have turned it on and tried to finish, he didn’t.”

Condit, who could very well still be one of the best welterweights in the world, hasn’t competed since being submitted by Maia in August 2016. He’s lost two of his last three as well, with one of those losses coming via injury to Woodley.

While a rematch between him and Woodley could certainly take place in the future, “The Natural Born Killer” seems to be taking his return to the Octagon slowly:

“I don’t I don’t really think about it all that much. I’m really looking at small, incremental things right now. That’s big picture, but for now it’s really just getting back in fight shape, getting firing on all cylinders, getting my weapons sharp again, that’s my thought process and my priority,” Condit said.

Do you expect Condit to make another return?

Former interim UFC and WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit is finally set for his awaited UFC return.

No. 7-ranked Condit has been out of action since his shockingly quick submission loss to Demian Maia in August 2016, and hardcore fans of mixed martial arts (MMA) have been anticipating the action-based contender’s potential return ever since.

Days after he tweeted UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby to ask for a bout, UFC Canada tweeted tonight that the longtime veteran would be returning at December 30’s UFC 219 from Las Vegas, Nevada, against No. 10 Neil Magny:

In hindsight, the Maia loss is tough to discredit “The Natural Born Killer” for considering the absolute war against Robbie Lawler he came off of in January of that year.

Prior to that, Condit finished former title challenger Thiago Alves to earn his title shot against “Ruthless.”

Magny was most recently seen losing a one-sided bout to former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, who appears more than reinvented at 170 pounds, at September 9’s UFC 215 from Edmonton.

Both Top 10-ranked contenders have lost a bit of their once-held momentum in recent years, making their UFC 219 affair a pivotal bout for both athletes. But if the fight is anything like “The Natural Born Killer’s” usual match-ups, fans are going to have much to look forward in Condit’s return.

Carlos Condit is ready to return to mixed martial arts (MMA) action.

Condit has been competing in the sport since 2002 and has picked up notable wins over the likes of Jake Ellenberger, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy, Nick Diaz, and Thiago Alves. He has also shared the Octagon with Demian Maia, Georges St-Pierre, Tyron Woodley, and Johny Hendricks. His last appearance inside the cage saw him suffer a first round submission loss to Maia, which he began contemplating retirement after.

That fight was over a year ago in April of 2016, however, “The Natural Born Killer” took to Twitter earlier today (Tues. September 19, 2017) to send a tweet to Sean Shelby, claiming he is looking to return to fighting come December or January:

There are plenty of contenders in the UFC’s 170-pound division for Condit to square up with, such as Rafael dos Anjos, Neil Magny, or even Santiago Ponzinibbio who comes off a huge first round knockout win over Gunnar Nelson. Do you think we’ll see Condit back in the age by the end of the year? Who would you like to see him fight? Let us know in the comments!
