Coach backs Conor McGregor for win over Michael Chandler: 'He's an absolute sharpshooter'

John Kavanagh has insisted while a grudge match for his trainee, Conor McGregor against Michael Chandler is still on the cards for the Dubliner’s return to action, a potential switcharoo would not cause much concern for the team — who believe the ex-champion is en route to a rather straightforward win.

Conor McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and featherweight gold holder in the UFC, has been sidelined from action for more than three years, most recently fracturing his left tibia and fibula in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against common-foe, Dustin Poirier.

Expected to take on Chandler in a slated welterweight headliner at UFC 303 at the end of June during International Fight Week, a fractured toe ruled the veteran counter striker from a hiatus-snapping comeback to action.

John Kavanagh expects Conor McGregor to finish Michael Chandler

Earlier this week, UFC CEO, Dana White provided a distinct update on the fighting future of Conor McGregor, confirming how he expects the Dubliner to fight early next year, and if the above-mentioned Kavanagh is concerned, a straightforward win over the former two-weight champion is likely instore.

“We don’t get too obsessed with what the other guy is doing,” John Kavanagh told Bloody Elbow. “We try to focus more on what we’re doing. You look at (Michael) Chandler, he has some incredible wins in the UFC. He stopped Dan Hooker, who was on the toughest guys in that division, and Chandlr made pretty short work of him and then his knockout against (Tony) Ferguson, so he’s dangerous everywhere. He’s solid everywhere.”

“We’re ready for his wild strikes and we’re ready for his wild grappling,” Kavanagh explained. “At the end of the day, the fight starts with the two of them standing at opposite ends of the cage, so whatever Chandler’s goal is — whether it’s to land a strike or a takedown — he’s got to walk through that danger zone and that’s where Conor (McGregor) has proven time and again to be an absolute sharpshooter. When he lands, it tends to be all she wrote.”

Dana White reveals MMA Mount Rushmore, includes UFC stars Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey

UFC CEO, Dana White has revealed his quartet of fighters who feature on his Mount Rushmore of mixed martial arts — and while some choices may be surprising — the promotional boss has stuck to combatants who have competed in his organization.

White, the long-time president-turned-CEO of the UFC, was quizzed as to whom would feature on his Mouth Rushmore in a mixed martial arts setting — and chose former two-weight champions, Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor — as well as female trailblazer, Ronda Rousey, and likely nobodies surprise, incumbent heavyweight best Jon Jones, whom he had tirelessly championed recently.

“You’ve got to go with Jon Jones,” Dana White said. You’ve got to go with Ronda Rousey. Women would not be fighting in the UFC if it wasn’t for her.”

You would have to put GSP (Georges St-Pierre) in there and absolutely, positively Conor McGregor,” Dana White explained. “He elevated and changed the game globally.”

Conor McGregor will not fight in 2024 says Dana White

Receiving both props and criticizm aplenty following his choices, White had been accused online of simply picking fighters from the promotion who landed himself and the promotion some of the most lucrative cards in the history of combat sports.

Picking Rousey for her inaugural bantamweight title reign and presence amongst a male-dominant space during her early years in the sport, White then called upon Canadian icon, St-Pierre — who struck gold during two separate eras in the sport — in two separate divisions to boot.

Furthermore, after providing a positive update on the fighting future of McGregor — White picked the charismatic Dubliner who became the first two-division champion who held belts simultaneously back in 2016.

Singing the praise of the polarizing Jones ahead of his expected return at UFC 309 in November, White included the outspoken Rochester native — having very-publicly proclaimed him as the greatest combat sports fighter that’s ever lived, and comprising a gushing video package during the broadcast of the Contender Series last week.

Foot was a Balloon: Conor McGregor’s Toe Injury Adds a Size to His Shoes, But He’s Ready for UFC Comeback

The pinky toe injury that took Conor McGregor out of his comeback fight at UFC 303 forced the Irish megastar to move up a full shoe size.

Fortunately, it sounds like everything is healing nicely as McGregor has been able to return to running and boxing as confirmed by the two-division titleholder himself during a recent interview with SunSport.

“I’m good, very good,” McGregor said. “I’m a [shoe] size up right now. I’m back in running runners. I can run, I can box. “These shoes [are] a little bit tricky to get into. I just went up a size.”

With McGregor’s quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sports history” further delayed, attention immediately turned to when or if his bout with Michael Chandler would be rescheduled. Thus far, we still don’t have an answer, but the Irishman has been pushing hard to headline the promotion’s final pay-per-view of the year in December.

“That sounds good to me,” McGregor said when asked about potentially headlining UFC 310. “That sounds good to me brother.”

Conor McGregor confident he’ll be back in the Octagon soon

McGregor currently has two fights left on his UFC contract leading to rumors that the promotion is holding off on scheduling the Dubliner’s return until after it negotiates a new broadcast deal next year.

However, it sounds like McGregor and the promotion have had some productive talks over the last few weeks and the Irishman is confident that he’ll be back inside the Octagon before long.

“You know, the fight never happened,” McGregor said when pressed on negotiations. “So it’s just about getting the fight on.”

White echoed a similar sentiment after initially claiming that there were no plans to host a McGregor fight anytime soon.

“Conor news coming up, we’ve got [Charles] Oliveira news coming up, we’ve got Chandler news coming up,” White said on Instagram Live. “All that good s**t. Coming soon.”
