Sydney Sweeney Details 'Emotional' Experience Playing Boxing Legend Christy Martin on the Big Screen

Sydney Sweeney’s upcoming biopic about women’s boxing icon Christy Martin has officially wrapped.

Earlier this year, Sweeney (Anyone But You, Immaculate) announced that she would portray Martin in a film depicting the trials and tribulations of one of boxing’s most influential females. Over the last several months, Sweeney has documented her incredible body transformation on social media, but she hasn’t commented on her experience making the film until recently.

In a post on the 27-year-old star’s Instagram, Sweeney shared a lengthy tribute to Martin and called her experience on the film “transformative” and “deeply inspiring” alongside a picture of the pair.

“I don’t usually write a lot in my captions, but this movie and experience I feel need more than just a few words. We have wrapped filming Christy Martin’s story and it has been one of the most emotional, transformative experiences of my life. Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring, and having her by my side during this process was nothing short of surreal. There were moments on set where I’d glance over at her standing by the monitors, cheering us on, and I’d just become so emotional.

“This story is so much bigger than just a film. It’s a testament to resilience, survival, and finding the strength to keep fighting.”

Sydney Sweeney loved the challenge of bringing Martin’s ‘physically and emotionally demanding’ story to the big screen

Competing from 1989 to 2017, Christy Martin amassed an incredible 49-7 record with 32 of her victories coming by way of knockout. Along the way, the West Virginia native captured the WBC women’s super welterweight title.

Martin became a well-known name in the world of boxing during the mid-90s, gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated and becoming the first woman to sign with famed promoter Don King. In 2016, she became the first female boxer inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

14 months after her WBC title win, Martin’s then-husband 66-year-old James V. Martin stabbed her several times and shot her at least once in the torso before leaving her for dead in their Apopka, Florida home following an argument. Miraculously, Martin survived the attack and a week later, he was apprehended.

In April 2012, he was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison — a sentence he is currently serving at the Graceville Correctional Facility in Graceville, Florida.

Christy’s story isn’t a light one; it’s physically and emotionally demanding, and there’s a lot of weight to carry,” Sweeney told Deadline earlier this year. “But I love challenging myself.”

Sydney Sweeney Gets Swole For New Role

Hollywood sensation Sydney Sweeney looks practically unrecognizable as she prepares to take on the role of one of the greatest female boxers in the history of the sport.

Coming off the hit rom-com Anyone But You and the well-received horror flick Immaculate, Sweeney is set to step into the shoes of Christy Martin and tell the story of her rise to become America’s most well-known female boxer in the 1990s. Martin became the first woman to sign with legendary boxing promoter Don King and is the only the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Martin became one of the biggest stars in the sport, male or female, but behind all her fame, fortune, and beauty was a woman battling personal demons, toxic relationships, and a horrific attempt on her life.

Preparing to pour herself into the role, Sweeney has undergone an incredible body transformation to portray one of the most iconic figures in women’s sports. She recently offered a sneak peek into her new look for the role via social media.

“Well the cats out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes so here’s a little bts from my film I’m working on right now. over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all,” Sweeney wrote on Instagram. “More to come soon.”

Sydney Sweeney is passionate about bringing Christy Martin’s story to the big screen

Over the last couple of years, Sweeney has become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with critically acclaimed performances in HBO’s popular series Euphoria and a biopic based on the arrest of real-life whistleblower Reality Winner.

Now, Sweeney appears to be swinging for awards season by portraying a woman whose story is as inspiring as it is tragic.

“Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse,” Sweeney told Deadline. “I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”

Martin went 49-7 in her pro boxing career and captured the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009. A year later, Martin was stabbed several times, shot at least once in her torso, and left for dead by her then-husband, James V. Martin following an argument in their Apopka, Florida home.

Miraculously, Martin survived the attack.

Martin was taken into custody a week later and was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is set to make her long awaited return to the Octagon when she meets current titleholder Amanda Nunes in the main event of Dec. 30’s UFC 207 – that is if the “Rowdy” one makes it to the cage, which former boxing champion Christy Martin isn’t sold on.

Rousey hasn’t competed since suffering a brutal knockout loss to Holly Holm at Nov. 2015’s UFC 193, and Martin feels as if she is the ‘worst public female image’, also taking a shot at Holm in a recent interview with Fight Hype:

“We will see if it happens. I would give anything if I were 10 years younger just to show her. I mean, are you kidding me? Holly Holm knocks you out? Holly Holm punches like a feather. Ronda Rousey, to me, is the worst public female image that we could ever have out there. Simply because she can not sit here and have an interview with you without cursing word after word after word. I mean, come on, we are out here to set an example for women, young women, young girls; for people in general. Talk like you are intelligent. When you have to use every other word with “f” this and “f” that, that shouts your lack of intelligence and your lack of vocabulary. Not only did she get her shit knocked out by a non-puncher, she’s a poor example for a person. I don’t think we will ever see her on December 30th unless Dana White has some serious contract on her that she can’t do anything else, including movies, commercials and so on unless she gets back in the ring. We will never see her in the ring again.”

Rousey has said that UFC 207 will mark one of the last fights of her career, so it’s likely that we won’t see much more of her, but do you see her making the walk at UFC 207, or do you agree with Martin?
