Matt Brown doubles down on his claim that Conor McGregor is 'not ever coming back' to the UFC

Matt Brown was never fully convinced that we’d see Conor McGregor fight at UFC 303.

After nearly three years on the shelf, ‘Mystic Mac’ was primed for a long-awaited clash with former Bellator champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler on June 29. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case after McGregor withdrew from the contest due to an undisclosed injury.

With uncertainty surrounding the nature of McGregor’s injury, Brown is feeling even more confident in his original belief that the Irishman would never again compete inside the Octagon.

“I was never confident before that he would [come back],” Brown said during an appearance on The Fighter vs. The Writer. “It didn’t shock me when I saw he was out of this fight. No, I’m still on that same train — he’s not ever coming back.

“I say the same thing I said before, I hope he proves me wrong. I hope I’m wrong. I would like to see Conor fight again. I would like to see him do a real training camp with real training partners, push himself hard, go back to the great Conor that he was before. I would love to see that. I think a lot of people would love to see that. It’s not happening” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Brown would love to see Conor McGregor prove him wrong, but ‘The Immortal’ feels like McGregor would be better served by making the move to boxing. Not only would he take less damage, but he’d likely bank a far bigger payday for his efforts.

“Notice I said ‘maybe he will prove me wrong,’ and I remember when you broke that news, the first thing I said is, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it,’” Brown said. “I said maybe he’ll prove me wrong, and that’s a maybe. I would still say the same thing. It just doesn’t make sense for him to fight again. If he’s going to fight again, it should be boxing. He doesn’t have to worry as much about the shin. I think most likely what’s going on here is the shin isn’t taking, the titanium or whatever kind of plate they put in there, isn’t taking and he’s having a hard time with it.

“It’s been three years. You shouldn’t have to recover from any injury for three years. I’m not convinced still that he’ll ever fight again with the UFC. Maybe he’ll do something else. If he does, I think it should be boxing. He’s not a bad boxer. He’s not going to compete with Floyd Mayweather ever, but he’s a decent boxer. He’s got some good matches out there, I think.”

Matt Brown can’t see why Millionaire Conor McGregor would choose to put his body on the line anymore

Aside from the devastating leg injury and father time, Brown believes money is the biggest obstacle for the Irishman.

UFC CEO Dana White has echoed a similar sentiment, noting that when you’ve got a fighter with millions in the bank and a slew of lucrative ventures outside of fighting, there’s little incentive for them to put their bodies on the line

“I’ve said it many times — why would he come back?” Brown stated. “He built a large majority of his net worth outside of the UFC. He’s already built his brand in the UFC. He doesn’t have anything to prove coming back to the UFC. Of course, it makes for a great story and his brand magnifies even more if he comes back and wins another championship. I don’t see that happening, you don’t see that happening, no one really sees that happening.

“Of course, if Conor really wants it and really secludes himself in a tough training camp and brings in some tough guys, I don’t put it past him. But how motivated are you going to be do that when you’ve got $500 million in the bank?”

Instead of seeing Conor McGregor’s quote-unquote “greatest comeback in combat sports history,” fans will be treated to a light heavyweight championship rematch as both reigning titleholder Alex Pereira and No. 1 ranked contender Jiri Prochazka step in on 16 days’ notice to run back their UFC 295 scrap.

Michael Chandler takes Not-So-Subtle dig at Conor McGregor, plans to attend UFC 303: 'Your word is your bond'

Michael Chandler plans to follow through on his commitment.

After waiting patiently for over a year, the former Bellator champion was days away from finally stepping inside the Octagon with Conor McGregor when he got the unfortunate news that the Irish megastar was officially out of their UFC 303 headliner due to an undisclosed injury.

Michael Chandler on McGregor withdrawal

Despite no longer being booked, ‘Iron’ still plans on staying true to his word by showing up at T-Mobile Arena on June 29.

“Six days ago, it was McGregor vs. Chandler. It’s my card,” Chandler said on Instagram. “It was my card when I signed the bout agreement. I signed my name on a piece of paper that said I would be at UFC 303. I made a promise, I made a commitment, and that commitment still stands because your word is your bond and without your word, you are no good.

“If you cannot be relied upon… If people don’t believe that you’re going to follow through with what you say you’re going to do… The definition of integrity is doing what you say you’re going to do without fail. So yes, I will be at UFC 303. No, I will not be fighting at UFC 303, but I am going to see through my commitment.”

If it weren’t obvious, Chandler’s comments were a not-so-subtle dig at McGregor who exited what was to be his first fight since suffering a devastating leg break against Dustin Poirier nearly three years ago.

The first time they met in November 2023, ‘Poatan’ captured the vacant strap with a second-round knockout of ‘BJP’ in MSG. He’ll look to go two-up against the ex-champ as the UFC has once again called upon Pereira to save their fledgling fight card.

A woman who is suing Conor McGregor was attacked in her home by masked burglars, according to The Irish Mail.

According to the report, the woman was in her house with her partner and child when three men wearing balaclavas broke into their house in the early hours of Friday. At approximately 2:20 a.m. Friday morning, the men went upstairs when they were met by the woman’s partner.

They shouted ‘Where’s the money?’ before the man was punched in the face. The man was able to fight back but ended up receiving a stab wound to his stomach in the process.

A source said, “The poor woman is distraught. She hurt herself knocking on the windows and shouting for help. The gardaí have taken over the house and told her not to go back there.”

Following the incident, a Garda spokeswoman issued a statement on the alleged attack.

The report says there is no indication the attack is related to the woman suing Conor McGregor. The woman has sued McGregor over personal damage claims, but the Irishman has denied all the allegations against him.

Conor McGregor issues statement after pulling out of UFC 303 fight

Conor McGregor was booked to make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon at UFC 303 on June 29 against Michael Chandler.

However, just two weeks out from the fight, it was confirmed that the bout was off due to an injury from McGregor. After the news went public, McGregor issued a statement.

Conor McGregor

“Very tough to be ruled out of my scheduled return bout. I picked up an injury prior to the press conference that required more time to heal than was available to me. The decision to postpone the fight was not made lightly, but one made in consultation with my doctors, the UFC, and my team. My fans and opponent deserve me at my best for this fight and we will get there! Thank you for the messages of support, I am in good spirits and confident I’ll be back!,” McGregor wrote.

Conor McGregor hasn’t fought since July of 2021 when he broke his leg in the trilogy match against Dustin Poirier.

Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor is in rehab for substance abuse issues UFC 303 fight exit

Off the back of his return to combat sports over the course of the weekend, UFC alum, Chael Sonnen has claimed former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor is not really injured amid his absence from UFC 303 this month – alleging the Dubliner is currently seeking treatment at a rehabilitation facility for “substance abuse issues”.

McGregor, a former undisptued lightweight champion and featherweight gold holder, was scheduled to headline UFC 303 later this month against former title challenger, Michael Chandler.

However, last week, UFC CEO, Dana White confirmed McGregor was out of his return fight against Missouri veteran, Chandler – confirming he had suffered an injury which would likely sideline him for a period of two months according to subsequent reports.

Chael Sonnen offers theory on Conor McGregor’s UFC 303 exit

And despite McGregor posting a statement on his official social media confirming he had been sidelined through injury, Sonnen – who fought in an exhibition trilogy fight with Anderson Silva last weekend in Brazil, speculated he was undergoing treatment for substance abuse issues.

“Daniel (Cormier), you know what, I’m glad that we’re done talking about this,” Chael Sonnen said during an episode of Good Guy / Bad Guy. “But I wanna mention something else to you on a completely separate topic. What incredible irony that both sides (Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler) have these massive interests in alcohol, and one side is in the middle of rehab for substance abuse – including alcohol.”

“Did it get hot in here?” Chael Sonnen joked. “Oh, it just got hot in here – the big guy came out and said it. He wasn’t supposed to talk about that. Well, that’s why people tune in… two guys are pushing alcohol, totally unrelated story. And then another guy is in rehab for alcohol and other substances – I’m just saying, that’s a tough story to tell. Not for nothing, that gets to be a little bit tough. Have this proper drink, I’ll see you in a proper while, ‘cause I’m in a proper facility right now, watching me not have drinks.
