UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley hasn’t been in the hot seat for long, but already is making some noise about huge fights. Mere minutes after starching Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ was interviewed by top contender Stephen Thompson. ‘Wonderboy’ called for his shot at the belt, but was snubbed by Woodley in short order. The newly crowned boss of the division laid two names on the table–Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.

Former 170-pound champion and UFC legend GSP has been inactive since a 2013 split decision over Johny Hendricks. ‘Rush’ took an extended leave of absence, referencing the lack of drug testing and personal issues as his reasons. In time we’d come to learn that St-Pierre still had the urge to fight, and just yesterday he announced he had joined the USADA testing pool. The obvious connotation from that statement is that GSP is coming back.

Money fights are the future

Former Strikeforce welterweight champ and cult UFC icon Nick Diaz had his suspension from the Nevada Commission end earlier this month. Once Woodley spoke his name, the 209 native gave a number of colourful interviews regarding the recently minted champion. In a hilarious moment, Diaz claimed Woodley ‘needed a few more fights’ before he could be considered as a worthy foe.

These comments did not go down well with ‘The Chosen One,’ who later responded by saying Diaz had ‘talked himself out of the money fight.’ The welterweight revival continued though, as St-Pierre doubled up the headlines by calling out Diaz for a rematch. Not one to miss out on all the fun, Woodley sat down with The Buzzer’s Andy Nesbitt to talk about his next fight.

“Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz are stepping-stones to me making the UFC hall of fame. I like the St-Pierre fight at UFC 205, he has a big following in New York and I think it would make a great fight. The Diaz call out was because he was one of the guys who fought when there wasn’t a lot of money in fighting. Out of all the guys I thought he really deserved a big money fight.”

“This is the biggest opportunity for the UFC to blow this out of the water. The former champion, a legend, and (me) the future of the sport. I have to go out there and prove to myself I’m the best in the world.”

Respect for CM Punk

“Fighters get enough flack from the fans. Fighters should not be giving someone else who competes that kind of flack.”

There’s a lot of potential for Tyron Woodley’s future as UFC champion. Do you think e can beat Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre? If so, there’s no denying he’ll be well up there with the best welterweight champs of all-time.

Mickey Gall Will Look Like An ‘A**hole’ If He Loses To CM Punk

Mickey Gall has become somewhat of a well-known name in the mixed martial arts world over the past year. After calling out Phil “CM Punk” Brooks on an episode of Dana White’s Looking For A Fight, Gall made his Octagon debut last February, bulldozing through Mike Jackson. He will now get to face off with Punk, a former professional wrestler with no prior fighting experience, at September 10’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio.

Due to the fact that he’s never competed in a cage before, Punk has received quite a bit of criticism. With that being said, Gall feels as if needs to represent MMA in the upcoming fight, adding in that he’ll look like an ‘a**hole’ if he loses to Punk (Via MMAMania):

“I will look like an asshole if I get beat by CM Punk,” Gall told Sirius XM Fight Club hosts RJ Clifford and Steve Cofield. “People are treating him like a joke. I’m taking it very seriously. I want people to look at like I’m representing real MMA fighters, guys who grinded, guys who had to work shit jobs to be able to make a little money around their training schedule. I hope people look at it as I’m representing MMA. I plan to back that up.”

While Gall isn’t familiar enough with Punk to promise too many mind games, he did guarantee that he will dish out a ‘whooping’ on September 10th:

“A whooping is coming whether he talks shit or not,” Gall replied. “I don’t’ know. I’m really familiar with him as a wrestler. I did hear he was a big personality and a big talker. I don’t know. I’m not sure. I’m not very familiar with him so it’s hard to get inside his head, but you know we are going to fight no matter what. I think … I get why they brought him over. I can see why people are disgruntled about it. There is money to be made with him. There is a lot of money to be made with him. There is a lot of eyes that he’ll bring. He will say pay-per-views. He will make money. I totally understand that. I think it’s a smart business move. And from what I’ve seen this guy is actually trying to be a fighter. Sure, he’s a professional wrestler, but I think he’s trying. I definitely think he is trying.”

Does Punk stand a chance against the 24-year-old Gall?

Since the very day that former WWE champion Phil “CM Punk” Brooks announced that he would be coming to the Octagon in late 2014, MMA fans everywhere have been questioning his actual ability to win a real fight, and if he ever actually would indeed step into the cage and fight.

That feeling was only amplified by the fact that his debut was delayed by a shoulder injury, but Punk apparently recovered well enough to find out that he would be facing 2-0 fighter Mickey Gall, a 23-year-old grappling champion who had just picked up only his second MMA win with a first round submission of 0-0 fighter Mike Jackson at February 6’s UFC Fight Night 82 from Las Vegas.

Many felt that Punk didn’t look all that enthused or intimidating when ‘facing off’ with Gall inside the Octagon, and again that feeling was heightened by Brooks’ revelation that he would undergo minor surgery on an ailing back from his pro-wrestling days a short time after his fight with Gall was made official. It was curious timing to put it nicely, and all of these developments have many fans rightfully wondering if the 37-year-old Punk will fight for the UFC.

They probably should be, but there’s a much bigger situation at work here. That’s the view that the UFC should end fans’ speculation for them and simply call an end to this absolute farce that has become nothing more than a circus for the UFC. Let’s examine just why it’s time for the UFC to end the CM Punk experiment now.
