Should his long wait to fight Conor McGregor not bear fruit, UFC lightweight Michael Chandler does have another idea in mind…

It’s been almost two years since the former three-time Bellator champion was in action. While the first few months of that period were spent recovering from the damage he sustained in defeat to Dustin Poirier, the majority has followed a trend of patience and commitment when it comes to who Chandler wants to face next.

“Iron” was announced as the comeback opponent for McGregor toward the start of 2023, with the pair first coaching opposite one another on The Ultimate Fighter. But that series has been and gone, as have multiple rumored events for their fight and, most recently, one official date.

And after the Irishman withdrew from the UFC 303 pay-per-view main event this past June on late notice, many have reiterated their belief that Chandler is waiting around for a matchup that simply won’t reach the cage.

During a recent interview with Lucky Block, the #6-ranked lightweight acknowledged that he’s an “optimist” but did admit that readjusting his sights to another opponent is on the cards.

“I am an optimist by default, so I do believe the Conor fight will happen. Right now, we are in a period where things are being talked about. What date? Is it Conor? Is it pivoting to a different fight? Is it making the best decision for me and my family? I love the idea that Conor and I did The Ultimate Fighter, we had a training camp, we signed on the dotted line. But as much as I respect Conor, my legacy is not hinged upon this fight. I am running my own race, and I’m continuing to move forward.

“I am at the point now where we are looking at all of the options and not just fighting Conor. Things move fast, and the phone could ring at any time. I don’t want to make it sound like I’m not focused on fighting Conor, but right now when no contract is signed, I’m excited to fight. I’m training every day, and I’m in the best shape that I have been in a very long time, and I’m ready to go out there, whether it’s Conor or someone else. There’s always going to be life after Conor if this fight never comes to fruition.”

Should delays to the McGregor showdown continue, Chandler has pointed to a “realistic” alternative…

Chandler Eyes Oliveira Rematch Should McGregor Fight Fall Away

During the same interview, Chandler was asked to identify his options should the uncertainty surrounding McGregor’s layoff continue.

After highlighting Max Holloway as the “most exciting” opponent, the ex-Bellator star pivoted to a rematch as a more likely battle, and one that could see him jump straight back into title contention at 155 pounds.

“The most realistic option for me if you look at the landscape and you consider everything is Charles Oliveira. I love the rematch with Charles. I think it’s a great fight to get the fans pumped up. I almost had him finished in the first round, and then I made a glaring mistake in the second round that I would never, ever make again. It was almost a self-fulfilling prophecy that I was working on in camp that turned out to be my demise.

“Me and Charles for the number one contender spot. I beat Charles, knock him out in the first round, then all of a sudden I’m sitting at the number one contender spot, and I get to choose whether I fight Islam, or do I fight Conor next? And why not both?”

Chandler shared the Octagon with Oliveira in just his second UFC fight, riding a successful debut opposite Dan Hooker into an immediate shot at the then-vacant lightweight title in May 2021.

“Iron” was on the ascendancy in round one and appeared seconds away from finding a finish. But after “Do Bronx” survived, he came out in the second frame and caught Chandler with a clean left hook, finding the knockout finish soon after.

The 38-year-old has frequently expressed a desire to get that loss back before his UFC career comes to a close. And should his continued push to welcome McGregor back to action fail, perhaps Chandler will put his focus back on UFC gold and redemption against Oliveira.

Conor McGregor shares new training footage ahead of UFC return

Maintaining he would still make good on a return in order to share the Octagon with Missouri veteran, Chandler – McGregor showed off some newly released training footage ahead of his return, wishing his long-time striking coach, Owen Roddy a happy birthday.

Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh says it’s sad that people are trying to boycott Elon Musk and X.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk bought Twitter and renamed it X in October of 2022. Since then, many fans have been critical of the website and one user suggested everyone should boycott the app.

Kavanagh, the head coach of SBG Ireland and the head coach of Conor McGregor responded to the claims saying it’s sad that people want to block Elon Musk.

“Do a bit of boxing or something lad, even just hit the pads. It’s really sad you think this is some brave act of defiance,” Kavanagh wrote.

Kavanagh wasn’t fond of a random saying people should block Musk and boycott X for no reason.

Dana White Is noncommital on Conor McGregor’s return

UFC CEO Dana White is noncommittal about when Conor McGregor will return to action.

McGregor was booked to fight at UFC 303 on June 29, but the Irishman was forced out of the bout due to a broken pinky toe. Since then, there has been no word on when he will return, and White says he isn’t even thinking about a McGregor fight.

“When Conor is ready to go, he’ll let me know, so I’m not even thinking about it or talking about Conor right now,” White said to TNT Sports (via SI).

McGregor does not have his next fight booked, and he says the toe injury was more painful than his broken leg.

“The injury is a nuisance. It’s painful,” McGregor told Severe MMA. “I’m not going to lie, it’s very, very painful. Probably even more painful than the leg, and that’s the truth. And I’ll tell you why, the leg, at least, was wrapped up. I couldn’t access it. The foot is just there still, it’s like it’s exposed. So it’s a bit painful but it comes with the territory.”

McGregor has not fought since July 2021 when he broke his leg in the trilogy match against Dustin Poirier.

Urijah Faber Backs Conor McGregor to Defeat Michael Chandler: "He hasn’t lost a beat"

Urijah Faber thinks Conor McGregor is far from done inside the Octagon.

More than three years removed from his disastrous trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier, fans are still awaiting the return of McGregor who was originally expected to headline UFC 303 in June. Sadly, it never happened as the Irish megastar broke his pinky toe while training, forcing him out of his clash with Michael Chandler.

Conor McGregor

With rumors now circulating that their bout has been pushed back to December, pundits are beginning to once again question whether or not McGregor will ever actually fight again. Attempting to quell some of the concern, four-time UFC title challenger Urijah Faber stressed that fighting is in the Irishman’s DNA.

“For being a friend but a distant friend, someone that I feel like I’ve spent enough time on with to kind of understand, the guy wants to fight,” Faber told MMA Fighting. “He has money, he has fame, he could easily go and just do the movie career or be a businessman or whatever, but I feel like in his heart, his identity, his passions are still to fight. I think he will fight.”

While Faber’s teammate Chad Mendes, who once fought McGregor for the UFC interim featherweight title at UFC 189, has his doubts that ‘Mystic Mac’ is ever coming back, ‘The California Kid’ tends to disagree.

“He’s in no rush, he’s going to do it on his terms, which is a great place to be,” Faber said of the constant delays. “Not many people in this world, in our world, mixed martial arts, get to be in the place he’s in, where he wears the pants. But I think he will fight because he loves to fight.

I mean, that’s who he is in his heart, that’s what’s given him these opportunities. He’s still young and full of piss and vinegar, so I hope to see him fight. The MMA space always benefits when a superstar comes out and puts their neck out.”

McGregor kickstarted his iconic UFC run in 2013, winning 10 of his first 12 bouts, including a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo to claim the featherweight title and a second-round finish of Eddie Alvarez to take home the lightweight crown.

Urijah Faber Likes what he’s seeing out of conor McGregor in the gym

In more recent years, McGregor has struggled to find the win column with his only victory since 2016 being a 40-second shellacking of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in January 2020.

He has since lost back-to-back bouts against Dustin Poirier, but Faber believes he’s seen enough to know that when McGregor returns, he’ll be the same fighter we all marveled at during the 2010s.

“If he trains correctly, I think he’ll win,” Faber said. “We actually sent him a Rollbot. If you haven’t seen it, rollbotbjj.com, it’s a company that I have. I was impressed. The Rollbot is a high-tech training dummy with neck sensors and joints that dislocate. He wanted one bad, so we sent him one out, and I was watching him on that thing — and I’m like, ‘This guy is as skilled as it gets when he goes to the ground.’ He hasn’t lost a beat, so I’d like to see him back.”

Javier Mendez: UFC can't dictate Conor McGregor's fights, but Islam Makhachev makes sense

Hoping to secure his student, Islam Makhachev a high-profile showdown with arch-rival, Conor McGregor, head coach, Javier Mendez insists that while the UFC can’t dictate – he would like to see the Russian land a huge fight with the polarizing star next.

Makhachev, the current undisputed lightweight champion, and pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter in the promotion, has been sidelined since he racked up his third consecutive successful title fight defense at UFC 302 back in May.

Submitting common-foe, Dustin Poirier with a fifth round D’Arce choke win, Islam Makhachev was expected to take on Arman Tsarukyan in a title fight rematch at UFC 308 at the end of October, however, has been ruled out until potentially next year as he deals with an unspecified arm injury setback.

In his place comes an undisputed featherweight title fight in Abu Dhabi, as the undefeated, Ilia Topuria takes on former titleholder, Max Holloway – fresh from his stunning symbolic BMF title fight win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.

Islam Makhachev backed to fight Conor McGregor in the future

And while Makhachev is still expected to take on Armenian contender, Tsarukyan in a rematch next, the former’s head coach thinks a fight with McGregor should firmly be on the table for him.

“That’s a possibility with Islam (Makhachev) and Conor (McGregor), but let’s face it, Conor dictates who he fights, I mean, anybody that thinks otherwise, the UFC doesn’t dictates who Conor fights,” Javier Mendez told Red Corner MMA. “Conor dictates who he fights. UFC may offer but if Conor says no it’s no.”

“Let’s be fair with each other, I don’t like him but he’s the biggest draw in the business, the records show it and I would love to watch him get beat so yeah, I’m going to pay if he fights Islam, for sure I’ll be in the corner,” Mendez continued.

Canelo Alvarez Hits Back at Conor McGregor’s Taunts with Cold Response: "He’s my son"

Boxing icon Canelo Alvarez recently responded to Conor McGregor’s claim that he’s no longer a draw.

On September 14, Alvarez will return to the squared circle for a clash with Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas, the same night as UFC 306 when the promotion makes its big debut at Sphere.

Canelo Alvarez

Ahead of his showdown with Berlanga, Alvarez shared some insight into why his long-rumored fight with undefeated sensation David Benavidez still hasn’t come to fruition. Alvarez clarified that he’d only sign on the dotted line if it guaranteed him a $200 million payday — a demand McGregor found quite humorous.

“Canelo is a cornflake,” McGregor said in a since-deleted post on X. “He has about 300k buys in him. He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid. UFC NOCHE is going to run them from the strip. Sheik Turki was right moving on. CANELO DOESN’T SELL.”

‘Canelito’ responded to McGregor’s comments following the recent Alvarez vs. Berlanga pre-fight press conference.

“What’s happening is that he’s helping Dana White to sell for the UFC,” Alvarez told Abraham Gonzales. “That’s why he’s saying that, but he knows he’s my son.”

Canelo Alvarez has fought six times since conor McGregor’s last Octagon Appearance

Since coming up short against Dmitry Bivol in 2022, Canelo Alvarez has won four straight, including wins over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, and Jaime Munguía. Overall, Alvarez is 61-2 with 39 of his wins coming by way of knockout. His last finish came against Caleb Plant nearly four years ago.

Meanwhile, Conor McGregor has continued to work towards his Octagon return following a devastating leg break against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Originally, ‘Mystic Mac’ was scheduled to headline UFC 303 in June, but a broken pinky toe took him out of his main event matchup with Michael Chandler.

Rumors suggest that their scrap will be rebooked for UFC 310 in December, but no official announcement has been made.
