It didn’t take long for UFC light heavyweight Carlos Ulberg to find his range on the feet and blitz Tafon Nchukwi for the finish.
Ulberg faced Nchukwi in the featured preliminary bout on the UFC Vegas 57 card. He was looking to earn a second-straight victory following a unanimous decision win over Fabio Cherant back at UFC 271.
Ulberg quickly pushed the pace on the feet and hit Nchukwi with a stiff jab that badly wobbled him. He followed it up with a series of hooks that put a quick stop to the fight in the first round.
Ulberg’s win also prompted quite the reaction from his teammates, Alexander Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya, along with the MMA Twitter community.
Ulberg earned a shot in the UFC following a first-round knockout on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020. He lost his debut at UFC 259 against Kennedy Nzechukwu but has looked like a brand new fighter ever since.
UFC Vegas 57 is headlined by a lightweight matchup between rising contenders Arman Tsarukyan and Mateusz Gamrot.

UFC 259 was hyped to be one of the biggest PPV events of the year, and for the most part, it delivered in an emphatic fashion. However whilst the main card had some impressive performances, most notably Amanda Nunes’ clinical finish of Megan Anderson, all of the events bonuses took place on the prelims.
However, with six finishes out of ten fights, it is clear to see why. Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling’s high paced bantamweight title fight would likely have found a place in the post-fight bonuses, had Yan not landed an illegal knee that led to him being disqualified. Israel Adesanya and Jan Blachowicz’s much anticipated main event fight was somewhat of a lacklustre affair, becoming somewhat of a point fighting matchup up for most of the bout.
Fight Of The Night
There are debatably several fights that could have contested for this post-fight honour, but it was Kennedy Nzechukwu’s KO victory over Carlos Ulberg that claimed the award. Ulberg came out incredibly aggressive, appearing to hurt Nzechukwu early with a barrage of strikes. However, Kennedy survived, and it soon became apparent that Ulberg only appeared to have one thought on his mind, relentless pressure.
Unfortunately, he did not have the cardio or defence to maintain such a gameplan. After having some success towards the end of the first round, Nzechukwu came into the second looking like the considerably less fatigued of the two. As Nzechukwu being pressing forward, Ulberg’s only defence appeared to be reactionary head movement, as he left his hands at this hips. As has been seen on many other occasions, reactions can only keep you safe for so long. Once Ulberg’s back was against the cage, Nzechukwu landed a brutal hook that dropped the New Zealand native.
Performance Of The Night
Uros Medic made an instant impression on the 155lb division, as he put a completely one-sided beat down on Aalon Cruz. Medic dropped Cruz early and swarmed him on the ground. After landing repeated ground and pound to a clearly concussed Cruz, referee Mark Smith eventually called the fight off. A clearly star stuck Medic then gave one of the more unique post-fight interviews with Joe Rogan.
Performance Of The Night
Kai Kara France put on one of the most memorable comeback performances in recent memory to pick up the second FOTN award. Rogerio Bontorin was able to take Kara France down early and secured a body triangle. From there he began working a rear-naked choke, which the commentary team thought was going to result in an early stoppage. However, Kara France continuously hand fought, eventually breaking free with 20 seconds to go. From there he lived up to his nickname ‘Don’t Blink.’ A rapid flurry of strikes led to the walk-off KO for the CKB flyweight and a much deserved post-fight bonus.
Did the right people get bonus cheques at UFC 259?
Nigerian prospect, Kennedy Nzechukwu survived a massive opening round onslaught from UFC debutante, Carlos Ulberg — rallying in the second to stop the City Kickboxing standout with strikes. Beginning worryingly slow, Fortis MMA trainee, Nzechukwu looked on the brink of a knockout loss on a couple of ocassion in the opening frame. Plodding forward and failing to throw anything majorly significant in the first round, it appeared Nzechukwu was there for the taking if Ulberg could pick his shots.
Following a brief stoppage in the action in the second due to an inadvertant eye-poke, Nzechukwu began to open up on Ulberg who was now incredibly fatigued — dropping the New Zealander at the fence with a right hook before forcing referee, Herb Dean to halt the matchup with follow up ground-and-pound shots. The knockout loss marked the first professional defeat of Ulberg’s career.
Below, check out the highlights from Nzechukwu’s stoppage win over Ulberg.

Along with the likes of undisputed middleweight champion, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya, featherweight kingpin, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski, lightweight contender, Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker, and flyweight challenger, Kai Kara-France to name a few – the camp can now add light heavyweight kickboxer, Carlos ‘Mr. Marvellous’ Ulberg to the promotion’s ranks.
Ulberg, undefeated from his three professional mixed martial arts appearances earned his UFC contract in the main event of Dana White’s Contenders Series last night, where the Kiwi managed a massive first-round knockout victory over Brazilian knockout ace, Bruno Oliveira.
The 29-year-old 205-pound prospect, who plys his trade at City Kickboxing under the tutelage of renowned coach Eugune Bareman, and Doug Viney scored three knockout wins during his time as a kickboxer and improved to 3-0 with last night’s highlight-reel stoppage victory.
Countering an aggressive Oliveira just after the two-minute mark, Ulberg connected with a massive counter left hook, stunning the veteran, before landing a further right counter hand, sending the Corinthians MMA product, faceplanting to the canvas – with referee Herb Dean timing his separation of the two perfectly.
For fellow City Kickboxing staple, Volkanovski, the undisputed featherweight best also featured on ‘Fight Island’ at the first go-around in July, taking home a successful title defence in a close five-round rematch with former champion, Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway. In terms of next opponent, Volkanovski is expected to clash with recent big-winner, one-time title chaser, Brian ‘T-City’ Ortega sometime next year.
