MMA legend Randy Couture has been reminiscing about the time he played spoiler by beating Chuck Liddell.

The comments come one week on from Dustin Poirier doing something similar. ‘The Diamond’ stopped Conor McGregor inside two rounds at UFC 257 to derail Dana White’s plans to set up a mega-money rematch between ‘Notorious’ and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Couture held the heavyweight title in 2001. He believes the UFC wasn’t happy about him beating Pedro Rizzo twice, as he was 10 years Couture’s junior and a potential future superstar.

“I don’t think they were too keen on having a 39, 40-year-old heavyweight champion,” Couture said in a recent episode of “Legend 2 Legend” with Burt Watson. “I don’t think they thought I was very marketable.”

The 57-year-old later lost his heavyweight title to Josh Barnett. Couture was scheduled to face Andrei Arlovski in 2003 before an injury to the Belarus native derailed that fight three weeks out, prompting the UFC to contact ‘The Natural’ and suggest he moves down to fight Chuck Liddell for the interim light-heavyweight title.

Liddell was on the edge of becoming a true star for the UFC. ‘The Iceman’ was engaged in a bitter feud with undisputed light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz. A fight between Liddell and Ortiz was the biggest possible fight the company could make. Couture believed the UFC wanted Liddell to have an interim belt in order to force Ortiz into a fight with his biggest rival.

“Obviously I was the fly in the ointment for that whole scenario,” Couture said. (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Couture went on to beat up and stop Chuck Liddell inside three rounds to claim the interim belt. He later picked up a decision win over Tito Ortiz to become the undisputed light-heavyweight champion. Couture believes those wins put him in “a bit of an adversarial situation” with the UFC brass.

‘The Natural’ eventually surrendered his title to Vitor Belfort before winning it back in a rematch. Couture later lost twice to Liddell in one of the all-time great trilogies before stepping up to heavyweight to win UFC gold once again, cementing his place in the Hall of Fame and as one of the greatest ever MMA fighters.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell has been trying to ease tensions in Huntington Beach, California as protests threatened to turn ugly. Since a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota killed an unarmed black man named George Floyd on May 25 the United States has been the setting for mass protest – some of which has turned violent. Liddell was actively trying to prevent a similar outcome in the city of Huntington Beach.

Speaking to ABC 7 ‘The Iceman’ urged against violence in this situation and stressed destroying property and hurting people is not going to help anybody.

“It’s good to see people defending their city. It’s just terrible. I mean, violence begets violence. Violence doesn’t help anybody. We all know what happened was wrong,” Liddell said of the George Floyd murder. “Everyone I know thinks it was wrong. It was hard to watch, but this does not help. Destroying cities, destroying people, hurting people does not do any good for anybody. So, hey, protest all you want but do it peacefully.”

This follows on from current light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones actively trying to protect his city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jones is seen on video challenging vandals and confiscating spray paint. He has since been part of the effort to help rebuild local businesses that have been negatively impacted by riots and looting.

Do you think UFC legends such as Chuck Liddell are able to make a positive impact during these tough times?

Light-heavyweight pioneer Chuck Liddell believes current 205lb champion Jon Jones is his own biggest enemy. ‘Bones’ was arrested earlier this year for driving while intoxicated and negligent use of a firearm. As a result, Jones is to serve 96 hours of house arrest as well as community service.

The light-heavyweight great has also been having some trouble inside the octagon too. In back-to-back fights Jones has managed to get the decision but not without controversy. A lot of people believe he lost against Thiago Santos and Dominick Reyes but was on the right side of bad judging.

Speaking to Submission Radio Chuck Liddell expressed his belief that Jones should not have been given the decision against Reyes, although he does admit the fight was very close and could’ve gone either way, he said.

“I thought Dominick Reyes beat him too, but by a little bit. But, I mean, it was one of those fights where I say you can’t get mad about the decision. I mean, it could have gone either way. Just deciding how you score the third round. It was close enough, you can’t really complain. But, I mean, guys are getting closer, getting better, getting closer to beating him. We’ll see.”

Liddell went on to claim Jones is his own biggest problem while referencing the various troubles he is experiencing outside of the cage, he said. “He seems to be having problems holding onto it outside of the cage, and I think that’s his biggest is he’s his biggest problem.”

Beyond his problems outside the cage Liddell sees a big problem awaiting Jones at heavyweight and another one about to move up from middleweight.

“Ngannou, that’s a tough fight,” Liddell said. ”I don’t know, if Jon goes up, if he thinks he can take it. I think he’d gonna have to control the wrestling part of it and it could be a lot of trouble for Ngannou. If he’s like standing there and getting punched, Ngannou hits hard.”

“It seems like Jon’s been having a little trouble with guys coming up from 185. Maybe speed’s a problem for him. I don’t know. But Adesanya, if Jon is able to control the wrestling, able to take him down and control that and control where the fight’s fought, he’ll be in a lot of trouble. But Israel’s tough, man. I like him. And I like them going and forth. It’s kind of funny.”

“It’s entertaining. Those guys are entertaining back and forth. I think if they give it a little more time they can make a big fight out of it.”

UFC legend Chuck Liddell believes lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov may be wary about facing Conor McGregor in a rematch.

Nurmagomedov dominated McGregor when they clashed in the UFC 229 headliner back in October 2018 which resulted in a fourth-round submission victory. McGregor has since declared that he didn’t have the right training camp leading up to the fight and has regularly campaigned for a rematch.

UFC president Dana White has also been open to a rematch. The fans, however, along with Nurmagomedov don’t seem as enthusiastic about it. For one, most in the mixed martial arts world want to see Nurmagomedov finally face Tony Ferguson.

“The Eagle” also seems to remain uninterested in fighting McGregor again despite a sequel likely to guarantee his biggest career payday yet. But for Liddell, it may be because he’s worried about facing a better McGregor on the night.

“In the last fight, I think he [McGregor] did what he needed to do to have a shot at beating Khabib,” Liddell told talkSPORT. “The problem was he was tired by the third round and he had nothing left behind his punches. He got Khabib a little tired and he had a chance to throw and he just had nothing left to knock him out.

“So if he can make it through those first two rounds and still have that snap he’s got, he can take a shot at him. It doesn’t seem like Khabib wants to give him a shot… and that doesn’t make sense unless Khabib is worried about getting beat. Maybe Khabib is worried about Conor getting better and beating him, I don’t know.”

While that is highly debatable, Liddell joins many in wanting to see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson which he sees as an intriguing matchup given the latter’s abilities.

“And I’d love to see Tony vs Khabib,” Liddell added. “I love Khabib, he’s a great fighter, man, but I think Tony matches up perfectly with him. He’ll probably take Tony down for the first couple of rounds, but Tony will make him work and make him work to take him down.

“And the thing is, Tony doesn’t get tired. When they come out for the third round and Khabib is starting to get tired and Tony is not, he’s going to have a real tough time taking him down at that point. He’s had a little bit of trouble in the third round in the past, trying to get his breath back before he takes guys down again. We’ll see. He’s evolving all the time, working all the time, too.”
