UFC women’s strawweight champion Jessica Andrade is no stranger to trash talk from Joanna Jedrzejczyk or Claudia Gadelha.

Ever since becoming champion, Andrade has been on the receiving end of some criticism from the two. Jedrzejczyk, who outpointed Andrade in their 2017 title fight, wasn’t impressed with the Brazilian’s training videos on social media. Gadelha, meanwhile, who suffered a unanimous decision loss to Andrade in 2017, has been questioning why the latter is fighting at strawweight, considering her strength advantage.

For Andrade, their comments are just a result of jealousy:

“I’m already used to having (Gadelha) and Joanna talking a bunch of stuff, but it’s jealousy because I won the belt and they haven’t,” Andrade said recently (via MMA Fighting). “They want attention and I won’t give them any attention. They have to fight and show who deserves to fight for the belt. I had to fight three times and earn the opportunity to fight for the belt again, so they have to do the same.

“Claudia Gadelha had so many opportunities to win the belt against Joanna, I had one—and I believe that down the line, with Joanna winning, we’ll have a rematch. That Jessica from two, three years ago is not the same anymore. I believe I’ll keep this belt for a long time.”

Andrade On Criticism

Andrade believes Jedrzejczyk — who faces Michelle Waterson next — is trying to get a title shot by provoking her into a rematch:

“She wants attention, she wants to talk me into asking for this fight before it’s time,” Andrade explained. “She has to eat more rice and beans, has to get there and earn her chance. There are others ahead of her.”

As for Gadelha’s comments, Andrade had a simple response:

“Making weight is what matters, not the strength,” Andrade added. “But it’s all good. If she gets more wins like I did to earn another opportunity to fight for the belt, why not? I’d fight her again.”

What do you make of the criticism/trash talk Andrade is receiving?

Claudia Gadelha got back into the win column at UFC 239 as she beat Randa Markos by decision.

She lost her last fight against Nina Ansaroff at UFC 231 before beating the Canadian. The win also improved her MMA record to 17-4, and after the win, the Brazilian is already eyeing her next fight – against longtime rival Joanna Jedrzejczyk:

“I was a little surprised because I wanted to beat Randa tonight and call out Joanna. Cause I feel like it’s 1-1 and we gotta do a third fight,” Gadelha said post-fight. “She told me that, she knows that. I wanted to fight Joanna again, but I was a little surprised when I found out she’s fighting Michelle Waterson now. So let’s wait for them to fight and I’ll wait for that to happen because I really wanna fight Joanna again.”

The two fought back in December 2014 where Gadelha lost by split-decision in a very close fight. And, according to MMADecisions.com, 12 media members scored the fight for the Brazilian while only two scored it for the then-champ.

Gadelha and Jedrzejczyk then fought again in 2016, where the Polish fighter won by unanimous decision. The two have since gone their separate ways. As for why she wants the trilogy fight now, her disdain for the former champion hasn’t gone anywhere:

“We hate each other. Joanna, I respect her as a fighter, as a professional athlete but I don’t respect her as a person. And I spent eight weeks with her on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ and it was a nightmare,” she said.

“The way she is, the kind of person she is. And I feel like I beat her the first time. If everybody goes back and watch that fight, I beat Joanna. And that was a nightmare for my life cause I couldn’t accept that loss. So I really feel like we gotta get back in there and do it again.”

For now, Jedrzejczyk has a fight booked against Michelle Waterson, and a trilogy fight seems unlikely.

Former UFC strawweight title challenger Claudia Gadelha has a ton of confidence heading into her next bout inside of the Octagon.

She’s slated to fight Randa Markos at the upcoming UFC 239 pay-per-view on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This event is slated to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Thiago Santos.

She went undefeated prior to making her UFC debut with 12 wins under her name and no losses back in 2014. Gadelha suffered a split decision loss to Joanna Jedrzejczyk in December of the same year.

The Brazilian tells Combate that fans can expect her to be more evolved as a pro-MMA fighter compared to when they last saw her fight. In her most recent bout, she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nina Ansaroff in December 2018.

“People will see a much smarter Claudia,” Gadelha said. “I think I’m more focused on the strategy aspect, the one about understanding the evolution of the sport. MMA is evolving so much, I’m from the days when you’d step into the Octagon to brawl, so this transition has been very important to me.”

“I’m a very good MMA fighter. I have lots of experience. I began when I was 18 and now I’m 30. I think I the level of maturity as an athlete, I learned to take of myself and of my life as an athlete. I think I have many advantages coming into this fight.”
