Cody Garbrandt offer to rematch Dominick Cruz in July UFC

Former undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt has been revealed he’s been offered the opportunity to rematch fellow former division titleholder, Dominick Cruz as soon as July of this year by the promotion, following his recent return to the winner’s enclosure.

Garbrandt, who was expected to fight WEC veteran, Rani Yahya at UFC 285 earlier this month, managed to return to winning ways against short-notice replacement, Trevin Jones – securing an impressive unanimous decision victory.

As for Cruz, the former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, has been sidelined since headlining UFC Fight Night San Diego back in August of last year, suffering a high kick knockout loss to incoming UFC Fight Night San Antonio headliner, Marlon Vera.

Initially matching with power-puncher, Garbrandt in the co-main event of UFC 2017 in December 2016, Cruz dropped his undisputed bantamweight crown to the then-undefeated Garbrandt, in one of the most heralded championship challengers in the history of the Octagon.

Cody Garbrandt reveals an offer to rematch Dominick Cruz is on the table

Voicing his interest in a rescheduled fight against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Yahya in the future, Garbrandt also revealed he had been approached with a rematch offer against Cruz for a UFC event in July.

“It was a good fight, man – he’s (Dominick Cruz) a legend of the sport,” Cody Garbrandt told MMA Junkie Radio during an interview. “It was a great night for me to fight such a masterclass performance gaainst one of the greatest bantamweights to ever do it. And it wa great, you know? He’s still out here plugging along and doing his thing. It’s funny, Ali (Abdelaziz) hit me up the other day and was like, ‘Hey, would you like to do a Dominick Cruz rematch in July?’”

“… I’ve got nothing against Dominick, I have a lot of respect for him – not that I didn’t prior to us fighting,” Cody Garbrandt explained. “I have a lot of respect for him you know, and understanding of him. We’ve had a lot of conversations. We run into each other – I mean, that night was just my night. I feel like any night against Dominick Cruz will be my night, for sure.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Cody Garbrandt returned to action last night and collected his first win in two years showing glimpses of the old Garbrandt that so many MMA fans fell in love with.

It’s not been an easy road for ‘No Love’ since losing the title, receiving loss after loss. But despite all this, it seems the once UFC bantamweight champion has remained unshaken by finally returning to winning ways last night when he took on Trevin Jones.

Garbrandt details injury during fight

During the post-fight interview, Garbrandt revealed to Media that “I ended up injuring my neck and had a nerve block put in my neck last week. Man, [during] my last takedown in my warm-up this morning, I ended up slamming my neck, causing a huge stinger, losing full range of motion of my left arm. And I was like, you know what, there’s never going to be an ideal situation.”

It was a takedown during the fight that saw Garbrandt get another nerve block rendering his arm completely immobile.

“I mean, my arm and neck are still [bad]. In one of the takedowns I got, I ended up getting a really bad stinger,” Garbrandt said. “He almost got me in a guillotine, but I fought out of it. But, my arm was completely dead.”

Now being 2-5 in his last seven and training with a new team, the former champ sees it possible to get back to title-winning ways by taking a more calculated approach when fighting.

It was a much-needed win last night and I’m sure many fans will of seen it as a pleasant site for the Ohio-born fighter.

Cody Garbrandt def. Trevin Jones via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights showcasing former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, and then UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who faced no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso in attempt to make the eighth successful defense of her title in the co-main event of the evening.

Headlining the preliminary card was former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt, who was initially slated to face Julio Arce at this event. However, Arce was recently forced from the bout with a knee injury and replaced by Trevin Jones.

Since winning the bantamweight title, Garbrandt had gone 1-5 over his latest six appearances, bringing his record from 11-0 to 12-5, while Jones opened up his respective UFC tenure with back-to-back knockout victories over Timur Valiev and Mario Bautista before dropping his last three-straight fights.

Round one

Cody Garbrandt opens up the bout with a pair of nasty body kicks, and he continues to land them throughout the first round. He also lands a nice overhand right and a good right cross to the body. His activity isn’t high, but he isn’t missing much and he’s out-striking Jones.

Round two

Garbrandt opens up the second with a beautifully timed takedown as he slams Jones straight into side control, though Jones is back to his feet not long thereafter. Garbrandt times another perfect takedown shot midway through the second and remains in Jones’ guard for a good 80 seconds before briefly taking his back.

This was a well rounded Cody Garbrandt we saw tonight at UFC 285, Trevin Jones landed just eight strikes through the first 10 minutes.

Round three

Garbrandt coasts the entire third round, but gets caught with a hard two-punch combination from Jones that hurts him pretty badly with about 90 seconds left in the fight. Garbrandt ties up with him, but gets caught with another right before he’s taken down. Jones remains on top of Garbrandt for the final minute of the fight.

It wasn’t the most eventful affair, there were just 21 significant strikes landed by Cody Garbrandt to Trevin Jones’ 10 with two minutes left on the clock, but the former bantamweight champion gets back to his winning ways with a universal 29-28 unanimous decision victory tonight at UFC 285.
