Joaquin Buckley Down for a Clash with 'Chaos' If Usman Isn't Interested: 'I'd Definitely Take That Fight'

If Joaquin Buckley can’t finagle a fight with Kamaru Usman, he’s willing to settle for Colby Covington.

‘New Mansa’ extended his unbeaten streak to five at UFC 307, securing a third-round knockout against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and launching himself into the welterweight division’s top 10. Immediately following the win, Buckley called for a clash with former titleholder Kamaru Usman, a statement he echoed during a recent interview with Luke Thomas.

“I really don’t expect him to push for that fight just because of how difficult the fight might be for him,” Buckley said. “I’m still working on things, but I really feel like when it comes to the standup, I don’t think Usman really has anything for me.

“I think my cardio and pace is definitely gonna challenge him and usually he’s the one that’s pushing that narrative on his conditioning, but I think that I can push my conditioning past Usman at this point in my career.”

If Usman isn’t interested, Joaquin Buckley would welcome a fight with ‘Chaos’

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Usman is much too interested in a fight with Buckley. Of course, ‘New Mansa’ already has another name in mind that could help him break into the division’s top five. That being three-time welterweight title challenger Colby Covington.

“The last fight that he had was against Leon [Edwards] and that was about a year ago,” Buckley said of Covington. “Time ain’t on nobody’s side so if you really want to show the world what you’ve been up to and how you’ve been working, you got to fight. You know that I’m happy to go and find out myself too with Colby Covington if he’s not got a fight lined up.

“I’d definitely be willing to take that fight. That’s somebody that has fought for the belt, has proven himself, highly ranked in the division for 170, so why not?”

2019 was the last time Covington has fought twice in a single year. Since then, he’s barely averaged one fight per year, going 2-2 in the process. But despite the bouts of inactivity and the lack of notable wins, ‘Chaos’ is still holding strong as the sixth-ranked contender in the division making him a prime target for outliers looking to fight there way towards a shot at gold.

Joaquin Buckley earned his biggest win to date at UFC 307 in Salt Lake City to extend his welterweight winning streak to five. “New Mansa” became just the second man to stop Stephen Thompson with strikes in the UFC after exploding forward in the third round.

Buckley, who has been criticized for his post-fight call outs in the past, had one name in mind that seemed to go down well with the fans and media. He called to face former champion Kamaru Usman who has been inactive since his short notice bout with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 last year.

The #9-ranked contender hasn’t received the response that he would’ve wanted but fortunately for him, he has names other than Usman on his hit list.

In a recent interview with Luke Thomas, Buckley gave his thoughts on the rest of the welterweight top ten where some big fights could be coming soon.

After speaking about the upcoming title fight in his division at UFC 310, the former middleweight weighed in with his take on a potential fight between the undefeated Ian Machado Garry and the former interim champion Colby Covington.

This is a fight that Garry was pushing for heavily at one stage but despite several replies from Covington, never got any closer to happen and as a result, “Chaos” hasn’t fought since his disappointing performance at UFC 296.

Buckley said that due to the name and ranking that Covington still holds at 170-pounds, this is a fight that would interest him if the Usman match-up doesn’t happen. Thomas initially asked “New Mansa” whether in his opinion, Covington is “washed” at 26-years old considering his lack of activity.

“That’s a question for him to answer to but my thing is, the last fight that he had was against Leon Edwards and that was about a year ago now, so time ain’t on nobody’s side. If you really want to show the world what you up to and what you’ve been doing and how you been working, you got to take a fight. I’m happy to find out myself too with Colby Covington if he ain’t got nothing lined up.”

The heated rivalry between Ian Machado Garry and Colby Covington is far from over.

Over the last several months, Garry and the three-time UFC title challenger have taken verbal jabs at one another. The Future’ hoped to settle things inside the Octagon over the summer, but their fight never came to fruition. Instead, Garry went on to earn a closely-contested victory over Michael ‘Venom’ Page.

Ian Machado Garry

Despite being unable to lure Covington into a fight, Garry dedicated much of his post-fight speech to the staunch Trump supporter and recently, he took another dig at ‘Chaos’ with the help of his son.

In a video posted on social media, Garry asked his son to do an impression of Covington. The result was nothing short of hilarious.

“From the kid that brought you the greatest fighter impressions comes a brand new one. The Colby Covington [LAUGHS],” Garry wrote on Instagram.

As of this writing, Covington has not responded to Garry. Probably too busy taking in college football games with the ex-POTUS.

Ian Machado Garry moves to 8-0 in the UFC while Covington sits on the sidelines

Chaos’ has not competed since coming up short against then-welterweight champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in December. Since then, Garry has scored wins over Geoff Neal and ‘MVP’ moving him to 8-0 inside the Octagon. The Irishman now occupies the No. 7 spot in the 170-pound rankings and could be in line for a top-five opponent in his next outing.

Ian Machado Garry

Inexplicably, Covington is still sitting in the division’s top five making him a logical opponent for Garry. The only question is, will ‘Chaos’ actually sign on the dotted line, or will the Oregon State alumnus hold out for another undeserved title shot?

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington was in former U.S. President Donald Trump’s entourage for the Georgia vs. Alabama football game this weekend.

Covington was a guest of Trump’s at the Georgia vs. Alabama rivalry game on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. It was an instant classic from start to finish, but the home team walked away with the win as Alabama defeated Georgia 41-34.

Covington hasn’t fought in the UFC Octagon since a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296. He’s 0-3 in lineal UFC title bouts, including two losses to Kamaru Usman.

Colby Covington

Covington is a loyal supporter of Trump, stemming from the polarizing figure’s 2016 U.S. Presidential Election run. He visited The White House on multiple occasions during Trump’s term in office.

Trump sat cageside at Covington’s last fight at UFC 296. He’s an avid UFC fan, seen at UFC 299 and UFC 302 earlier this year.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington will stop at nothing to improve his skills, even at the expense of his friends.

Covington hasn’t fought in the UFC Octagon since a unanimous decision defeat to Leon Edwards at UFC 296 last year. As of this writing, he hasn’t competed in 2024, and nothing is formally in the works for his return.

Covington remains active in the gym despite his long hiatus from competition. An injury he suffered against Edwards hampered his return timeline to the Octagon.

While hanging out with rapper Lil Pump, Covington entered an impromptu grappling match. As expected, it didn’t go the novice’s way.

Covington and Lil Pump are strong supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump sat cageside to watch Covington at UFC 296, but the fight didn’t go Covington’s way.

Covington was linked to numerous potential matchups in 2024, including a clash against former American Top Team teammate Dustin Poirier. He was in the mix to face Ian Machado Garry at UFC 303 before negotiations fell through the cracks.

Covington has earned wins over the likes of Rafael dos Anjos, Jorge Masivdal, and Tyron Woodley during his UFC tenure. Despite three title losses, he remains transfixed on big-money fights.

In the meantime, Covington is making the most of his time outside of the cage to recharge and recover. Meanwhile, Lil Pump likely won’t grapple again with him anytime soon.
