Chad Mendes has confirmed reports that he is, indeed, retired from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.

Mendes was responding to comments on an Instagram video earlier today (Wed. July 3, 2019), where he confirmed that his days of fighting are now behind him. “Money” suggested he came to the decision back in December following his TKO loss to Alexander Volkanovski:

“appreciate it brotha but I retired in dec.”

He also said, “no I’m done bro. 29 years of competing. I’m content”

Mendes is one of the greatest featherweights to have ever competed in MMA history. His combination of dominant wrestling ability and vicious knockout power provided difficulty for many opposing 145 pounders over the years. The former NCAA runner-up went undefeated with a record of 11-0 before running into Jose Aldo in 2012. He was knocked out with one second left in the first round of his featherweight title bout at UFC 142.

He was able to rack up a five-fight win streak, which included a series of knockout victories, only to be bested by Aldo again – this time via unanimous decision in a very close fight that some still argue should’ve gone Mendes’ way. Following that defeat, Mendes went on to lose three of his next five fights over a near three-year span.

Conor McGregor became the first man not named Jose Aldo to beat Mendes at UFC 189 in 2015 after Mendes took the fight on short notice. He was finished by the Irishman in the second round via TKO, losing out on the opportunity to become interim 145-pound champion. Five months later, Mendes was rendered unconscious in the first round by Frankie Edgar.

Following a two-year United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension, Mendes returned in dominant fashion against Myles Jury, winning the fight via first-round TKO. This past December, Mendes fought what would ultimately be his final bout, losing via second round TKO to Volkanovski. Now, at 34-years-old, the Californian has decided to leave fighting behind, instead focusing on endeavors outside of the Octagon.

What do you think about Mendes deciding to hang up his gloves for good?

A new featherweight star was born over the weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018) in California.

Alex Volkanovski defeated former UFC featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes to open up the UFC 232 pay-per-view (PPV) card. Volkanovski joins an exclusive group of competitors who have been able to pull off the difficult feat. Mendes has only ever lost to Jose Aldo (twice), Conor McGregor, Frankie Edgar, and now Volkanovski.

After his win, Volkanovski called out 145-pound champion Max Holloway. He spoke to MMA Junkie soon after to explain:

“I called out Max Holloway, not because I think, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m definitely the next in line,’” Volkanovski said. “(Renato) Moicano was probably next in line, but he missed weight. I’m hearing a lot of people say, ‘What’s left for (Holloway) in this division?’

“He hasn’t fought a wrestler, really, for a while – a good, strong wrestler and a big puncher. Until he takes out someone like me or Frankie Edgar, then you can say he’s took out everybody in the division. I really think that.”

The 27-year-old featherweight champion is currently on a 13-fight win streak. His latest win came in dominant fashion over Brian Ortega at UFC 231 in Toronto earlier this month (Sat. December 8, 2018). After the win, Holloway and UFC President Dana White teased a move up to 155 pounds for “Blessed.”

But it’s hard to deny match-ups against grapplers such as Volkanovski and Edgar are intriguing ones for the Hawaiian.

Chad Mendes’ UFC 232 opponent has issued an apology for some past comments he made about the former title contender. Alexander Volkanovski was the man who made these comments about when Mendes was suspended by USADA.

Back in July of 2016, USADA announced that Mendes had received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping policy violation after testing positive for a prohibited substance. He tested positive for GHRP-6 (Growth Hormone-Releasing Hexapeptide) following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on May 17, 2016.

While doing an interview with Bloody Elbow to promote their fight at UFC 232, he gave an apology.

“I threw a little bit of dirt on his name. He got suspended and I’ve sort of been like, he doesn’t deserve to call there shots. He’s off of a suspension from, we all know why. At the same time, it got me what I wanted. So, sorry for rubbing your name in the dirt mate, but it is what it is. You got caught. Whatever.”

The UFC 232 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Forum in Inglewood, California. He also offered his prediction for how he thinks this fight will go down.

“Ah, I’ve been seeing it. I’ve been seeing it time and time again. Early finish, honestly. Again, no disrespect. Not because I think he’s an easier matchup than the last, but purely stylistically. Like the way we’re going to be going, I’m going to have to use some big shots, and he’s going to try and be out for it as well. I think I’m going to catch him early.”
