Calls to Rape Helpline Soar After Conor McGregor's Civil Case Verdict

Calls to a rape crisis center in Ireland nearly doubled following the conclusion of Conor McGregor’s civil suit.

Last week, a jury at the High Court in Dublin found that McGregor had sexually assaulted Nikita Hand during a December 2018 encounter at a hotel. The UFC megastar was ordered to pay Hand more than $250,000 in damages, but his financial woes won’t stop there.

Recently, Proximo Spirits — the company that bought McGregor’s Proper No. 12 brand of whiskey — cut ties with the MMA fighter. McGregor received more than $150 million for his share in the company in 2021 but stayed on as a spokesman. Retail giant Tesco also said a whiskey product promoted by McGregor would be removed from its UK outlets as well as in Ireland.

“This action reflects our commitment to maintaining a retail environment that resonates with the values of our customers and partners,” a spokeswoman said.

Other outlets, including the Supervalu chain, Costcutter stores, and Carry Out retail outlets will no longer sell products linked to McGregor.

Adding to the impact of the High Court’s decision was a surge in calls received by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. According to Rachel Morrogh, chief executive of the crisis center, the number of first-time callers increased by 50% over the weekend.

“In the six hours immediately after the verdict was delivered on Friday afternoon the calls surged by 150%,” Morrogh told the BBC. “I think the trial has resulted in the scales falling off some people’s eyes as to what the victim experience is in an adversarial legal situation.

“It has also thrown up some societal questions around the blame and shame placed on the victim when it really needs to be solely at the door of the perpetrator.”

Speaking to BBC Radio, Morrogh revealed that, “In Ireland, one in two people who have experienced sexual violence will never tell another person.”

Hundreds March in Dublin following Conor McGregor Civil Trial

On Monday, hundreds of people marched in the streets of Dublin in “utter solidarity” with Hand. The protest march was organized by the socialist feminist movement group Rosa to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Participants chanted “Stand with Nikita” and “No more fear, no more shaming — we reject your victim blaming” as they carried signs throughout the capital.

Conor McGregor has maintained he is innocent and revealed plans to appeal the High Court’s decision shortly after the verdict was revealed.

Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao

Conor McGregor is always looking for a way to extend his rivalry with legendary pugilist Manny Pacquaio.

‘PacMan’ surprised fight fights on New Year’s Eve, revealing that a rematch with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather was in the works for 2024. Pacquiao dropped the bombshell while making an appearance at RIZIN 45 inside the iconic Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The bout has not been officially announced, but if true, it will come nearly a decade removed from their ‘Fight of the Century’ scrap in 2015.

“I will see you here in Japan again, for a big fight,” the former eight-division world champion said before turning around and seemingly asking for permission to announce his opponent “Floyd Mayweather, I thought you wouldn’t want me to say that. I am excited for that. Thank you for always supporting RIZIN promotions” (h/t DailyMail).

Conor McGregor shared the clip on Instagram whilst taking a dig at Pacquiao, writing: “A lesson in how not to make an announcement.

Conor McGregor makes his own blockbuster announcement

Of course, the Irishman offered his own big New Year’s reveal, confirming that he would make his long-awaited return to the Octagon on June 28 to headline UFC 302 as part of the promotion’s annual International Fight Week in Las Vegas. McGregor is expected to square off with former Bellator MMA champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler in a 185-pound showdown.

Weeks before the announcement, McGregor vented his frustration over his lengthy layoff, suggesting that if the UFC didn’t lock down a date for his “greatest comeback in combat sports history,” he would pursue a fight with Pacquiao in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“Get me back in there,” he told talkSPORT. “The Mac has lots to offer and loads to deliver. They are talking Manny here in Saudi. The lads in the UFC aren’t really talking any. So, the lads here are talking Manny, the UFC aren’t talking any. Give me something. I’m supposed to be back in April. It was supposed to be December!

“Tell Manny to grow a set of balls and fight me at a higher weight class. Why not? It’s his sport. If he wants me to come down to a smaller weight, I should be able to use more of my weapons. I should be able to kick. I should be able to grapple. Shouldn’t that be fair? Say it to him. Is he a man or a mouse? Is Manny a man or a mouse?”

After his big win at UFC Denver on Saturday night (Nov. 10, 2018), Donald Cerrone said the UFC had already offered him a name. Now, “Cowboy” is hinting he is waiting on Conor McGregor.

Cerrone was visibly emotional when he defeated Mike Perry at UFC Denver last weekend. The 35-year-old “Cowboy” seems to be a refocused and re-dedicated fighter. During his UFC Denver post-fight scrum Cerrone said that the UFC had already offered him up a name. Despite pleas from the media Cerrone would not share the name of his next potential opponent.

Cerrone, however, is dropping some hints as to who his next fight may be. Earlier today “Cowboy” shared on Instagram what looked to be a potential money fight with McGregor:

“Cowboy” has stated multiple times that he would be dropping back down to 155 pounds. McGregor fights in that weight class.

Let us know what you think. Is the UFC really considering booking Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone? Or is “Cowboy” just doing his part to hype fights?

Derrick Lewis Explains Why He Was “Happy” To See UFC 229 Brawl

Derrick Lewis was happy to see that there was a brawl after the UFC 229 headliner.

Derrick Lewis explains why he was happy to see that there was a massive brawl that was started by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. Obviously, this led to chaos breaking out that involved the UFC champ, Conor McGregor, and their respective camps. “The Black Beast” has a good reason for his take on this.

Big Win

As seen in the co-main event of Saturday’s (October 6, 2018) UFC 229 pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lewis knocked out Alexander Volkov with 11 seconds left in the fight. This was a big fight for Lewis as he was facing someone who many considered to be next in line for a title shot.

In order for this fight to happen, he needed to be healthy enough to accept the fight. Once Lewis gets over the hurdles of that, he had a great chance to cement himself as a top contender in the division and did just that. Lewis has won nine of his last ten fights and before this fight, he scored victories over Marcin Tybura and then Francis Ngannou at the UFC 226 event.

Lewis Explains Why

‘The Black Beast’ made his interesting take when it comes to the brawl after the UFC 229 headliner. The reason that he enjoyed the post-fight brawl was due to it likely increased his chance of getting a post-fight bonus for his knockout of Volkov.

“I thought it was entertaining,” Lewis said on the FS2 post-fight show (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “I was happy to see it.”

Keeps On Winning

Lewis later found out that he did get the Performance of the Night bonus worth $50,000, which meant that his good feeling was right.

“I thought [Nurmagomedov and McGregor] were gonna get the bonus, so I’m sure Dana White is gonna take the bonus from Khabib for that,” Lewis said. “Hopefully they give it to me.”

As a result of this win, Lewis moved his winning streak to three in a row. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Daniel Cormier Doesn’t Believe Conor McGregor Deserved UFC 229 Attack

Daniel Cormier doesn’t believe that former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor deserved to be attacked following the UFC 229.

However, that doesn’t mean that the blame is all on the shoulders of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who made his first successful title defense as UFC lightweight champion. He did just that in the main event of Saturday’s UFC 229 pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It Was Personal

The UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion went on record by tweeting after this event that Nurmagomedov’s win over McGregor was “really personal” for the Russian champ. Thus, he had a lot of emotions heading into this fight.

Backstory

It should be noted that Cormier is a Nurmagomedov teammate at American Kickboxing Academy and needs to be taken into consideration when reading and understanding the words of DC. According to Cormier, he thinks that several factors played a part in the highly-anticipated lightweight title fight. Thus, the reason why Khabib was so upset after the fight and why things were so heated even afterward.

The Brawl

In case anyone missed it, Nurmagomedov jumped over the cage and attacked McGregor teammate Dillon Danis. This allowed two teammates of Khabib’s getting into the cage where they punched McGregor. This is when all chaos ensued.

Daniel Cormier Doesn’t Believe

“Two wrongs don’t make it right,” Cormier wrote. “Conor didn’t deserve that. No one did. But some things aren’t for fight promotion. Religion, family, country. Throwing stuff in Brooklyn. For Khabib it wasn’t fight promotion, it was really personal. Diff culture man. Sucks.”

Cormier is slated to make his first title defense as UFC heavyweight champion against former champ Brock Lesnar in January of 2019. Although DC has gone on record in the past by stating that he plans to retire in March of next year, he has expressed interest in defending the light heavyweight title again. In fact, now that his arch-rival Jon Jones has been cleared to fight, DC wants to fight Jones for the third time. Time will tell if that fight is booked.

Conor McGregor keeping a close eye on the sport of MMA is something that he has done his entire career and that includes Georges St-Pierre and Tyron Woodley. The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion is not only looking to regain his 155-pound title but also looking at potentially going to another weight class.

The Names

That weight class would be at welterweight, which is ideal considering that there are two names that he could fight and they have made it known that they would accept if offered. Those fighters are current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and former middleweight and welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.

Conor McGregor Keeping

McGregor made it known in an interview given to his own website, The Mac Life that he’s keeping an eye on them as well as the welterweight and lightweight divisions.

It should be noted that GSP has been working on trying to make it to lightweight in the time away from the Octagon since being out since last November. On the flip Side, Woodley is fresh off a title defense over Darren Till last month and is expected to fight Colby Covington when he’s cleared after undergoing surgery.

”I’m already mapping out what’s next in my head,” he said (H/T to MMAMania). “I know Dustin and Nate is competing. I know the 170 pound belt has also just been defended and I know Tyron, the current welterweight champion, is itching for that one. Like they all fookin’ are. I know Georges is in there test cutting to 155. I know everyone’s around looking for it. So I’m here and I’m ready so let’s see what happens. I’ve got my eye on everyone.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
