Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is confident that he is the man to dethrone current 185lb king Israel Adesanya who is fresh off emphatically defending his title against Paulo Costa at UFC 253.

In a conversation with Chael Sonnen Weidman stated that he would be the first man to beat ‘Stylbender’ if they fought.

“Absolutely (I can beat Adesanya). I think that’s a tailor-made matchup for me. Those athletic strikers, tall lanky guys, I’ve proven that I can beat,” Weidman said. “I think pressure, wrestling, heavy punches, and kick, you know just nonstop pressure is what you need to beat them. That’s the recipe that beats those guys. I’ve proved that with Anderson Silva twice, Uriah Hall another one. Those guys are in trouble against me.”

Weidman has won just two of his last seven fights but thinks he has done enough to earn a shot at Adesanya who he believes will struggle with his elite-level wrestling.

“I’m with you man. I think that’s an exciting fight to make. If you look up and down the rankings, I don’t think there’s too many other fights that are going to excite people the way our narratives could work, and what I bring to the table. It’s not any bulls**t, it’s just facts,” Weidman said. “If you’re into MMA and you really understand the game, you look at my game and you know I present some serious trouble for Adesanya, and more than anybody’s ever had in the past.

“He hasn’t really fought any other great, accoladed wrestler, other than Yoel Romero who doesn’t use his wrestling. So, I don’t even count that. I’m the type of guy that will bring that pressure, and I will take him down and I’ll ragdoll him on the floor. It is the same thing when I fought Anderson Silva.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman has shut down talk of a possible rematch against the man who dethroned him, Luke Rockhold who has recently announced he will return to fighting.

Weidman got back to winning ways at UFC Vegas 6 last weekend. He wrestled his way to victory against #11 ranked middleweight Omari Ahkmedov.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show the ‘All American’ admitted to feeling immense pressure heading into UFC Vegas 6 after losing five of his last six fights.

“I really do a good job to try and tell myself that there is no pressure,” Weidman said. “But looking back there was so much pressure in this fight. I really wanted this ‘W.’ All the doubters and the haters and everyone saying I should retire, ‘No Chin Weidman, you suck,’ all this stuff, it fuelled me.

“It fuelled me because I know my potential and that I still have it and I am still capable of facing the best guys in the world and beating them based on my training with the best guys in the world,” Weidman added.

Now that he is back in the win column Weidman is hoping to work his way into title contention. Unfortunately for fans that means a fight against the recently unretired Rockhold is unlikely.

“I don’t know what that does for me,” Weidman said the potential rematch with Rockhold. “It’s a fight that I get a win back. But he hasn’t done much in a while. He is coming off retirement. A win over him doesn’t do much for me, and I really want to put myself in title contention. I’d rather fight a guy who is up in the rankings more. I don’t know. I am not completely opposed to it but I’m nor really sure what makes sense right now.”

“For him to just come right back and have a fight against me, a big, big fight, he should put some work in.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Luke Rockhold Reveals Fighters He Has Eye On Other Than Chris Weidman

Rockhold

Luke Rockhold is not only targeting Chris Weidman.

The former UFC middleweight champion recently expressed his intentions to return to the sport and hinted at a rematch with Weidman.

However, there are other names in the middleweight division that Rockhold has his eye on as well.

“There’s Darren Till, there’s the grappler the Norwegian kid, he looks good, [Jack] Hermansson looks tough,” Rockhold told Submission Radio. “I want somebody who means something and is a name, something meant to be. I left the division the number two-ranked middleweight in the world. So, they can say what they want because I’m unranked at the moment, but I can come back and reassert myself very quickly if I need to.”

“Anderson [Silva] would be fun, but I don’t think he wants anything of this sort. He called me out when he was in the UFC, and I called him out and he ran away, and then, you know, even at this point I don’t think he still wants it. I’ve put that fight in the hands of their team and they’ve seemingly worked their way around it as best they can over the years – many, many years of it.”

Rockhold vs. Whittaker?

Another name that interests Rockhold is another former champion in Whittaker. The pair were originally set to face each other at UFC 221 for the 185-pound strap back in February 2018 until an injury forced Whittaker to withdraw.

“The Reaper” recently returned to the win column last month after outpointing Till, but for Rockhold, the Aussie doesn’t look the same as he did during his run to the middleweight title.

“I don’t think Rob looked like he was back in the day,” he added. “I think Darren Till looked okay. I think he looked like decent. Rob doesn’t look like he’s got the fire he’s once had. I mean, you gotta find the fire if he’s going to come back and compete at that level.

“I’m not opposed to it [fighting Rob]. I’m gonna let him go do his thing and then see how he fares. [Jared] Cannonier’s got some, that dude’s got some fire in his blood. And so, if Robert doesn’t find that f*cken fire, he’s gonna fall short. So, I’m just looking at the division as a whole. And you gotta be ready, you gotta be fired up, you gotta be motivated.”

Rockhold last competed in July last year when he was knocked out by Jan Blachowicz in his light heavyweight debut. In total, he has lost three of his last four outings.
