If Demetrious Johnson were to step into the Octagon against Cody Garbrandt, the flyweight champ would like to do so at 135 pounds.

Johnson, the sole flyweight champion in UFC history as well as arguably the promotion’s most dominant champion of all time, prepares to defend his 125-pound strap for a record 10th consecutive time tomorrow night (Sat. April 15, 2017) against Wilson Reis. ‘Mighty Mouse’ has dominated the 125-pound division since its inception and has long been called for to move up in weight to see if he can continue his dominance at bantamweight.

The current 135-pound champ, Cody Garbrandt, would be an interesting fight for the flyweight king, who tells TNS’s Aaron Bronsteter that if that fight were to be booked he’d like to compete at bantamweight (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“Obviously 135,” Johnson said. “They’re both compelling, but for me, I’d just go up. That way, if I win, I get his belt. I can stay at (1)35. For him to come down to (1)25 and he wins, does he keep the belt or does he relinquish it? Because if he comes down and beats me (and return to bantamweight), then I’ll just fight for the belt again and get it back. Like, ‘Thanks!’ But yeah, it’s a great fight, and if it happens, it happens.”

Garbrandt is currently undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career and comes off of a monumental win over Dominick Cruz to win the bantamweight title. ‘No Love’ ended ‘The Dominator’s’ near decade undefeated streak and is now set to make his first career title defense against former teammate turned hated rival TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213 on pay-per-view (PPV).

Johnson hasn’t suffered a loss since 2011 when Cruz took home a unanimous decision win over ‘Mighty Mouse’ in Washington. Since then Johnson has become the first and only flyweight champion in UFC history and is currently on a 11-fight win streak.

In the main event of UFC on FOX 24 tomorrow night from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, Johnson will attempt to tie former middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s title defense record at 10 against submission specialist Wilson Reis.

Urijah Faber thinks somebody is going to sleep when UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt defends his title against TJ Dillashaw.

Faber has witnessed what both men can do firsthand as the three were once all training partners at Team Alpha Male. Dillashaw would soon depart to follow former Alpha Male head-coach Duane Ludwig to Colorado. Now the relationship between Dillashaw and his former teammates has boiled over, and we’re likely to see fireworks when Garbrandt and Dillashaw share the Octagon.

Future UFC Hall Of Famer and former bantamweight title challenger Urijah Faber recently joined The MMA Hour earlier this week (Mon. April 10, 2017) to discuss Garbrandt and Dillashaw’s upcoming clash, and revealed that he believes ‘No Love’ will have his hand raised when it’s all said and done after a knockout finish (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I think it’ll probably be a knockout, just because Cody hits hard,” Faber said. “We’ve seen it in his fights, we’ve seen it in the room. He’s got a history. T.J.’s also a heavy hitter, but not like Cody. They’re going to be in a gun fight.”

Garbrandt and Dillashaw have spent a lot of time together lately, as they coached opposite one another on the 25th season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 25). Both men are currently at high points in their careers, as Dillashaw comes off of a two-fight win streak and Garbrandt who comes off of the biggest win of his career as he took out Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 to win the bantamweight throne.

With both men coming in on hot streaks in their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers, Faber is expecting a tough fight from his Alpha Male alumni, but still believes Garbrandt will find a way to get his hand raised in the end:

“I don’t think it’ll be that early — I don’t know when, you can’t predict that stuff,” he said. “But, I know it’s going to be a very tough fight. I’ve seen T.J. and some of his stuff, and he’s already freaking out like a wild man, as he tends to do. It’s going to be a competitive fight, and Cody’s going to get it.”

Despite retiring from MMA competition this past December with a unanimous decision win over Brad Pickett, Faber still plans on helping ‘No Love’ prepare for Dillashaw in training camp – as he has already been doing for some time now:

“I’m going to play a large roll in general, as I have been and in the future with Cody and his training and everything else,” he said. “I mean, those guys have fought each other a bunch of times. I remember all sorts of times when these guys were going at each other in the gym.

“It’s going to be more of the same. It’s hard to take someone like Cody or someone like T.J. and do stuff that’s a whole lot different from a camp, because they already train like champions. They already approach every fight with the same intensity. So, we’ll be doing the best training in the world over here at Team Alpha Male, and bringing home that strap.”

Earlier this year, it was announced that newly crowned UFC bantamweight champion Cody “No Love” Garbrandt would defend his title for the very first time against bitter rival and former champion TJ Dillashaw after the two coach opposite each other on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The fight now has a date and venue, as UFC President Dana White announced last night that the fight will take place at UFC 213 on July 8, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada during International Fight Week:

“Obviously, Cody and T.J. are already on that card (at UFC 213), so yeah, we’ll see how that goes,” White said.

Garbrandt is coming off of a career defining win over Dominick Cruz at Dec. 30, 2016’s UFC 207 where dominated the ex-champion over the course of five rounds. Prior to that, he had won five straight UFC bouts, with four of those victories coming by way of T/KO.

Dillashaw, on the other hand, has won two straight fights losing his title to Cruz in Jan. 2016. He beat Raphael Assuncao at UFC 200 last July before scoring an impressive decision victory over John Lineker at UFC 207.

UFC 213 currently does not have a main event set.
