Kicking off UFC 300 with a bang — former undisputed flyweight champion, Devieson Figueiredo continues his ascend up the bantamweight pile following his recent debut — turning in a second round rear-naked choke win over former undisputed division champion, Cody Garbrandt in the pair’s preliminary card opener.
Figueiredo, a former undisputed flyweight champion, made his bantamweight division debut back in December at UFC Fight Night Austin, defeating common-foe, Rob Font with a dominant striking display en route to a decision shutout win.
And matching with the veteran Ohio native, Garbrandt tonight on the preliminary card of the monumental UFC 300 event, Brazilian favorite, Deiveson Figueiredo turned in a second round win over the ex-champion, courtesy of a second round rear-naked choke win.
Scrambling well with the former champion throughout their second round exchange, Deiveson Figueiredo had attempted to lock up an arm-triangle to no avail against Garbrandt, before patiently taking his back and working for a successful rear-naked choke after a get-up attempt from the former.
Below, catch the highlights from Deiveson Figueiredo’s win over Cody Garbrandt

Cody Garbrandt looks to continue his comeback tour when he squares off with former flyweight world champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
After dropping five out of six fights inside the Octagon, ‘No Love’ has seen a bit of a resurgence, securing a unanimous decision victory over Trevin Jones before face-planting Brian Kelleher in his last outing at UFC 296. Returning to the Octagon for the promotion’s massive UFC 300 card in Las Vegas, Garbrandt will attempt to hand ‘Deus da Guerra’ his first loss in the bantamweight division and re-establish himself as a legitimate contender for the 135-pound title.
With a win over Figueiredo, Garbrandt would likely thrust himself back into the bantamweight division’s top 10, putting him that much closer to a clash with reigning titleholder ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley.
“If he’s still the champion when it’s my time to fight for the title again, regain the title, I’m happy with that fight,” Garbrandt said during Wednesday’s UFC media event. “That’s going to be a huge pay-per-view draw. No other bantamweight in the division moves the needle like I do. I just have to focus on winning and everything else will fall into place.”
Could we see Cody Garbrandt climb back into the contender’s circle at UFC 300?
Sean O’Malley is fresh off a dominant performance against Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 299, successfully defending his title for the very first time. No official announcements have been made, but ‘Sugar’ recently teased a return this September to put his crown on the line against the division’s No. 1 ranked contender, Merab Dvalishvili.
Cody Garbrandt and Deiveson Figueiredo will lead off UFC 300, an event scheduled to feature a whopping 12 former or current world champions.

Deiveson Figueiredo plans to exploit Cody Garbrandt’s “mentally fragile” state when the former champs clash at UFC 300.
Garbrandt suffered four brutal knockouts over the span of four years, going 1-5 in the process. According to Figueiredo, that string of devastating losses has left ‘No Love’ a shell of his former self.
“We see he’s mentally fragile,” Figueiredo said of Garbrandt during a recent interview with MMA Fighting. “He doesn’t have a good head. We see he hasn’t come back after having a few losses, right?”
Garbrandt climbed to the top of the bantamweight division in 2016, claiming the undisputed strap with a brilliant performance against Dominick Cruz at UFC 207. He followed that up with three consecutive knockout losses, including back-to-back defeats against T.J. Dillashaw and a first-round KO to Pedro Munhoz.
“Every athlete fears getting touched,” Figueiredo continued. “Many fighters like the in-fight but crumble when a hand lands. You have to be a badass, you need a strong mind to come back again. I think I’ll affect his mind by touching him, and he’s going to respect me more.”
Deiveson Figueiredo plans on sending Cody Garbrandt home early on April 13
After closing out his classic quadrilogy with Brandon Moreno at the top of the flyweight division, Figueiredo made the move to bantamweight, dispatching Rob Font in his divisional debut late last year. Gunning for a shot at the 135-pound crown, ‘Deus da Guerra’ plans to make a statement when he and Garbrandt lead off the biggest UFC card of all time.
“I really want the knockout in this fight,” Figueiredo said. “This fight could lead me to a title, so I want to impress. It’s going to be an incredible fight. Cody moves a lot and gives his all in the first round, and I have that same aggressive style. It’s going to be an intense fight.”

For Figueiredo, the former two-time undisputed flyweight champion made his long-anticipated bantamweight bow at UFC Austin back in December, returning to the Octagon for the first time since his fourth fight with Brandon Moreno back last January, dropping a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss in the pair’s title unification pairing.
Figueiredo was initially scheduled to fight Garbrandt in an undisputed flyweight title fight at UFC 255 back in November 2021, until Alex Perez replaced the latter on short-notice, after he suffered an injury.
