Octagon icon Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson made more money from one fight than most make throughout their entire mixed martial arts careers.
Challenging then-light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 in May 2007, ‘Rampage’ caught ‘The Iceman’ on the chin with a vicious right hook just 90 seconds into the bout. Following it up with some ground-and-pound strikes, the contest was quickly called off and Jackson was declared the winner at the 1:53 mark of the very first round.
But it wasn’t just UFC gold that Jackson left with that evening. He also took home a big f*cking check.
“They gave me a crazy pay-per-view deal because they knew they weren’t going to do pay-per-view and then Dana White and the UFC bought my contract,” Jackson said on the JAXXON Podcast, referring to the UFC buying out his contract from the WFA in 2006. “So when I fought Chuck, I made millions. I made about $7 million on the Chuck Liddell fight. But then they figured out my pay-per-view numbers were crazy so my next fight when I fought Dan Henderson, was on TV. They didn’t want to give me pay-per-view.”
When ‘Rampage’ signed with the World Fighting Alliance he was entitled to a large cut of pay-per-views, though it was a non-issue for the promotion as WFA did not produce PPV events. However, when the UFC bought out Jackson’s contract along with other WFA assets, he was still entitled to the PPV percentage promised to him, which netted him $7 million from the Liddell fight — bonuses and sponsorship deals withstanding.
The buyrate for the Liddell fight was reportedly 675,000. With an average UFC PPV price of $40 at the time, that would mean Jackson was entitled to roughly 25% of the PPV revenue leaving 19% for the promotion as 56% automatically went back to the cable providers.
It’s no wonder why Jackson’s next fight aired on Spike TV instead of on PPV.

Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was caught on camera falling off a boat and into the San Diego Bay during an outing on Saturday.
The UFC Hall of Famer appeared to be having a good time with two other individuals, posing for the TMZ cameras when suddenly he slipped backward and went tumbling into the Bay. Fortunately, ‘The Iceman’ appeared to be okay as he was pulled back on board.
The legendary career of chuck liddell
Chuck Liddell is one of MMA’s most beloved. Making his UFC debut in 1998 during the dark ages of the sport, Liddell worked his way up the roster, capturing the light heavyweight division’s top prize at UFC 52 against Randy Couture. He went on to defend the belt four times against Jeremy Horn, Renato Sobral, Tito Ortiz, and in a rematch with Couture. Though his rivalry with Ortiz was by far the most notable of his illustrious career.
He also went toe-to-toe with UFC stars, including Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, ‘Shogun’ Rua, Rashad Evans, Rich Franklin, and Vitor Belfort. In 2008, he delivered the Fight of the Year against recently announced Hall of Fame inductee Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79.
Liddell was also the first UFC superstar to cross over into mainstream media, making appearances in a slew of film and television programs. He voiced himself on an episode of The Simpsons and made cameos in a slew of movies like How High, Drillbit Taylor, Kick-Ass 2, and War Pigs.
He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2009.
The Fast and The Furious film star has certainly seen better days after recent reports revealed that the action icon is being sued by a former employee over an alleged sexual assault that took place during the making of Fast Five, arguably the best of the love-it-or-hate-it franchise.
Diesel also had a very public spat with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson after they shared the screen for multiple installments of the series, but according to UFC legend Chuck Liddel, Diesel played a role in him making peace with his longtime Octagon rival, Tito Ortiz.
Appearing on a recent episode of Bradley Martyn’s Raw Talk, ‘The Iceman’ recalled the moment he squashed the beef with Ortiz, noting that Diesel was involved and acting as a moderator of sorts during the interaction.
“So Tito [Ortiz] when he was fighting Vitor Belfort, he was doing a radio interview in San Diego, said ‘I don’t date white trash like Chuck’ And a bunch of guys called me up… So I wasn’t real happy with him,” Liddell recalled. “We went to that fight and after the fight there’s an afterparty at I think seven, John Huntington was promoting it, friend of ours.
“He comes up to me, he’s like ‘Bro, you gotta squash this stuff with Tito because your guys are going to fight his guys. I don’t need trouble in here. I don’t need problems with you. Please squash it.’I went over, they got Tito over. Actually, Vin Diesel was there too, I don’t know he was negotiating I guess… He was trying to get us to talk. I’m like okay, first off this is my girlfriend, apologize. Secondly, you ever talk about my family and friends on a radio interview again, I know where you live, I’ll come beat you in your living room, you understand that?
“He’s like yeah, no man, I got it, I’m sorry, I wasn’t talking about her. I was talking about Juliette Lewis… I’m like, ‘Really? She’s not white trash, bro. She plays characters in movies, you idiot” (h/t MiddleEasy).
Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz engaged in one of the UFC’s most memorable feuds, producing two fights with the first going down on April 2, 2004. On that night, Liddell scored a second-round knockout of the ‘Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ to hand Ortiz a second straight loss in the Octagon. Two years later, they would run it back at UFC 66 with ‘The Iceman’ once again walking away the victor via a third-round TKO.
They would meet for the third and final time under the Golden Boy Promotions banner in 2018 with Tito Ortiz winning via a first-round KO. Liddell had been retired for eight years before taking the fight.
The two light heavyweight legends were spotted having some fun together at the afterparty following Israel Adesanya’s win over Alex Pereira at UFC 287.

Mixed martial arts legends Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz were seen celebrating with newly-crowned UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya after his UFC 287 win on Saturday night.
Adesanya, who knocked out longtime rival Alex Pereira, regained the 185-pound title after losing it last November. He partied with Liddell, Ortiz and even Kamaru Usman at the E11EVEN nightclub in Miami, Florida.
Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz Have History
The two MMA legends were involved in one of the greatest rivalries in UFC history. Liddell (21-9) won the first two fights by knockout at UFC 47 and UFC 66 while Ortiz (21-12-1) secured his own KO win in Nov. 2018.
Liddell and Ortiz, who both are former UFC light heavyweight champions, were both inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
Liddell, one of the greatest mixed martial artists in history, initially retired in 2010 but returned for the 2018 bout with Ortiz in which he came up short. He ultimately ruled out another return in March 2020.
Ortiz, who last fought in Dec. 2019, has been outspoken about wanting one final fight to end his career. He had a short-lived retirement in 2018.
Now, it seems that Liddell and Ortiz have a rekindled friendship as they were both dancing alongside Adesanya after UFC 287.
Adesanya, the two-time middleweight titleholder, had every right to celebrate after finally conquering his biggest career obstacle in Pereira, who previously defeated “The Last Stylebender” on three separate occasions, twice in kickboxing and once in MMA, respectively.
Now, the 33-year-old is focused on cementing his legacy as the greatest 185-pounder of all-time. During his post-fight press conference, he shot down a potential trilogy bout with his long-time rival. Instead, he wants to face new opponents to further solidify himself as champion.
Adesanya will undoubtedly join Liddell and Ortiz in the UFC Hall of Fame someday.

Alex Pereira is getting some help from a UFC legend before his first title defense next month.
Five months removed from his shocking fifth-round knockout of Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, Pereira will return to the Octagon to defend his middleweight championship for the first time against the man he took it from. Pereira is already in the process of cutting weight for the April 8 matchup and now appears to be getting some last-minute help from UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell.
In a video clip uploaded by ESPN MMA on Twitter, ‘The Iceman’ can be seen giving tips to Pereira and his training partner.
If you’re looking to get tips on how to improve your standup skills, there are few better than Chuck Liddell. ‘The Iceman’ became one of the promotion’s hottest acts during the 2000s, capturing the light heavyweight championship and successfully defending it four times in less than two years’ time. Throughout his storied career, Liddell scored victories over other MMA icons including Vitor Belfort, Renato Sobral, Alistair Overeem, Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, and Wanderlei Silva.
UFC 287 Will Likely Be Israel Adesanya’s Last Chance to Earn a Win Against Alex Pereira
Alex Pereira will attempt to take the tools he learns from Chuck Liddell and parlay them into his fourth career victory over Israel Adesanya. The two had previously met under the GLORY Kickboxing banner with ‘Poatan’ earning two victories, including a brutal third-round knockout of ‘The Last Stylebender’ at GLORY Heroes 15.
After transitioning to full-time MMA in 2017, Adesanya thought he had seen the last of Alex Pereira. Fast forward five years later to UFC 281 when ‘Stylebender’ once again found himself face-to-face with the heavy-hitting Brazilian. And like their previous two meetings, things did not go Adesanya’s way.
UFC 287 on April 8 will likely be Israel Adesanya’s final chance to earn that ever-elusive win over Alex Pereira, recapturing the middleweight crown in the process.
