UFC Boston Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

This is a very interesting matchup. Reyes is very well-rounded, but hasn’t faced a wrestler of Weidman’s caliber yet. Not to mention Weidman will have more mass on him at 205 pounds. However, Weidman has been subject to knockouts as of late, and jumping up to light heavyweight where fighters hit harder might be an issue. I have a funny feeling Reyes gets it done with a TKO finish and punches his ticket to a title fight with Jon Jones (Prediction: Dominick Reyes)

Abhinav Kini:

Ideally, I would pick Dominick Reyes. However, his last performance against Volkan Oezdemir didn’t really impress me and like many, I thought he should have lost that one. I don’t think he’s faced a true wrestler yet either and Weidman has had a lot of time to recover from his last loss and will be better served by not having to cut an extra 20 pounds. I have Weidman winning a decision. (Prediction: Chris Weidman)

Cole Shelton:

Dominick Reyes vs. Chris Weidman is a super interesting fight. It could go one of two ways, in my opinion. Either Reyes knocks Weidman out or Weidman uses his wrestling and his experience to help him ride out a decision win or a submission win. I favor the latter with Weidman getting it done. (Prediction: Chris Weidman)

Chris Weidman is set to make his light heavyweight debut at UFC Boston on Friday. Should he get past Dominick Reyes, the former middleweight champion could very well be fighting Jon Jones next.

Given that is a realistic possibility, Chris Weidman was asked who is more intimidating between Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.

“At the time Anderson Silva had such a mystique and an aura about him that was actually greater than Jon Jones,” Weidman said at Wednesday’s UFC Boston media day (via MMA Junkie). “He was dominating everybody, putting his hands down, playing with them. Jon Jones isn’t doing that. He had two tough fights in his last two outings against guys who were middleweights. Two tough guys, but he didn’t look unbeatable in those fights. Anderson Silva, he had the invincibility feel to him when I fought him.”

Although he won both fights against Silva and solved the puzzle, Chris Weidman believes Jon Jones is another different challenge for him.

“As far as skillset, it’s a very interesting puzzle. I think (Jones is) more of an interesting puzzle as far as skillset, but maybe not as much of a puzzle when it comes to mindset and keeping mental focus and not letting the moment get to you and all that.

“One of the reasons I’m definitely excited to go (to light heavyweight) is there’s a guy there who people think can’t be beat and who people consider to be one of the greatest of all time, if not the greatest of all time,” Weidman added. “That’s what really excited me at middleweight. So to have the opportunity to not just shock the world once, but also twice in my career, and beat two of the guys that people think are the GOATs, that’s the sort of legacy I think I would want to leave behind.”

For Chris Weidman to get that fight with Jon Jones he must win on Friday night.

Chris Weidman Plans On Spoiling Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya Plans

Chris Weidman already spoiled one all-time mixed martial arts (MMA) dream fight, and now he plans on doing exactly that yet again. Chris Weidman already spoiled one all-time mixed martial arts (MMA) dream fight, and now he plans on doing exactly that yet again. Several years ago, during a time where a fight between then-middleweight king Anderson Silva and then-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre seemed possible, Chris Weidman shook up the combat sports world.

In July of 2013, Weidman defeated Silva via second-round knockout to win the 185-pound title. In their rematch, Silva gruesomely broke his leg in the second round, again awarding Weidman the victory via TKO. The shine of having two streaking champions face off against each other in “GSP” vs. Silva, mixed with the Brazilian’s leg injury sidelining him for so long, all but ended that dream scenario.

Now, Weidman has the opportunity to spoil the party once again. Currently, Jon Jones reigns atop the mountain at 205 pounds with no signs of slowing down, and with Weidman now jumping up to his weight class, “The All American” has his sights set on handing the Jackson-Wink product his first legitimate loss inside the cage. Of course, fans are now clamoring to see Jones take on newly-crowned middleweight champion Israel Adesanya in a potential dream fight.

Adesanya and Jones have been beefing with one another online for the past several months, and now that the devastating striker has some gold around his waist, and the interest from UFC president Dana White, a fight between the two champions might not be far off. However, Weidman makes his light heavyweight debut in the main event of UFC Boston this weekend against Dominick Reyes. Should Weidman prove to be successful, he could jump the line for a shot at “Bones.”

If he does that, and somehow manages to do the unthinkable in beating Jones, it will all but ruin yet another dream fight MMA fans are crossing their fingers for. Speaking after open workouts this week to MMA Junkie, Weidman said he believes he can land a title fight with Jones if victorious this weekend in Boston.

“I think so, because of what I accomplished in the past and coming in against a guy who’s undefeated ranked fourth in the world in that weight class,” Weidman said. “If I go out there and do what I believe I can do, I don’t think you can really deny it. Especially because Jon Jones has faced most of the top guys and beat most of the top guys. Why not?”

Weidman then acknowledged the beef between Jones and Adesanya, and the likelihood that both men are angling to build up a fight between each other down the line. However, Weidman was very clear about his intentions to spoil those plans.

“I think Israel Adesanya did a great job in his last fight,” Weidman said. “I think he’s trying to bait him into coming up and taking a big fight because Adesanya became a big star. I think it’s a big fight for Jon Jones. I think he’s just trying to egg him on, but I’m going to ruin all of that.”
