Ciryl Gane heralded after UFC Paris knockout win he's still title contender

Ciryl Gane is back in the hunt after an absolutely dominant performance at UFC Paris.

The former interim heavyweight champion suffered a massive setback in his title tilt with reigning titleholder Jon ‘Bones’ Jones in March, but ‘Bon Gamin’ put all of that behind him and had a true return to form in the City of Light on Saturday night. Stepping into the main event for a showdown with fellow top-ten-ranked contender Sergei Spivac, Ciryl Gane put on a brilliant performance, securing a second-round TKO against the streaking Moldovan standout.

From the opening bell, it was clear that Ciryl Gane was in complete control, peppering Spivac with a bevy of strikes that the ‘Polar Bear’ simply had no answer for. Going into the second round, it was quite clear that Spivac wanted out as he repeatedly stood in the phone booth with Gane, but offered no offensive output for fear of what would come back his way.

Finally tired of playing with his food, Ciryl Gane unleashed a flurry of strikes that lasted nearly 20 seconds before the referee stepped in and called for a stoppage.

With the win, Gane has once again established himself as a formidable force in the heavyweight division. He is now 9-2 under the UFC banner, his only losses coming against the former and current heavyweight champions, Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones.

Multiple mixed martial artists, including Gane’s opponent at UFC Paris last year, Tai Tuivasa, reacted to the heavyweight star’s dismantling of Sergei Spivac in Saturday’s main event clash.

UFC Paris Gane vs. Spivak Betting Preview

Suffering just two career losses to heavyweight division standouts, Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones during his naive professional career, former interim weight class gold holder, Ciryl Gane is currently backed as a decent betting favorite to return to the winner’s enclosure in his all-Euroepan clash with Sergey Spivak this weekend on home soil in the main event of UFC Paris.

Gane, the current number two ranked heavyweight contender, led the Octagon into Paris for the first time in the promotion’s antiquity back in September of last year, turning in a Fight of the Night outing against Australian puncher, Tai Tuivasa en route to an eventual third round KO win.

That victory would propel the Fernand Lopez trainee to a vacant title affair with the above-mentioned, Jones back in March of this year atop at UFC 285 card, in a bout he would ultimately lose in hugely-one-sided fashion courtesy of a first round guillotine choke submission win.

And waiting in the wings to snatch the thunder of the hugely-touted Gane, Moldovan grappler, Spivak, who has rose through the ranks at heavyweight to land the number seven ranked – capped off with a recent first round arm-triangle submission win over common-foe, Derrick Lewis – as part of a three-fight winning run.

Ciryl Gane closing as a betting favorite to beat Sergey Spivak at UFC Paris

However, despite his considerable surge through the ranks, Spivak is entering this weekend’s clash with Gane as a +140 betting underdog over at Betway to defeat the latter and turn in an upset victory on enemy territory.

For Gane, the French favorite is riding an impressive -175 betting line currently with Betway to land a victory over Spivak this weekend on home soil – attempting to improve to 2-0 in his native land under the Octagon banner following his stoppage win over the aforenoted, Tuivasa.

Also on important note on the card, Nice native, Manon Fiorot returns to the Octagon in search of her premiere flyweight title opportunity, as she attempts to extend an impressive winning run to six fight since joining the UFC.

Returning to the Octagon for the first time since May of last year since turning in an admittedly lacklustre and forgettable strawweight title defense loss to Carla Esparza in the pair’s rematch, veteran fan-favorite, Rose Namajunas will land in flyweight waters for the first time in the Octagon.

And attempting to charter unfound territory for the first time in her professional career, Namajunas is closing as a +155 betting underdog to halt the rise of the impressive French flyweight, Fiorot, who is trending well as a betting favorite – as high as -187 over at Betway.

Namajunas has been sidelined for over and year, and given her extended period of inactivity, the Wisconsin native currently can’t depend on prior title successes, including two victories over fan-favorite, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, as well as a pair of victories over incumbent strawweight best, Zhang Weili, to lead her toward favorite status this weekend in the French capital.

Making his long-awaited UFC bow following a gold-laden tenure in Cage Warriors, French favorite, Morgan Charriere himself is closing well also of note as a betting favorite with Betway, sitting currently at -350 over Italian prospect, Manolo Zecchini in the main card opener, who sits as a +260 underdog.

Ciryl Gane

This weekend, Ciryl Gane will look to bounce back following a humiliating loss to current heavyweight world champion Jon Jones at UFC 285 in March.

After dropping two of his last three fights, ‘Bon Gamin’ will head to the Accor Arena in his native Paris, France for a clash with top-ten heavyweight contender Serghei Spivak. Ciryl Gane will be looking to maintain his spot near the top of the heavyweight rankings while the ‘Polar Bear’ is looking to jump into the top five and declare himself as a potential threat to reigning heavyweight king Jon Jones.

Ahead of their clash this weekend, Spivak spoke with French outlet RMC Sport about his impending showdown with Ciryl Gane. During the conversation, ‘Polar Bear’ directed some of his frustration toward journalists who have put his UFC Paris opponent through the ringer after suffering a lopsided loss to ‘Bones’ earlier this year.

“Journalists talk too much, too much sh*t,” Spivac said. “Who (out of them) can go to fight in the UFC? It’s really hard to go to fight. He (Gane) is first place in the UFC. He has good results in the UFC. These (people) talk sh*t. Ciryl needs to be focused on his life. This is not important for him” (h/t MMA News).

Serghei Spivak Respects Every Man That Steps In the Octagon with Him, Including Ciryl Gane

Ciryl Gane fell to Jon Jones just past the two-minute mark of the opening round at UFC 285 via a guillotine choke. Many were quick to criticize Gane’s performance, suggesting that the striking standout buckled under the pressure of another big moment.

Gane is 8-2 in the Octagon, his only losses coming against Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones. ‘Bon Gamin’ still has hopes of one day wrapping the undisputed UFC heavyweight title around his waist, but to get back into title contention, he’ll have to go through Ukrainian knockout artist Serghei Spivak.

The ‘Polar Bear’ has won three straight, defeating Greg Hardy, Augusto Sakai, and Derrick Lewis, with all three coming by way of finish. Serghei Spivak will look to make it four in a row, scoring the biggest win of his career in the City of Light on Saturday night.

“I can talk only good about my opponents,” Spivac added. “I respect everyone, and I respect Ciryl, too.”

Ciryl Gane issues warning to Tom Aspinall UFC London be careful what you wish for

Former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane has issued a warning to Tom Aspinall following the Manchester native’s stunning win at UFC London overnight, urging the contender to be careful for what he wishes, after he offered to fight the Frenchman in a title-eliminator in his next Octagon walk.

Gane, the current number two ranked heavyweight contender, is slated to make his Octagon return atop a UFC Fight Night Paris card in September, taking on soon-to-be common-foe, Sergei Spivak in a headlining clash.

The former interim heavyweight champion has been sidelined from active competition since March of this year, suffering a stunning opening round guillotine choke loss to Jon Jones in the pair’s vacant heavyweight championship battle.

As for Aspinall, the fan-favorite British contender returned triumphantly at UFC London last night in the capital, stopping Polish veteran, Marcin Tybura with a massive first round TKO – emerging from the headlining slot completely unscathed in a career-highlight performance.

Linked with a title fight against incumbent gold holder, Jones off the back of his return to winning-ways against perennial contender, Tybura last night, Aspinall laid out a roadmap to his premiere title challenge, claiming he would first fight either Gane or former opponent, Spivak first and foremost.

“I’m gonna go to Paris, I’m going to sit front row for Ciryl Gane vs. Sergei Spivak,” Tom Aspinall told Michael Bisping following his UFC London win during his post-fight Octagon interview. “I’m gonna beat the winner, then I’m gonna beat Jon Jones.”

And while Jones has welcomed a future title defense against Aspinall following his November title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295, Gane has urged the Atherton native to watch his wishes.

“Great performance, Tom (Aspinall), careful what you wish for,” Ciryl Gane tweeted. “See you in Paris.”

Ciryl Gane claims Jon Jones wasn't quick at UFC 285 He was not fast

Ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night Paris in September, former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane has played down the perceived speed and quickness of Jon Jones at the heavyweight limit – claiming the Endicott native “was not fast” during their one-sided UFC 285 title affair.

Gane, the current two ranked heavyweight contender, faced off with divisional newcomer, former two-time light heavyweight champion, Jones at UFC 285 back in March – with the duo competing for vacant heavyweight spoils.

And suffering a dominant opening round loss, French contender, Gane was submitted early in the first frame with a guillotine choke – suffering just his second professional loss following a prior title unification decision blemish against promotional alum, Francis Ngannou.

Ciryl Gane explains how Jon Jones wasn’t overwhelmingly quick at UFC 285

However, according to the incoming UFC Paris main event feature, Jones was not particularly fast during their UFC 285 headlining clash, instead chalking the loss to his own ability – or lack thereof to get his feet moving in tandem with his body.

“I don’t know why exactly, but I cannot manage my distance very well during some moments, and I did a mistake,” Ciryl Gane said whilst reflecting on the bout during an interview with MMA Junkie reporter, Farah Hannoun. “It wasn’t possible to manage the distance, and I did some stuff to break this atmosphere, and I did a mistake at this moment. Maybe he (Jon Jones) knew already I’m going to do this mistake, and he took his opportunity.”

“He was not fast,” Ciryl Gane explained. “Maybe he was not fast, but I was not good, too.I didn’t manage my distance. I was not good, but I remember he was not fast. He didn’t have fast hands. He had power because he touched me. I don’t remember where, but he landed punches with power, but not fast.”

Booked to headline the second edition of UFC Paris following a knockout win over Australian contender, Tai Tuivasa in France last year, Gane is slated to take on fellow European talent, Sergey Spivak at the Accor Arena in September.

Ciryl Gane rejects Khabib Nurmagomedov’s training offer: ‘I have another job, and that’s to be a father’

Ciryl Gane

Heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane has respectfully declined Khabib Nurmagomedov’s offer to help him evolve his ground game after a less-than-stellar showing against Jon Jones earlier this year.

Gane’s lack of wrestling skills has arguably cost him the opportunity to become a UFC champion on two separate occasions. After coming up short against Francis Ngannou at UFC 270 last year, ‘Bon Gamin’ found himself with another opportunity to reach the top of the mountain in March, squaring off with Jon Jones for the vacant heavyweight crown. Fans were expecting a highly competitive contest between two of the sport’s greatest strikers. Instead, they were treated to a quick two-minute matchup that saw Jones easily take down and submit Gane.

The loss prompted one of the greatest grapplers in the history of the game, Khabib Nurmagomedov, to reach out and offer Gane some assistance in honing his skills on the mat. However, Gane can’t see himself venturing off to Russia for months at a time, leaving his family behind in the process.

“This is really kind of him, but I have another job, and that’s to be a father,” Gane told Mirror Fighting. “I have two daughters, and this is a big job. People underestimate this. To leave my family for six months for me impossible. Some people talk about one year and stuff like that. If I go for two or three weeks, my family misses me a lot. To bring some people to the gym, that is possible. Having those high-level guys in judo, wrestling, and boxing.”

Ciryl Gane’s Meteoric Rise Through the Ranks

Making his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2018, Ciryl Gane’s meteoric rise to the top of the ranks was largely due to his status as one of the most active fighters in the division. In the span of four years, ‘Bon Gamin’ has already competed under the UFC banner an astonishing 10 times, with his eleventh fight scheduled to arrive before the end of the year.

“Just four years ago, nobody knew me, and it was easy to sleep in the gym. Now it’s different. I’ve got a lot solicitation, so I must manage this also,” he added. “Like everyone in this sport, when you have success, you must prepare for life after your career. Just like Conor McGregor and Khabib have done, preparing for life after fighting. This makes sense because you cannot fight for 30 years. I was already in a rush when I started MMA. We did fight after fight, so that’s why my career has gone so fast also.”

Ciryl Gane will attempt to bounce back this September when the promotion returns to Paris. Standing in his way of a return to the win column will be streaking heavyweight standout Serghei Spivac. The Ukrainian ‘Polar Bear’ has earned three-straight knockouts against Greg Hardy, Augusto Sakai, and Derrick Lewis.
