Aljamain Sterling def. Chase Hooper at ADXC-2

Aljamain Sterling earned a split-decision victory over Chase Hooper in a No Gi grappling match at the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship event on Friday.

Emanating from the Mubadala Arena at Zayed Sports City, ADXC-2 was the third time we’ve seen the former UFC bantamweight champion put his grappling skills to the test since suffering a brutal second-round knockout loss against Sean O’Malley at UFC 292.

After making appearances under the Polaris and Fury Pro banners, the ‘Funkmaster’ went toe-to-toe with fellow UFC fighter Chase Hooper in an event that also featured notable MMA standouts including Rinat Fakhredinov, Sidney Outlaw, Terrance McKinney, and Douglas Lima.

After going the distance with Hooper, Sterling was revealed as the winner via a closely contested split decision.

“Hooper did some good stuff and I expected that,” Sterling said in a post-match interview. “He was the bigger guy coming into this and I’m trying to transition, going up a weight class so what better way to test my skills than to see how good of a grappler I truly am for MMA and for competition BJJ than going against a guy like that.”

Fans Don’t Agree With Aljamain Sterling’s Split Decision Win

There were many fight fans tuning into the contest who did not agree with the decision in favor of Sterling, some calling the result an outright robbery on social media.

“He even robbing people in grappling competitions. Biggest fraud ever.”

“Robbery”

“SPLIT??”

“Corruption”

“And the crowd goes mild”

“N***a is the goat of split decisions”

“The splitmaster does it again”

After establishing himself as one of the greatest bantamweights in UFC history, Aljamain Sterling will make the move to featherweight at UFC 300 where he is set to square off with division staple Calvin Kattar.

Chase Hooper Clay Guida

UFC featherweight contender, Chase Hooper turned in a spectacular submission win at Fury Pro 6 this weekend, clashing with long-time perennial lightweight contender, Clay Guida, snatching up a highlight-reel calf slicer stoppage.

Hooper, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series following a decision win over 2018, spent time competing on the North American regional circuit before making an eventual UFC bow back in December of that following year.

Just 23 years of age, Hooper recently featured at UFC Vegas 63 knockout loss to Steve Garcia back in October of this year, suffering his third loss under the promotional banner.

As for Guida, the former Strikeforce lightweight title challenger featured just earlier this month on the UFC Orlando card in the ‘Sunshine State’, scoring a split decision win over Scott Holtzman.

Sharing footage of his impressive submission win over Guida, Chase Hooper explained he was honored to compete against the former, whom he described as a “legend”.

Chase Hooper boasts a 3-3 UFC record from six Octagon walks

“Thankful to end the year on a high note doing something I love,” Chase Hooper tweeted. “It was an honor to compete against a legend and hopefully I put on a good show for everybody.”

3-3 during his six-fight Octagon tenure, Hooper holds wins over the trio of David Teymur, Peter Barrett, and Felipe Colares – the most recent of which at UFC Vegas 55 back in May of last year – earning him a Performance of the Night bonus.

38-22 as a professional, Guida has competed under the UFC banner since October 2006, and during his professional career, landed victories over the likes of Josh Thomson, Nate Diaz, Rafael dos Anjos, Takanori Gomi, Anthony Pettis, Joe Lauzon, B.J. Penn, Michael Johnson, and Leonardo Santos.

In the submission grappling event’s headliner, prolific grappling talent, Gillian Robertson submitted former two-time UFC strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas with a quickfire stoppage.

In a truly dominant victory at the featherweight limit, Steve Garcia knocks back popular division prospect, Chase Hooper — landing a stunning four separate knockdowns in the opening minute and a half en route to a first round TKO win on the preliminary card of UFC Vegas 63.

Garcia, who entered tonight’s UFC Apex facility clash with Hooper off the back of a June knockout loss of his own against Hayisaer Maheshate, returned with a vengeance tonight — dropping and rocking Hopper in each lengthy exchange the two partook in.

Landing three separate knockdowns before the eventual first round win, Garcia floored the Dana White‘s Contender Series alum with a left hook after Hooper missed with a spinning effort, forcing referee, Herb Dean to step in and call a halt to the action.

UFC featherweight prospect Chase Hooper is out to show that he’s not just the “dorky” 22-year-old he may come across as on social media, he’s a world-class fighter.

Hooper certainly went some way to proving that this past weekend, when he returned from an 11-month layoff at UFC Vegas 55 in impressive fashion. Against Felipe Colares, “The Dream” displayed his striking improvements, and reiterated his jiu-jitsu talents on the mat.

In the third round, Hooper put an exclamation point on his return to the win column by becoming the first man to finish Colares, which he accomplished with some relentless ground-and-pound.

Early in his UFC career, a lot of attention directed at Hooper has surrounded his heavy and entertaining presence on social media. Unsurprisingly, when he fell to defeats against Alex Caceres and Steven Peterson, some suggested that the 22-year-old’s hype was unwarranted when it comes to his skills inside the cage.

With his performance this past Saturday, Hooper believes he began to prove that he’s not just a “dorky guy,” but also deserving of his place inside the Octagon, as he told Ariel Helwani during an appearance on The MMA Hour.

“It’s just been so much time off. (I’ve) just been really putting in the work to improve my game overall, and I feel like that really showed (at UFC Vegas 55). And to try to not just take the place of ‘this young, dorky guy.’ I have to be a UFC fighter, first and foremost. And I have to really not see myself as any different to any of these other guys.

“Obviously, I’ve had a much bigger platform just from the jump on the social media side of things, but it’s not just being content with that… Trying to step up and prove to myself, and to the three people that matter, Dana (White), Mick (Maynard), and Sean (Shelby), that I am a world-class fighter, and that I deserve to be in the UFC.”

Having brought Chase Hooper 2.0 to the cage at UFC Vegas 55, “The Dream” will be looking to return to a winning streak next time out, as his search for consistency inside the Octagon and an ascension up the ladder continues.

Hopefully his entertaining ways on social media will continue, even if he does zone in on mixed martial arts success int he coming years.

How high do you think Chase Hooper’s ceiling is in the UFC?
