In the weeks since Michael Bisping won the UFC middleweight title from Luke Rockhold in shocking fashion at June 4’s UFC 199, there’ve been an windfall of potential challengers looking to get the next shot at ‘The Count’s’ throne.

Those names include previously unforeseen competitors like Georges St. Pierre and Dan Henderson, but perhaps no legitimate contender has been more vocal about a title shot than former champion Chris Weidman, who was originally scheduled to meet Rockhold in a UFC 199 rematch before a serious neck injury postponed that fight for now.

Bisping believes that Weidman, who lost the belt to Rockhold at last year’s UFC 194, should rematch Rockhold and the winner should face him. Weidman unsurprisingly thinks ‘The count’ is simply running scared and looking for an easier fight against ‘Hendo’ or ‘GSP.’ After the East Coast native voiced that thought online, Bisping fired back today (Sun., June 26, 2016) with the notion that Weidman should win a fight, as he seems to be suspiciously injured quite a bit in the post-USADA era:

Weidman then responded that Bisping was trying awfully hard to trash his name while looking for to fight seemingly easier opponents:

And the former champ didn’t stop there, adding that he would stop picking on a guy that ‘didn’t want to fight’:

So it seems the trash talk battle between Bisping, Weidman, and the rest of the suddenly wide-open UFC middleweight division is in full swing without an end in sight. With Weidman hopefully returning from his neck issue in time to fight at November’s monstrous UFC 205 debut in his home state of New York, a match-up with the British champion obviously makes sense from a pure marketing and magnitude standpoint.

Now it’s up to the UFC to find out just who wins the ‘Bisping Sweepstakes’ and actually gets the next crack at the belt.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping capitalized on the opportunity to take Chris Weidman’s place in the title fight with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, doing so on just two weeks notice. Many believed Luke Rockhold would retain his belt, especially given the dominant win he held over ‘The Count’ in their first fight, but the Englishman made good on his promises to finish ‘Rocky’ on June 4. A flurry of clean punches to the chin cleaned out Rockhold in the first round, and Bisping had finally captured a title after 10 years of hard work.

With the storming victory came a stream of challenges from a line of contenders. Jacare Souza, Dan Henderson, Rockhold, Chris Weidman and even Georges St-Pierre wanted a crack. ‘GSP’ claimed a return fight with Bisping was ‘close,’ Henderson and ‘The Count engaged in an all new war of words that has fans clamouring for a rematch of their classic UFC 100 meeting. ‘Hendo’ scored an iconic knockout over Bisping that night and it seems somewhat fitting to have Henderson retire after a rematch, although the rankings would argue otherwise.

But through all of this the former champ and number one contender Chris Weidman hasn’t really had his name thrown in the mix all that much. ‘The All American’ pulled out of the UFC 199 main event after a neck injury, later undergoing successful surgery to fix the issue. Now he’s clearly trying to drum up some hype for the most realist fight that’s been suggested since Bisping took over the division.

It’s certainly a strange spot for the 185-pound division to be in right now. The unfinished business with a soon to be retired Henderson could well overshadow the official rankings in this scenario, and leave matchmakers with a tall task regarding the rest of the middleweight contenders. Should ‘Hendo’ have to fight his way back up or just retire, or does his epic KO over Bisping hold enough weight to have the ageing legend skip the queue?

The former champion Chris Weidman could fight Luke Rockhold in the meantime, but what would Jacare do? Throw in St-Pierre, who’s never even fought at middleweight, and you have an even more entertaining but also troublesome mix.

The only man smiling here is Bisping, who apparently hasn’t changed a bit.

The UFC middleweight division obviously got quite the shakeup when monstrous underdog Michael Bisping knocked out -1000 favorite Luke Rockhold (highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., June 4, 2016) UFC 199 from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Bisping said that he was understandably going to enjoy the belt that had taken him 10 years to finally get around his waist, but also revealed that he would perhaps ‘knock out’ a few other challengers before granting a trilogy match to Rockhold, who previously submitted him in late 2014.

Rockhold was originally supposed to face former champion Chris Weidman in a rematch of their UFC 194 bout, but a significant neck injury to Weidman opened up an opportunity for Bisping to win the biggest fight of his career. A fight against top contender Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza would obviously make sense for Bisping, but a bout with Weidman, who is hopefully targeting a return at November’s UFC 205 in his home state of New York, might be a bout that’s too big to pass up.

And as expected, Weidman had some conflicting opinions about the fight tonight. First, he apologized for everyone for supposedly ‘creating’ the ‘cocky bastard’ that Rockhold had become:

Then, after Bisping shockingly knocked out Rockhold in the first round, Weidman was quick to note that cockiness was ultimately Rockhold’s downfall:

Weidman was soon overcome with uncertainty, however, as he revealed he didn’t know what to think about the surprising situation:

Finally, Weidman came to his senses and congratulated Bisping in a bit of a back-handed way, adding that “The Count” would “hand him” his former title back at Madison Square Garden in November:
