The first fights are in for next March’s UFC Fight Night in London, and one includes the return of former light heavyweight champion Jan B?achowicz.

After staging its United Kingdom event in Manchester this past July, mixed martial arts’ leading promotion will head back to England’s capital in the first quarter of 2025, with London’s O2 arena once again playing host to Octagon action.

A main event is yet to be announced, and a number of home favorites are expected to make the walk in front of their compatriots. The first major announcement, however, will pit a Polish ex-titleholder against a charging New Zealander.

The UFC announced this week that B?achowicz’s (29-10-1) lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury will come to a close 20 months on from his most recent appearance — a narrow decision loss to Alex Pereira at UFC 291.

On March 22, the #4-ranked contender will attempt to defend his position in the top five opposite the surging Carlos Ulberg (11-1). That fight was announced alongside another, with English heavyweight Mick Parkin set for a big opportunity against a veteran of the top 10 in Marcin Tybura on home soil.

Prior to his tight loss to then-future and now-reigning light heavyweight champion Pereira, B?achowicz failed to regain the 205-pound gold against Magomed Ankalaev, whom he fought to a draw against in the main event of UFC 282.

Ulberg, meanwhile, hasn’t tasted defeat since a UFC debut defeat to Kennedy Nzechukwu in 2021. Since then, “Black Jag” has won six fights consecutively, most recently outpointing former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir at UFC Macau late last month.

Following his latest triumph, UFC light heavyweight Carlos Ulberg is looking to take the next step toward the title.

Ulberg kept his ball rolling in the 205-pound division at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Macau, China, where he got the better of a former title challenger and longtime top-10 contender in Volkan Oezdemir.

The City Kickboxing standout put in the kind of polished and technical display that he’s become synonymous with since falling on the wrong side of a wild brawl with Kennedy Nzechukwu back in 2021.

That marked Ulberg’s last loss, with the New Zealander winning all seven of his fights since. And having likely strengthened his position close to title contention with his performance at the Galaxy Arena, “Black Jag” has a plan to earn a first shot.

“Obviously Khalil had that opportunity last time, so I think for the next step, my next step would be up against a guy like Khalil Rountree,” Ulberg told the UFC’s Maddyn Johnstone-Thomas.

Rountree had a surprise opportunity to achieve champ status last month in Salt Lake City, where he challenged Alex Pereira in the main event of UFC 307.

“The War Horse” put in a valiant effort opposite the former middleweight and reigning light heavyweight kingpin, winning the first two rounds before falling victim to a comeback and the famed power shots of “Poatan” in the fourth stanza.

Having gotten past the #8-ranked Oezdemir, Ulberg wants a crack at the #6 man in the division next year as he looks to become the latest title challenger to emerge from Auckland’s City Kickboxing camp.

Carlos Ulberg’s climb up the UFC light heavyweight rankings continues on following possibly the biggest win of his career thus far at UFC Macau, where he took a decision over former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir.

Though neither man was able to get the knockout blow, both threw with pressure and power over the course of 15 minutes. Plenty of punching from the pair in the first round saw Oezdemir try to bring the pressure, but “Black Jag” landed the stronger strikes and a number of counter-shots on his Swiss opponent.

Oezdemir looked to continue his pace heading into the second round, attempting to take solid control of the fight. Ulberg had other plans, however, and paced himself while methodically piecing “No Time” up.

Ulberg ultimately took all three judges’ scorecards with two 30-27s and one 29-28.

Oezdemir, meanwhile, has now lost two of his last four and four of his last seven.

Carlos Ulberg Comments On The Recent Success Of Kickboxers In MMA: ‘It’s A Universal Language’

City Kickboxing’s Carlos Ulberg looks to earn his seventh win in a row inside the Octagon this weekend when he returns in Macau to face former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. City Kickboxing’s Carlos Ulberg looks to earn his seventh win in a row inside the Octagon this weekend when he returns in Macau to face former title challenger Volkan Oezdemir. The #10-ranked contender at light heavyweight is one of many fighters from his gym and on the UFC roster as a whole that came into the sport with a background in kickboxing.

Kickboxing has always been a well represented skill set in MMA but for a long time, a lot of these specialist strikers tended to have a cap on their capabilities. It was only the ones that were able to really improve their overall game who achieved a lot of success at the highest level.

The likes of Ulberg’s teammate Israel Adesanya and the champion of his weight class, Alex Pereira, have shown what is possible for elite level strikers that are able to adapt their games for the Octagon. In a recent interview with Kevin Iole ahead of his return this weekend, Ulberg spoke about the growing number of kickboxers and the success they have in MMA.

He believes that the main difference is that there is far more emphasis now on creating a skillset for MMA, rather than being a striker with some wrestling and jiu-jitsu added on. This can also be seen with Adesanya saying that other kickboxers from his gym like Navajo Stirling are more well-rounded than he is because they’ve adopted this approach earlier on.

“A lot more attention is going to MMA in particular. There is not one particular where everyone’s just got a few more tricks now to present themselves with and I feel like if you don’t have the full package then you’re not going to go very far in the division.

“It’s a universal language when it comes to MMA right now where you kind of have to build all of your skill set in terms of your grappling as well as your stand up game.”

Volkan Oezdemir vs. Carlos Ulberg - Odds and Match Preview

A light heavyweight bout between Volkan Oezdemir and Carlos Ulberg is set to take place at UFC Macau on November 23, 2024. This matchup pits two top-10-ranked fighters against each other in what promises to be an explosive contest.

Volkan Oezdemir vs. Carlos Ulberg

Switzerland’s Volkan Oezdemir is currently ranked 6th in the division and is known for his knockout power. He’s a former title challenger who has recently found his form again, winning his last two fights impressively. Oezdemir’s background is primarily in kickboxing, which translates to his hard-hitting style in MMA. With another win, there are many options ahead of him, just as you have many options when it comes to the best crypto betting sites that you can see here.

He’s looking to continue his winning streak and potentially work his way back into title contention With two first-round finishes, he is looking for a continuous climb. Most recently, he knocked out Johnny Walker and submitted Bogdan Guskov.

On the other side, a rising star from New Zealand Carlos Ulberg, ranked 10th, with a professional kickboxing background. Training out of the renowned City Kickboxing gym alongside champions like Israel Adesanya, Ulberg has shown tremendous potential in the UFC. He’s currently on a six-fight win streak, with five of those victories coming by way of finish.

Interestingly, Carlos Ulberg is a part-time model and was offered a role on the TV series The Bachelor. Most recently, he only needed twelve seconds to knock out Alonzo Menifield. Prior to that, he stopped Jung Da-un, Ihor Potieria, Nicolae Negumereanu, and Tafon Nchukwi all by way of KO/TKO or submission in the UFC.

A win for Oezdemir could solidify his position in the top 5 and put him back in the title conversation. For Carlos Ulberg, a victory over a seasoned veteran like Oezdemir would be a significant step up.

Ulberg opened as the favorite with odds of -205, meaning you would need to bet $205 to win $100 on him. These odds have since shortened, with some bookmakers now offering him at -255. This shift indicates that more money has been placed on Ulberg, causing oddsmakers to adjust their lines to balance their books.

On the other hand, Volkan Oezdemir started as the underdog with odds of +175, which means a $100 bet would return $175 in profit if he wins. His odds have also moved, with some bookmakers now offering +215. This movement suggests that while Oezdemir is still the underdog, the betting market sees him as having a slightly better chance than initially thought.

Both men are primarily strikers, but they bring different attributes to the table. Oezdemir has the edge in experience and power, while Ulberg possesses superior youth and momentum.

The odds imply that Ulberg has about a 70% chance of winning the fight, while Oezdemir’s chances are around 30%. These probabilities are based on the betting market’s perception and don’t necessarily reflect the actuality.
